PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA
Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.
What will this winter be like in NOVA?
Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!
We'll get dug out fast though, right?
AHAHAHAHAH.
Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.
Okay, so we'll die
I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.
What to check on / get
You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:
- Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
- Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
- Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
- Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
- Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
- Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
- Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
- If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
- Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
- If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
- Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.
Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.
Stay. The fuck. Home.
Things you probably don't need
Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:
- A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
- A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
- Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
- Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
- A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.
Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

Question Which commutes to DC suck less and a better QoL for young families: Gainesville/Haymarket/Bristow, Leesburg/Ashburn, or Stafford? Asking as an incoming transplant with young kids...
My family will be relocating to the area for work. We are considering living in VA or MD, but would prefer NOVA. We have young kids, so like most people, we are trying to thread the needle between a manageable daily commute to DC, good schools, low crime, "affordable" housing, and polished amenities.
Ideally, we'd love to find a turnkey house under $650k that is in a master-planned community. I know that's a tall ask, so we're open to a townhouse if it checks off the other boxes. With two little kids and my background in law enforcement, safety and peace of mind are crucial to us. I know there's no one-size-fits-all, but I'd like to hear what you'd recommend I lean into or steer clear of.
I've done my due diligence and know the different school ratings, taxes, and relative housing market in these places... I'm more so looking for your lived experiences and what you think is great or bad (e.g., "the commute on I-95 is WAY worse than I-66 even though mileage looks similar..." or "They just built X down the road from _______, which is awesome/bad for the kids...").
**UPDATE: I'm open to new suggestions, so if my short list of places doesn't accomplish our goals, please let me know where you'd suggest instead. Thanks!*\*

News WTOP: ‘Anti-immigration’ flyers placed on cars in Alexandria neighborhood; Community worries it may discourage voting
wtop.comIn a statement, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the agency “was not involved in the distribution of these flyers.”
Olivia Troye, who lives in the same neighborhood, said she woke up Monday morning and realized several blocks of cars had “anti-immigrant flyers.”
“They had covered this street and all of our neighboring streets,” she said.
Troye worked for former Vice President Mike Pence during President Donald Trump’s first term, and announced a plan to run for Congress as a Democrat in a redrawn district under Virginia’s redistricting push.
Anyone with video footage of the person distributing the flyers, Troye said, can contact Sgt. John Jones with Alexandria police at 703-746-6867.

Massive police presence outside of Golds gym ballston
Anyone know why there are 15 cop
cars lined up outside of ballston golds gym? Almost looks like they’re arresting the driver of an Advance Towing truck
Edit: The cops brought out a dog and it looks like they’re trying to pick up a scent, I wonder if they’re still looking for someone

Rant Completely misleading Zillow listing in Alexandria
zillow.comThis Zillow listing of a small lot in Del Ray near a car dealership features renderings of a large house on a sprawling wooded lot, on a hill, with a large swimming pool in the back. I get that the seller has to use renderings to sell a house that isn’t built yet, but don’t lie about the lot.
I love Del Ray, but if you want the house in the renderings, I have terrible news for you.
I’ll add the worst offender rendering and the Google map view of the lot in a comment.

Rant Today @ 267, nothing like paying tolls to still be late to work….
Mini rant: it should be illegal for private construction projects to block whole lanes of traffic during rush hour.
If it's a public service repair or an emergency, I kind of get it, but I'm very over my commute. Doubling because a private contractor needs to block Lanes of traffic, their new apartment building build. These f\*ckers get subsidies to build housing. They should not be allowed to inconvenience the surrounding community every single day for months on end. I'm not saying stop development but for the love of God can we not block traffic during the worst travel times of the day?

Driving/Traffic Shot in the dark - dash cam request for hit-and-run incident on 7 in Vienna/Tysons this morning
Per the title, submitting a shot in the dark request because, regrettably, I now count myself among the ranks of those drivers who learn the hard way the importance of having a dash cam. I'm hopeful that someone smarter than me (who already has a dash cam) may have picked up the interaction and could perhaps help me out with the insurance claim and police report.
On the way into Tysons this morning at around 7:15 am on Rt 7 eastbound, right around the toll road / 267 overpass, I was involved in a hit-and-run, sideswiped by a Red F-150 with American flag lettering on the tailgate and a Don't Tread on Me plate with a Koons licence plate cover. I was driving a green Genesis GV70. After the sideswipe, they took the exit onto eastbound 267 and drove off down the road, almost hitting other vehicles while recklessly merging onto the toll road.
I followed onto 267 to try and get a pic of the license plate, then immediately got off the at the first exit to International/Spring Hill Dr. Didn't want to follow any longer than necessary to take a quick pic. Regrettably, that picture isn't terribly clear, and the plate number I relayed to FCPD did not come back with a hit.
I'm not banking on this working out in my favor or anything; just hopeful that a good samaritan and fellow r/NoVA user may have the missing link that could help wrap this up and tie a bow on this morning's lovely life lesson.
Thanks for your time, get a dash cam, and drive safely out there!

Question AIO - apt water damage in arlington cortland apartment
hey yall - anyone have an experience or tips on how to get things done with property mgmt on repairs with cortland/AIO? i haven’t lived in there long but did report that there was *potential* water damage on the move in maintenance form, and has since gotten a lot worse.
i’m pretty much out of the apartment all day, leaving & returning when it’s dark (i’ll do a pitstop to change for the gym right after work), and keep my bedroom low/no lights. wfh last week, and actually confirmed water damage when i saw my bedroom wall & ceiling bubbling, peeling, and sagging.
reported it on the online portal maintenance + via email to mgmt to not only have it looked at, but inspect for underlying damage/mold issues, trying to raise awareness and to try and prevent any spread in my unit and to my neighbors. responses with them have been terrible (from other experience, not surprising), however thought with a situation like this would be more communicative.
a couple days ago when we had gotten all the rain on sunday into monday, i had gotten home ~5/6 a.m. and was getting ready for bed when i heard trickling from my bedroom. turns out there’s a water leak from the top of the window going straight into my hvac convector. immediately called emergency line, worried now abt potential electrical fire/damage to hvac and they said they’d come by around 8 a.m. 8 comes and goes, i have to leave at 8:30. after i send another email, i get an email ~10 that there’s someone coming to inspect and do drywall repairs and some had come in at 10:30.
since then, no communication, reports, status updates, etc. on top of that - any portal maintenance requests disappear from open status, but don’t go into closed status (which i’ve also told them about).
i understand they need to wait for the drywall to dry before repairing but like… what abt i have a strong feeling they need to inspect for mold bc water damage has been sitting there for months at this point, aren’t addressing the hvac issues i’ve raised, and aren’t really addressing the portal issue that i’ve raised, too.
not trying to be a bitch or annoying w the amt im contacting them bc i can see how they’re busy, there’s probably a lot to manage with a building like that, and it’s not like the leak cause a flood. i’m really just looking for communication on their plan for full remediation, since im increasingly feeling uncomfortable living in that space. i’m super sensitive to mold and while there’s always potential of some type in an older building, am realllyyyy trying to mitigate anything that could spread further, esp beyond my apt.
yes, i understand these events happened w/i a week, so maybe im just jumping the gun and being too persistent? but would have thought given the circumstances and initially asking them confirm water damage when i moved in makes me annoyed :/ but maybe im doing too much since there’s multiple concerns to address.
tldr; potential pre-existing water damage i reported turned into an issue, and haven’t received a response on how they’re fully addressing the issue after numerous emails and maintenance requests (to mgmt that’s unresponsive) except for someone coming into inspect drywall, and repair when it’s dried. any tips on getting through to them?/AIO?
