3D Printed Suppressor
What do i need to do in regard to printing a suppressor for my 22lr rifle legally?
r/VAGuns • u/OrcusGroup • 20d ago
ATF Director Cekada was adamant that a federal firearms licensee (FFL) found to be transferring suppressors on a Form 4473 WILL NOT be cited for violations. Former NFA Chief Albro later echoed this, saying the ATF’s policy is to presume all suppressors transferred via a Form 4473 were legally transferred. This should put some FFLs not transferring currently at ease.
The Director noted that official guidance likely to come in a few weeks will address suppressors, SBR/SBSs, and traveling with NFA items. The DOJ and The White House also have a hand in the guidance.
Other things of interest in the article are some comments about FRTs, changes to 4473s, the recent change for handgun sales for 18-21 year olds, age requirement for machine guns, internet retailers, and more.

As the title states, this is a megathread for the known Virginia FFLs that are participating in the NFA injunction for named plaintiffs (GOA, Silencer Shop, PSA, etc.)
Also, please post the general area the FFL is located as well as any special instructions they may have for obtaining previously restricted items.
Please stay on topic, off topic comments will be subjected to removal.
With love,

Apparently in a move to cut costs Ruger is discontinuing a slew of "legacy" and "low volume" products including the legendary GP100. :(

Va is my home of record. Not state of record as I currently hold an out of state license.
My question is with the new rulings.. how are suppressors marked on a 4473? Its been years since I've done a form 4/4473 for a can.
I retired from the military and currently reside in Va for a few months until I move to NC.
Can I still purchase a can since it's not a pistol or is it an AOW? Which would still make it a no go, correct?
A friend has their FFL but not SOT and with the rulings, I haven't been able to find an answer. Thanks

What would be the easiest way to remove the lower hand guard retainer on my SAM7K, at home?
I don’t plan to put the old hand guard back on after I switch to the new hand guard, so no real reason to keep the retainer intact. And I plan to SBR this, so it will be engraved (pending law changes etc) so I won’t be selling it either.
Remove the FSB/Gas block and slide it out? Do I punch the two pins on the FSB and does the FSB just slides out?
Grab the Dremel metal cutting disks and go at it patiently? I’m sure I’ll make a knick or two on the outside coating on the barrel, but that’s OK for me, since it will be hidden under the new hand guard.

TL:DR at the bottom.
After the recent NFA ruling, I interacted with a few of the auto-suggested news subreddits expressing my positive opinion of the ruling, and to my surprise I woke up this morning with my account permanently banned by Reddit “for prohibited transactions”. It seems some blue-haired dickless basement dweller was none too pleased with my opinions, and for some reason only known to them, and unfortunately God, they tried to get my account banned.
I’ve added the post in question that originally got me banned, and as you can see, all I asked was if anyone knew a website that was selling a reasonably priced PS90. I know it was not the mods of the ps90 subreddit, since there are also multiple older posts from the past months and years basically asking the same question, and the timing of this happening the night of my comments regarding the NFA ruling are no coincidence.
I’ve never hid my posts or comments because I stand behind what I say, and I don’t have anything to hide. Unfortunately after this I’ve had to private all of my gun subreddit activity in case another instance like this comes up. You can pick and choose in your account settings which subreddits you want to hide your activity from, and I would highly suggest you do for all gun related ones.
Fortunately, I was able to appeal the decision, but Reddit makes it relatively hard, as they only give you 240 characters to make your case, so I could not cite older posts asking the same question without the same action taken against them, and could barely fit the text in their TOC’s that allow for the type of post I made. And who knows if I would be successful in appealing the ban if something like that happened again. Of course no recourse will be taken against the person who made this false claim. 🙄
TL:DR- hide all your activity related to gun subreddits, because a blue-haired dickless basement dweller will take offense to your views and try to get you banned.
Hey just wanted to let y'all know that your local Costco might have some of these in stock! 49.99 at the Leesburg Costco

A lot people are spewing bullshit, so I decided to look up the history on this.
Virginia may already allow injunction-protected SBR/SBS possession without a Form 1 — and the legislative history matters
Not legal advice. I’ve been digging through Virginia’s SBR/SBS statutes, the 2026 Silencer Shop/Jensen ruling, and Virginia’s legislative history, and there’s an important point I don’t see many people discussing.
Virginia Code §18.2-300 generally prohibits civilian possession of a state-defined sawed-off rifle or shotgun. But §18.2-303.1 expressly says that nothing in the article prohibits one that is:
“possessed in compliance with federal law.”
Virginia appellate courts have already recognized §18.2-303.1 as containing the actual civilian exceptions to the state prohibition. Dillard v. Commonwealth specifically describes it that way. (FindLaw)
Here’s where the history gets interesting.
Virginia used to have its own state registration requirement for sawed-off shotguns. That requirement was repealed in the 1970s. Virginia later expanded the law to cover rifles and, in 1993, added the present “possessed in compliance with federal law” exception.
In other words, Virginia knew perfectly well how to require state registration if it wanted to. It got rid of that system and later chose to make federal compliance the standard instead.
Virginia did not write:
“must have an approved Form 1”
“must be registered in the NFRTR”
“must have an NFA tax stamp”
or
“must bear additional NFA maker markings.”
It chose the much broader language: “possessed in compliance with federal law.”
Now look at what happened federally.
On August 5, 2026, the federal district court in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF, consolidated with Jensen v. ATF, held the challenged NFA provisions unconstitutional after Congress reduced the relevant NFA making/transfer taxes to $0. The court permanently enjoined ATF/DOJ from enforcing those provisions against the plaintiffs and, where applicable, their current and future members/customers. That includes major Form 1, registration, making and possession provisions. The Jensen plaintiffs received additional relief from §5842(b) and §5861(i). (GovInfo)
So for someone genuinely covered by that injunction, the ordinary Form 1/registration provisions are not merely being ignored by ATF — the federal government is under a court order prohibiting it from enforcing them against that person.
Then on October 9, ATF went further and announced nationwide non-enforcement for SBRs, SBSs, silencers and AOWs. ATF specifically says it will no longer enforce:
prior approval before making;
NFA registration;
The associated unregistered-firearm prohibitions;
Interstate transportation of unregistered covered NFA firearms under §5861(j); and
“the NFA requirement to mark all NFA firearms.” (ATF)
That last point matters for people wondering about the traditional extra NFA maker engraving.
The October 9 policy does not repeal §5842(a). It is an enforcement policy. But Virginia does not independently require that engraving. Virginia asks whether the firearm is possessed in compliance with federal law.
And Virginia’s history makes a narrow reading of that phrase harder to justify. The Commonwealth once maintained its own SBR/SBS registration system, intentionally eliminated it, and later chose federal compliance as the test for civilian possession.
So consider the narrow hypothetical:
A Virginia resident is otherwise lawful to possess firearms, is unquestionably protected by the federal injunction, has an existing commercially manufactured firearm with its original serial number intact, and possesses it in an SBR/SBS configuration without a Form 1, NFRTR registration, or additional NFA maker engraving.
There is a very strong argument that §18.2-303.1 protects that possession.
Why?
Because Virginia chose to say:
“possessed in compliance with federal law”
Instead of:
“possessed only if registered under the NFA.”
Those are not the same sentence.
Could a Virginia prosecutor argue that federal statutes remaining technically “on the books” still defeat the exception? Sure. But they would have to explain why a Virginia court should read Form 1, NFRTR and engraving requirements into a criminal statute when the General Assembly didn't put those words there — particularly where the federal government is either judicially prohibited from enforcing the relevant provisions against the defendant or has expressly ceased enforcing them.
And if the criminal statute genuinely supports competing reasonable interpretations, Virginia’s rule of lenity becomes relevant as well.
The biggest caveat is that no published Virginia appellate decision has yet applied §18.2-303.1 to this exact post-2026 federal situation. So nobody should confuse “very strong statutory argument” with “Virginia Supreme Court already decided this.”
But the historical record matters:
Virginia once required its own registration.
Virginia repealed it.
Virginia subsequently chose federal compliance as the civilian exception.
Virginia never recreated its own Form 1/NFRTR/engraving requirements.

I read that the VA State Police are carrying a .357 SIG P320 and are the last state that is holding out on a non-9mm round at this point. Does anyone know what round they are issued? And if they plan on switching to 9mm in the near future?

So at weird moments I’ll find time to sort thru a box or section of stuff that was left to me by my Dad. Not much and the sentimental items have been moved aside and part of their new life.
Dad was a Marine. Shortly before his passing he bought a carbine from a dealer in Florida (I worked hard to get that bill of sale and info on that purchase) but I also have a bunch of ammo/accessories.
My understanding is I can sell the ammo legally privately? But also, how? This isn’t my wheelhouse and honestly, wouldn’t mind the stuff gone with relative ease on my part.
(Chesterfield)
Suggestions???
Two full 50-round boxes of Armscor .30 Carbine, 110-grain FMJ.
Two full 50-round boxes of PPU .30 Carbine, 110-grain soft point.
One full 50-round box of Aguila .30 Carbine, 110-grain FMJ.
One full 50-round bag of Georgia Arms .30 Carbine, 110-grain FMJ.
Two full 50-round Lake City boxes labeled “Ball Carbine, Caliber .30 M1.”
One wrapped bundle of Dominican Republic .30 Carbine ammunition.
Two loaded six-pocket .30 Carbine bandoliers with cardboard inserts.
Four straight carbine magazines.
Two curved carbine magazines.
Two canvas magazine pouches, one marked “HAMEL CO 1944.”
One cleaning kit with pouch, rods, brushes, and assorted tools.
Additional sling/webbing.

In light of recent news, there were a few questions I had about privately made suppressors relating to the recent law on privately made firearms.
Being that suppressors are considered firearms under the GCA, how does this effect that?

So with the ATF's new policy changes to SBR's and SBS', would we still need a Form 4 or can we just throw a 14.5" upper and be good to go?
If I have read our current laws correctly, it just states that we need to follow NFA requirements, IE Form 4 registration, but now that there are no Form 4 requirements for SBR's does that mean VA doesn't require us to register them with the NFA?
You would still be in compliance which is what VA law states we need to do. At least until Richmond writes another restrictive law.

Has anyone had a Form 4 approved for a factory SBR/SBS that was purchased after the AWB injunction went into effect on July 21st?

Walking out with a suppressor with the 4473 in an hour feels weird.

I'm new to the suppressor game and to be quite honest, it feels a bit overwhelming searching online for how to choose one and how to mount it. I really just need someone knowledgeable to break it down Barney style for me.
Here's my situation: I run 5.56, 7.62x39, and 6.5 CR and 6.5 Grendel.
I know that it's better to have one dedicated suppressor for just the 5.56 and then a .30 cal can for the 7.62 (AK's). Would that .30 cal can also work on the 6.5's? Or does each 6.5 need it's own dedicated suppressor as well?
For 5.56, I would like to be able to swap between rifles. I'd be using the 5.56 across a few different platforms- AR's, Tavor, and an AK (WBP Jack). I believe that a QD mount would be ideal here, but how does that work? Are the QD mounts proprietary to the suppressor brand?
I'm also assuming the QD mounts are not a one size fits all barrel, either, so how do I go about finding the right mount? Just make sure it matches the threads? I'm not afraid of taking the time and elbow grease to unscrew a direct thread if it makes things less complicated since there's multiple platforms involved. And worst case, I don't *have* to find one that could work across all of them, and just leave it on the AR since that's the one I primarily use.
Thanks for any help!

I'll be moving to NoVA from a non-free state soon. I've read a few other threads about this same topic from a few months ago, but am confused with all the new law changes, injunction, and future cases on the court's dockets.
I'm thinking of bringing my AR, competition pistol, and ccw. I am planning on getting a VA ID asap so I can start the 30 day waiting period and a VA CCP.
Is there anything that I should prepare for or be aware of?

Question regarding the recent ATF guidance. I know we're still screwed when it comes to SBR/SBS creation and purchases, but what about already owned suppressors? I've been looking to sell one I don't want or need that was a Form 4 transfer earlier this year. What steps can I now take to sell it to someone here in the Commonwealth? Would I still need to do any eForm paperwork or would this be treated like a normal firearm that I can just do a private sale with?
