Apparently you can fix lactose intolerance by loading yourself with lactose and probiotics at the same time for a brief period, albeit you WILL have severe intestinal distress for a while(weeks).
A youtuber documented her process of drinking like high lactose milkshake powder meant for nutritionally deficient refugees until she stopped having explosive diarrhea and criminal farts.
One of the things to keep in mind in science is repeated results across a variety of people reported on by a reputable source. I tried it once, and it did NOT work at all. Made it worse, actually (or it just got worse on its own. Happens).
Later on my doctor told me not to fucking do that again because it caused a bunch of inflammation. Point is, don’t blow up your bowels without talking to a doctor first, at least.
Tbf the youtuber based her experiment off a study published by a doctor in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Just maybe read the study yourself first and then consult with your doctor before doing it.
I almost agree with the idea, but trust me when I say you don't want morons reading actual studies because they will still come away with the wrong take but now they'll argue "I actually have read the study have you?"
It is also not necessary to do it this way, you can take small doses of milk daily over a longer period of time and slowly ramp up the amount and get the same results. You don't have to do an insane amount and just brute force it.
I developed lactaid-required levels of intolerance in my late 20s about a month after a camping trip. Had been a fierce milk enjoyer with no issues (even on the trip) my whole life. 8ish years later I went on vacation to a tropical country where the only milk products I had access to came from the dairy directly next door, with minimal processing. I was just curious about it to see if I would react differently and tried a cup. No reaction happened, so I gorged on milk products for the two weeks because I had missed them so much.
Still 0 idea how I got it and what exactly got rid of it but it's been 4 years, I haven't had any more raw dairy since that trip (except maybe occasional cheese, raw milk isn't legal here), and i'm still no longer lactose intolerant.
OK, but this effect has been reported by actual doctors. I remember reading an article about how USAID (remember when that was a thing?) was supplying dried milk to hospitals in third world countries, where pretty much everyone is lactose intolerant, but because they had nothing else, they fed it to the patients anyway and over the course of a couple weeks, they started digesting it properly. Still anecdotal of course, but it's not just some youtube saying it.
Yeah I responded to someone else. It’s like half to 2/3 report decreased symptoms in the studies I’ve read and from what my doc said. Way less than that report no symptoms afterwards. And even many of those that report no symptoms are still found to have damaged gut flora and inflammation afterwards since their body is still struggling with it. It just gives up on the diarrhea and stuff since you’re shoveling lactose in regardless.
A lot of people just can’t make more lactase no matter how much you try to jump start it, and trying to force it isn’t a great idea. Even in the studies it’s not the crazy amounts like in that YouTube video everyone brings up.
It varies from person to person of course, but since lactase tablets and lactose free options are so plentiful now I’d say it’s not worth the effort unless you’re in a situation where you have to eat it.
I mean, I wasn’t going crazy crazy with it. Drinking whole milk with meals and having a serving of ice cream and a serving of soft cheese a day for a few weeks. Still enough to walk around all day with a pregnant looking bloated belly and horrific gas.
Ended with me more lactose intolerant than before, general stomach issues that cleared up after months on probiotics, and pretty bad inflammation in my guts.
Like, I was doing the sane version of it a few years before that girl on YouTube and that alone was enough to fuck me up. She didn’t invent the idea, she just made it annoyingly popular for people who get annoyed at me skipping cheese and ice cream to frame my lactose intolerance as my fault.
Some more anecdotal evidence: my friend was able to regain the ability to digest lactose by slowly introducing lactose to their diet, and I did the same while also eating alot of probiotics (kimchi and sauerkraut, make sure the culture is still alive and making gas when you open the jar).
I think there’s a difference between true lactose intolerance and a lactose sensitivity tho and that could explain some of the difference in experiences.
I’m lactose sensitive, and if I go more than a week or two without lactose, my shit is fucked the next time I eat it. But if I slowly reintroduce it, I’m fine and it’s not that bad of a transition.
I’m not truly lactose intolerant tho. My dad is, and he absolutely needs his lactaid lmao, no amount of milk will build his tolerance and he’s basically unable to work for days if he slips up.
Yeah, that’s the thing. I wouldn’t really bother correcting people on it except that there were some health effects for me for eating dairy (and not the heavy amounts in the video), and that people both online and in person have started acting like my lactose intolerance is my fault since the video came out. It’s becoming a bit annoying.
Bodies are different, and even if you can tolerate a few weeks of agony to eat cheese without taking a pill, not everyone will want to bother.
Yeah, it doesn’t help that there’s not an easy way to distinguish the two so I’m sure many people who only have sensitivities were told they have an intolerance.
People definitely like to act like experts when they personally find success with something like this, conveniently forgetting about all the trends they’ve tried that didn’t end up working out for them. If it works, good for you! But that doesn’t mean it’ll work for everybody
Years ago I suddenly seemed to have an aversion to both dairy and pork that went on for months. They'd cause discomfort, and the most vile "WHAT DIED IN HERE" gas and poo I've ever had. Eventually I just stopped eating dairy and pork. And the problem stopped.
I lasted about a month before I had to have an ice cream... no problems. So I had pork... no problems again. Haven't had the problems since.
My armchair assumption is my gut biome bloomed with something that fed off of something common to both pork and dairy but just didn't digest it "correctly", and that I unintentionally starved it out.
As fun as that sounds, my body is already like one of those hidden temples that was once lost to time and recently rediscovered.
It's old; the doors creak, and it's full of what you hope are just spiders. You're also pretty sure this bitch must be haunted or possessed or something because, just calling it by the vibes, something is clearly not right with the place.
The last thing I need is to load up on lactose and probiotics at the same time and hope and pray it doesn't end like one of the scenes from the movie The Stuff . Knowing my luck, that unholy combination will be enough to perhaps scare away a few ghosts, but the lacto-stuffed chemical cocktail will have reached sentience, and I'll be the second person to be taken over and practically zombified by that newly birthed parasite. Hell, I'll even document it on YouTube to spread the good word.
Though at least I wouldn't be lactose intolerant anymore...fuck it, sign me up, boys.
It’s a pretty interesting topic! Because you can’t fix the fact that your own cells don’t make enough lactase, but there’s still bacteria growing in your gut that do. If you can promote their growth enough or somehow acquire a more efficient strain, they’ll help alleviate symptoms by breaking down lactose for you. It’s the same reason that fermented dairy products like yogurt tend to be easier on the stomach - the bacteria eat a lot of the lactose during fermentation, so less makes it to your stomach.
But because gut microbiomes vary so much between individuals, it’s basically a 50/50 on if it’ll work and there’s really no way to know beforehand. You could see positive results, or you could just cause a ton of gastrointestinal distress (and potentially damage!) for nothing. It makes it kind of hard to recommend actually doing this; if you do, it’s at your own risk.
Personally, I started eating a ton of yogurt and that’s worked pretty well for me so far, but my symptoms were never very severe to begin with. I like to say hi to the lactobacillus cultures as I eat them.
My stomach has a hard time digesting food and absorbing nutrients. One thing I've noticed is that the more you stop eating something, the worse your intolerance gets. So I just keep eating my "trigger" foods in moderation. Good to know theres some sources out there to back it up haha
Uhh... this is a terrible suggestion, you don't have to OVERLOAD yourself with milk you can literally just take small amounts every day and slowly ramp up the amount over time and you will likely eventually become tolerant of lactose. Granted a full permanent cure from either method of this you choose is unlikely but as long as you have dairy in your diet you should retain the ability to tolerate it much better.
Works for about half to two thirds of people in most studies I looked at. Most of them don’t become tolerant but just report a lessening of symptom severity or simply no worsening.
Those that do become “tolerant” apparently often are still having negative effects like inflammation or damage to gut flora, but without the dramatic symptoms. According to my doc who told me to just avoid lactose and take lactase when I don’t.
If you mean for those who did it by brute forcing it, that is great but I would at least try the other option first because the turmoil and inflammation you cause to your digestive system will be crazy.
Lol, i knew it was going to be either tiktok or youtube. I'm sure it was all honest reporting and not at all to sell her own probiotics and get views for revenue. But go ahead, do what your celebrity tells you to do.
Medical papers can be forged and created with ChatGPT. Influencers and content creators are in it for the monetization and to sell their own product, which you haven't refuted. Their probiotics is no different than any other brand.
And yes, I did refute it with the first words of the last comment. No, she's not selling probiotics. Skepticism is healthy, but you're just making random assumptions lol.

Edit: here's the follow up video from 4 years after, so you can look at the papers she cited in both videos if you want.
