Moving isn’t anything new for seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday or his family. He, a 15-year major league left fielder, his two sons, Jackson and Ethan, both professional baseball players, and his wife, Leslee, understand the nomadic nature of the profession.
“We’re baseball people,” Holliday said. “We’ve bought and sold and moved a million times. So it’s kind of kind of what we do.”
Even when it involves selling their multimillion-dollar, 136-acre Stillwater, Okla., property that they built from the ground up. The house includes a full baseball diamond, batting cages, a custom pool, a pickleball court, running trails, and more in the backyard of the property.
“There’s lots to do if you like being outside,” Matt said. “Jackson used to go out there and hit golf balls. Make his own little golf holes all over the property, and hit it over the water. So, if you like to be outside, it’s a great spot.”
Holliday bought the property in 2018 for $3 million, started building the house in 2020, and moved in in 2022. It was once the most expensive property in the state, according to Realtor Wyatt Poindexter, who is selling the home at a listed price of $8.95 million.
By the time Holliday spoke with The Athletic in October, he and his wife had been living in Arizona since February, and were thinking about moving from that home.
For the Hollidays, home is just the walls that enclose their family at a given moment. But it doesn’t take away from the behemoth they built on the prairie and are now trying to sell.
Holliday is originally from Stillwater and made his major-league debut for the Colorado Rockies in 2004. In 2009, after a brief stint in Oakland, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he spent 7 1/2 seasons, retiring in 2018 after cameos with the New York Yankees and Rockies again.
During most of his career, his wife and kids split time with him in St. Louis during the season and at a home in Jupiter, Fla., in the offseason.
“We were always together,” he said. “We didn’t do the living apart thing.”
