Discussion I hate the new Face ID
I know some of you may say that it’s working flawlessly for you, but it’s been horrible for me. I’ve had the iPhone 18 pro for three days, and the Face ID NEVER works when I wake up in the morning. It also doesn’t work at certain angles when I’m lying down.
I upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro, and I can confidently say that the 12 pro’s Face ID worked 100% better than the 18 pro’s. I’ve attempted to reset it but to no avail. I’m at my wits end with this.

Zero issues! Never had an issue with Face ID. I did add a second scan without glasses.

u/TuneHeavy8740 1d ago
No issues. Though it’s a bit easier to unlock. On my 14 pro it didn’t unlock if my eyes werent aiming at the screen. Now it unlocks as long as my face is in the frame.

Yeah that’s not supposed to happen, currently Apple support has a case open because i complained about it. The technician i talked to earlier today suspects a hardware glitch regarding the truedepth cam, they apparently switched one of the suppliers and now the TrueDepth is acting up on some 18 Pros. If it’s the case that Attention awareness indeed doesn’t behave correctly go ahead and open a case with support, the more cases they have the sooner we might get a fix / replacement

He cambiado el 18 4 veces, en los 4 pasa lo mismo. Tengo abierto tanto una incidencia a través de https://security.apple.com/reports como a través de Genius presencialmente.

It’s my first iPhone so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but seems to work well so far.

Yes, there are issues but I reset t Face ID and added an alternate scan and it’s better not not 100%. It will unlock my phone but occasionally (randomly) it will immediately prompt for password code to unlock after picking up the from from an idle state. So definitely something going on that hopefully a software fix can address.
Unfortunate that you’re having more issues than me but I would definitely reset Face ID and start fresh, also include the laying down angles.

Is this an iOS 27 thing because since updating my Face ID has been garbage on my iphone 17 pro. It was also terrible on the 18 pro. But older phone like the 16e not on iOS 27 seem to be mostly fine.

u/RecordAdventurous562 1d ago
14 and mine has been horrible since updating. Also asking me to enter passcode multiple times a day (without even offering Face ID).
1
u/Salt-Silver-7097 1d ago
Same for me. 17 pro max and since updating to 27, faceID has been garbage when unlocking my phone. Any app calls for faceID work flawlessly. It’s only when unlocking the phone does it suck. Even reset it, didn’t help

Coming from the 16 pro, it feels faster to me. I have 0 issues with Face ID and I even have a privacy screen on it.

Most of the time, Face ID works fine. But the failure rate is noticeably higher than anything I've experienced since the very first Face ID iPhone. Especially in low-light conditions, it often takes several attempts to unlock the phone. And whenever my face is partially covered, particularly when wearing a mask, Face ID is practically unusable now. Even after setting up an alternate appearance and enabling Face ID with a Mask, including adding my glasses, it still struggles. If Apple doesn't manage to fix this, I'll probably wait for the Air 2 and switch to that instead.

My faceid is hit or miss. It’s better with the 27.0.1 patch but still not as good on all my previous devices. iOS 27 betas seemed better on my 17pm than the UN“stable release” of iOS 27.

u/wittyuserid 1d ago
It was ass for me too. Until I added alternate scans 2 times. Seems to have fixed it.

u/MrChris199826 1d ago
Honestly do a Face ID reset, then enroll it again, make sure you do the option for use Face ID with mask so it does the scan of your upper face. Have done this for thousands of customers.

u/goldfouledanchor 1d ago
Am I the only one with zero issues? It even works at my desk and it only sees half of my face.
1
u/SwiftblazeJedi 1d ago
You’re not alone. It works perfectly for me as well. I did set up an alternate scan to account for very different glasses, but haven’t had any issues.

OK, I’ve noticed mine does not open up every time either with face scans. It usually does, but once in a while I have to try it a couple times
1
u/Psyren1317 1d ago
Mine has been mostly fine except in the case you mentioned which is in the mornings. When I first wake up in the morning it almost NEVER works. Which is annoying.
1
u/infobhan 1d ago
Did you try to add an alternate scan done first thing in the morning? Some people (myself included) tend to be a bit...puffy in the morning.

u/Muffdivah 1d ago
Lmao I didn’t even realize it till I read on here I was like damn this thing ask for the code often

u/drhav2023 1d ago
Apple really dropped the ball on this one… Steve Jobs is turning over in his grave right now. You’d think the people running the show would have tested this shit out beforehand to make sure it worked…Are they daft?! 🤪

It’s like when they put cameras under the display and the pictures came out blurry. Face ID is the same way now they put it on the display.

u/Nice-Ambassador6293 1d ago
Do you have a privacy screen protector?
1
u/caitsfingerlessglove 1d ago
No, I have the FLOLAB regular screen protector (which I strongly recommend btw)

Did you import all of your previous iPhone's settings when you set it up? If so, the FaceID may not behave correctly and you need to set up FaceID from scratch.
1
u/SpecialistSyllabub56 1d ago
i have glasses with a lens filter that make it harder for cameras to read your face my 16 pro did not behave well with them but my 18 pro has been flawless so far. I did end up setting it up as a new device opposed to restoring from a back up... in my experience that's always the way to go

If you’re in the 14 day return window, go and exchange your phone. I had all kinds of Face ID issues outlined in this thread and ultimately exchanged the phone: https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone18pro/s/IhQqTI6Cyz
The exchanged phone is performing much better than the original one, but I have to say its Face ID performance is garbage compared to my old 16 Pro. The smaller, relocated sensor performs much worse in low light and you need to watch how you’re holding the device. It is also much poorer at closer/off axis scans. I am super disappointed with this but already sent my old phone my daughter’s way so I’m stuck.

I’m about to have plastic surgery at the end of the month and I am sooo curious as to what’s about to happen 😂
2
u/caitsfingerlessglove 1d ago
Tbh I’d probably probably remove Face ID before the surgery and turn it back on once everything heals just so I don’t get locked out of anything I’ve forgotten passwords to!
1
u/roccerfeller 1d ago
Sorry to hear man. I have zero issues, works fine from all angles and in dark. But I also do the “with a mask” part (without wearing a mask) so it does 2 scans. Try that

u/Goldensrule7 1d ago
Same!!! I did the update hoping it would get better. It did slightly cause I was having my phone randomly reset when it didn’t work but it does not nearly work like my air did. At night in darker rooms especially laying down it barely works
1
u/pheebs95 1d ago
yeah i set it up without makeup on and now when I wear makeup it doesn’t recognize me. I don’t even wear that much makeup (literally blush, mascara & sometimes I fill in my brows) so it’s not like i’m unrecognizable

I’ve also been having quite a few issues with it, and also rather frustratingly unlock with Apple Watch doesn’t seem to be working as well as it used to. Other than that, the phone’s been brilliant though.
1
u/Silent_Watercress400 13h ago
That also is really annoying. My watch unlocks it about 10% of the time. WTAF Apple?! 🤡🤡
2
u/Silent_Watercress400 13h ago
But oddly enough today my watch is unlocking the phone nearly 100% of the time even though nothing has been changed on either the phone or the watch. 🤷♂️

u/quetiapinenapper 1d ago
Yeah mine doesn’t work laying down or in low light. It’s kind of crap compared to the 17 pro.
1
u/Tricky-Ad3259 1d ago
Yeah man, that Face ID is trash, new models are useless!!! (-Typed aggressively from his 14 PM) Pd: Love my freaking 14
1
u/DeyanCat 1d ago
The whole point of Face ID is that you shouldn't have to change how you hold your phone just to unlock it. If I have to sit up or move my face into the perfect position every morning that's a downgrade not an upgrade lol
1
u/Sweet_Job_5021 1d ago
Delete your current scans a redo it. This time, when yoy do the face id scan, exaggerate it. Dont make eye contact with the camera, literally look way up at the ceiling and rotate your head clockwise. Mine has never missed a scan, even if i have the phone flat on the table in front of me. Gotta let it scan you from diff angles if you want it to recognize you from
Diff angles

u/BuddyCreative 1d ago
The new Face ID scanner is underneath the screen. So not at all surprised it’s having issues. This has always been the case with under-display cameras even on android. Just lower resolution = worse scans/images.

My FACE ID doesn’t work either but I was told
It’s due to the type of screen protector I have so I ordered a basic one to see if that helps

u/Robinson1219 19h ago

0 issues here I have 18 pro max . With privacy glass screen protector and it works flawlessly in uk . Eu version phone

u/zZeroPhoquez 16h ago
Re do your faceid and do the mask as well you probably set it up in poor lighting may just be user error

u/OwnRelation1645 14h ago
Only thing I’m concerned about with this phone is if the PM was the right choice rather than the pro lol

Did you try redoing your face ID do you wear glasses where you have to set an alternative appearance
If none of those work return it/or use your limited warranty to get fixed or replaced you have a year with a free limited warranty on hardware/software

u/Ale_xndr0 12h ago
Agree I got the iPhone 14 Pro Max 100 correct this new iPhone 18 pro max always a bug that I got out the passcode every 10 Face ID because don’t recognize me
1
u/gadgetlovr 11h ago
I’ve got the occasional issue on my 18 Pro and am wondering if it’s because they moved the front camera to the side. I was running the same OS on my iPhone 15 prior and worked every time. I think. Because the camera isn’t in the middle is it less forgiving of certain angles?

My face is completely different in the morning until gravity kicks in.

u/jeff1f1racer 1d ago
Update your software to 27.2 beta 3. Then, redo the FaceID. Works perfectly on both my 18 Pro & 18 Pro Max. You totally ignored software.
Problem solved.

My iPhone 16 face id didn’t work when I had a N95 on. The face id on my 18 Pro seems to work better than my 16
