Travel Driving in nz
Brit here on a working holiday.
Two things that actually shock me about driving here:
- People driving on their phones (it’s genuinely scary how many people will be on their phones whilst driving, I don’t understand it and I see alot of signs stating not to use your phones but I’ve even seen police on their phones, question is: is this law not really enforced?) coming from the uk it’s so strict there with phones that we even have cameras installed throughout the country that catches people on their phones.
Pick up trucks: I’ve spoke with alot of WHV workers from all different countries and we have all said the same thing. Pick up trucks speeding down the back roads/ country roads tail gating. Even when you’re doing the speed limit already (it is always the large pick up trucks) are they the BMW drivers of New Zealand
(EDIT: people are referring these to utes or rangers)
Anyways your country is extremely beautiful. Please don’t take this post as an attack, just a girl scared of getting into a car accident here xx

Politics PSA: Campaign staff from the various parties will be actively posting in this subreddit under the guise of regular people.
We all know this happens everywhere nowadays, don't think it isn't happening here.
There will be active campaigns by some, maybe all parties, commenting, and posting, and up and down voting content they want you to see.
They will have multiple accounts, they will act like they were "going to vote for Party A, but after the news of what A has done/said, they're going to vote for Party B instead."
They will make anything Party A does as an unforgivable mistake, and anything Party B does as a nothing burger.
They will act like they are a swing voter who considers all the facts and policies and this year, and after careful consideration Party B looks the most sensible and promising choice.
And they are going to write it like they are real people, with real concerns. Shit, it might just be bots. If our online political campaigns haven't devolved into bots spamming social media yet, they're at least a decade behind the norm.
Be aware, you are probably not arguing or listening to someone or something who is commenting back in good faith.

Politics Oriini Kaipara on Visiting Mongrel Mob - Facebook Post
From her candidate page, Oriini Kaipara mō Tāmaki Makaurau, 14.10.26:
I expected a negative reaction to my post about visiting the Mongrel Mob.
Scaremongering is common during an Election. It’s part of the fabric of paru politics.
But a Stuff reporter emailed me after he published his story online, inferring that I have broken the law. So, I’m compelled to respond.
With respect, @GlennMcConnell, I have not broken any law. My job now is to read the law, every day. I’ve extracted from the Police website and provide a link to the Gangs Act 2024 so there is no further confusion, for anyone - including the Justice Minister, who already knows no law or rules have been broken.
I know the post would be unpalatable to some, questionable to others, and simply hard to reconcile for the likes of the Minister.
But I didn’t post for you. Or them. Or anyone. I posted to acknowledge the Whero Whānau who hosted all of us including the few service providers who care to look beyond the patch to know the person - with respect and treated us with dignity and manaaki.
Reach out to Harry Tam. A bright man who knows a great deal about the history of gangs and the parallels between gangs and politicians. Minister Goldsmith knows him. In fact, many senior politicians know Harry Tam. He’s been a public policy consultant for a government agency for years.
Pāpā Pita and Whaea Tari used to consult him and many others across the divide, on gangs, for the policies and mahi they lead to ensure necessary supports were in place for everyone involved, including victims of crime.
As MP for Tāmaki Makaurau I take my role seriously. I care deeply about whānau and especially the way we treat each other. I take violence seriously. I take crime seriously too.
This government has committed so many crimes against the most vulnerable of Aotearoa. Not gangs but mums and dads, grandparents, disabled, rangatahi, takatāpui, and even our taiao.
Mokopuna decisions require me and my peers to back all our whānau, ensuring no one is left behind. That’s what I’ll keep doing - just like my tipuna, Wairaka.
🖤❤️💚

Shitpost New Zealand job situation is cooked but Rocketlab is hiring
Anyone have friends who work for Rocketlab that have recently disappeared?
Maybe the reason they need new engineers is that they keep testing the Rutherford engines with their faces?
I’m no rocket scientist, but I feel there’s a better way.

Politics Is anyone else sitting right in the middle and still unsure who to vote for?
I'm really on the fence this election. Most parties have almost as many policies I disagree with as ones which resonate with me.
I'm considering OPP, but I'm a bit worried they lack substance and political grit to deliver. I'm also strongly against land tax and UBI. But, I'm willing to take a risk that they won't get it across the line because I align with their bottom lines.
Anyone else feel like this?

Politics Just a reminder folks, there is a policy website you can use for research. It will show you the policies of each party and once you're done selecting policies you agree with, it will show you which party you most align with. Helpful if you're still undecided!

Advice How much is too much leave?
Hello everyone!
I (19F) recently started at a 9-5 Office job. Its my first ever 'big girl' job. My jobs pretty low stakes and nothing is ever super urgent tbh. I have been taking leave what I'd say evens out to be about a day a month.
My past couple months have looked like this:
August - 3 days off (went out of town) September : finished 3 hours early one day October: One half day off November: One half day off , One full Day off December: (To be booked) 1 day off.
I'm getting nervous about booking the December day off. I have over enough leave for it, and no one has ever mentioned having a problem with the amount of leave I'm taking - I'm just nervous there is some kind of office etiquette I'm not aware of? I'm curious to know your thoughts :)

Politics Sorry another political post, but no need to even mention any party alignment.
Are there any "young voters" (18-24) in this sub who haven't enrolled to vote? If so I'd love to understand why.
More than a third of you haven't and I can't get my head around it (although will try not to judge 😃) I've been brainstorming what policy/initiatives I would bring in to boost voter engagement/turnout especially in this demographic, but hard to do that when I can't figure out why!
Chur x
PS if you haven't not done it intentionally, the cut off this year is 25 October so get on it please 👍

Advice abortion help (potentially ectopic)
my girlfriend (18 soon 19) is still early (period 6 weeks ago). however, shes been going through immense pain and we're scared it might be ectopic. however, we both live with our parents and dont want them to know. i just want to know what we could possibly do, where to go and if theres any way she can go through this surgery without having to stay at the clinic/hospital. we both havent been through this ever and since we're very young to go through this and know no one thats been through this either, we are worried how this will go. any help or advice would be appreciated.
thank you and no hate or debates on abortions please ^^
