Well: A7 in Germany goes all the way from Flensburg, on the Danish border up in the very north of Germany to Füssen on the Austrian border in the very south. 🤷♂️
Many phenomena — wars, plagues, sudden audits — have been advanced as evidence for the hidden hand of Satan in the affairs of Man, but whenever students of demonology get together the M25 London orbital motorway is generally agreed to be among the top contenders for Exhibit A.
You knowing that off the top of your head strikes me as quintessentially British. It reminds me of an old Monty Python sketch where there is a murder and the guilty party is found out because everyone else is intimately familiar with train schedules and train construction.
i know that episode. people starting travelling, hoping to reach their destination in time for their young to grow up and start a life there. Lemme see if i can find it. Wait here! edit: Gridlock!
Side of the road. Actually, the whole queue took to twitter and we were all chatting to each other while we waited (this was before, when twitter was merely a shithole, not the Nazi hellscape it is now). Lot's of encouragement for those that were holding in a poo. I think a few people actually went for a bush poo.
A lorry carrying lithium batteries had caught fire in front of us and melted the road surface.
I carry a camp toilet for long road trips and have absolutely gone for a poo in the (covered) bed of my pickup truck. In fairness it was quite late and I was positively desperate. The nearest town was still about an hour away at the time. After my third act of desperation I figured I was better off having a sleep and had quite a restful 6-hour nap in the back seat.
Not in a single journey but I think I have now done almost the entire M6 in 3rd gear or less. There are a couple of bits of the lakes where i haven't gotten stuck and that's about it. Still never been at a total stop more than an hour but will try to be prepared knowing it can happen.
Those fucking averaging cameras! We have an office in Manchester (Didsbury). I last went up pre covid.
Left at 04:00 assuming the M25 would be the worst bit. In out of the M25 in under an hour.
M40 a joy as always just pick a speed that your nerve can handle.
M42 start behaving again. M6 pre toll behaving.
M6 Toll = rag the absolute shit out of the hire car.
M6 normal = Averaging cameras on and off for around 40 fucking miles. Signs every 5 miles of a child saying "my daddy works here" this caused more irrational anger as clearly his Daddy was fucking skiving along with all of his work mates. Could feel my very soul erroding whilst also keeping an eye on the Polish lorry driver behind me clearly seeing how close he can get to my rear end.
M56 = what is this fresh hell?
M60 = nearly there short stint on the M60, Hire cars satnav froze and my stressed brain didnt notice until Stockport. Had to come off and come back onto the M60.
Needless to say my sense of humour was somewhat lacking for a few hours after that
I once hit it at 23:30 on the way back from Manchester, what should have been a 45min blast to my exit was an additional 3hr nightmare, a lorry had jack knifed blocking all 4 lanes next to an exit junction. so all the cars had to filter off and filter back on to the M25.
I mean, not in my experience in the middle of nowhere. They are usually less then 3 hours. Only seen something close to 45 on the 405 in L.A. (on a Sunday because I didn't drive in L.A.) and 2 hours for avalanche blasts in Colorado.
Wasn't there an old couple a few years ago who had to be rescued from M25? They kept missing their exit and rather than taking the next exit they just kept doing laps of entire motorway

For the UK, 8hrs on the M25 = still on the fucking M25 in traffic
