New advertising rule

Recently we have had lots of advertising spam in the subreddit so we have implemented a new rule:

Rule 3:

Advertising a brand new game you made is fine as long as it is secure, safe, and free. What is not ok is linking your Patreon or other things that will make you revenue including paid games.

This subreddit is meant for educational purposes and is not an advertising dump. You should post maps only to get educational feedback and to improve your creation.

Posts/comments are removed at moderator discretion but feel free to reach out to us if you feel like your post/comment was incorrectly removed.

Resource I made a browser-based terrain generator for custom maps, with erosion and matching textures

Hey everyone!

A while ago, I shared a simple free browser-based heightmap tool here, and I was surprised by how much interest it got. Some of the feedback was about wanting to create custom landscapes and fantasy terrain, rather than being limited to real-world elevation data. So I've been working on something new:

Terrain Maker 3D.It's a browser-based tool for generating and editing your own 3D landscapes. You can generate mountains, valleys, hills and canyons, sculpt the terrain directly in 3D, apply hydraulic and thermal erosion, or import an existing heightmap.

One feature I spent a lot of time developing is the terrain texture generator. It currently includes 5 texture presets that generate textures to match your terrain. I wanted to make it easier to get something visually useful right away, instead of ending up with a great heightmap but having to create all the textures from scratch. The generated textures aren't meant to replace detailed manual work, but I think they can be a really useful starting point for creating more elaborate maps.

You can export 8-bit and 16-bit PNG heightmaps, along with albedo textures.

Try it here: https://3d-map-generator.com/3d-map-generator-app/terrain_maker_3d/

I'd love to hear what you think, especially about the terrain textures.

THANK YOU :)

Hi everyone, sharing this massive project here again. Working my way north to south on detailing buildings and trees. I welcome feedback or suggestions of how to make the project better. I am still on the fence of whether or not I should add labels! Enjoy ⚡️

Map Looking for feedback on my first fantasy map

Post image

I am currently creating my first real fantasy map (for visualising while world building) and I have finished the first draft of the shapes of my Continents. I am quite happy about the big western Continent but i am not really sure about the rest. I would appreciate honest feedback in any kind of form as i am still in the process of creating and figuring things out. My next step will be to draw mountain ranges and river systems

New roadmap: we are still in Tír Ghlas, in the northeastern province of Glannach.

An Grianán, the capital, lies on the shores of Lake Damháin Alla (Spider Lake); various roads connect it to the island's other regions.

I’ve included these images as WIP, since I was asked about my process.

Will you cross this oozing, stagnant pool that is said to house hidden basilisks? Venture into the Land of the Tarnished but be sure to hold your breath, for the bubbling pools release noxious vapours that would choke a careless traveller.

Map Map of the Solarian Coalition's greatest extension during the Asterra War in my fictional world, 1947. what do you guys think? Lmk

I Made this map for my fictional world, Asterra, showing the Solarian Coalition at its peak during the Asterra War in 1947 which is essential the WWW equivalent, and Yes I know, if u read the Dead Ahead Wikipedia page u can easily tell the map layout is based on the Forman War map from Dead Ahead which i took direct inspiration from (atp I mighr as well copied it lol), to understand why it's because I've been a big fan of Centaura/dead ahead for a very long time and it gave me the inspiration to make my own world and also i thought it would be okay lmao, and which is why i used it a reference while adapting it to my own world. The countries, borders, and lore are entirely my own ideas and project but it is still a work in progress, sooooo some details may change as I develop the story.

Resource Looking For A Program

Post image

Hey there! I'm trying to find a good (preferably free or cheap) map making program that allows me to mimick a city brochure map, like the one in the example I have attached.

This is for a ttrpg and I would like to be able to recreate this design for a fictional city.

Thanks!

Discussion Rice method tips?

Hello, I'd like to create a world map for my novel series, but I lack the funds to properly pay an artist to do so more. I'm not a very visually artistic person, and can't really create things from scratch in my head.

That said, I think the rice method seems the best option for me in regards to fulfilling my vision, and I was interested if anyone had any tips on how to do that exactly, where to start, etc etc.

Thank you for your time,

G

The first one is just the biomes, the second is what is supposed to be a more minimalist of the map and the last is the height map incase y'all were interested to see why the biomes are placed where they are, ill take any criticisme you think i should adjust.

Map World of Aprahan (Political Atlas)

Thumbnail

Kaixo!
Finally, I have mostly finished the overall atlas (excluding the legend about these capital cities and main cities/administrative subdivisions of these political entities as it was too crowded to fit on a map)
These two maps represent the nations of the Aprahan world layout, which involved roughly 195 countries and 5 observer states (those are the holy kingdom of Argaputh, Trúagorath, Claguthia, Vildythia, and Baskapath, located in the Aethracia political continent in the Northern Hemisphere)
Additionally, it reflects the early modern era, a period defined by treaties that recognized identities and autonomy, settled borders, and resolved past disputes among nations—many of whose royal monarchies endure to this day.
I am still doing more and more research to write out Factbooks for more info about the story, so stay tuned!
This is a massive update compared to the simplified version I posted a while ago. I hope you guys enjoy it (I didn't get enough sleep)

Discussion Realism of Climate?

Thumbnail
gallery
126 Upvotes

Is this map any good at all? I feel like the landmass isn't, but I don't mind that. What I'm worried about is climate and if I've put the right things in the right places. I didn't really know what to do with the grasslands, so I just sort of threw a mountain range in the centre.

Edit: The thing is pretty much just a majority of the Northern U.S states such as Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, a portion of the U.K but rotated, Norway, and Canada all smashed together.

I decided to draw road maps of Tír Ghlas, mainly to make my job easier when describing the journeys of my novels' protagonists... this is the first one, created today.

It is drawn using Sakura Pigma Micron pens of various line widths and then colored with watercolors.
