Academics How are the engineering programs so far?

I heard that ISU initiated engineering programs last year. How do you like it so far? I'm most interested in ME students point of view but any engineering students' thoughts are also welcome. Do you get some research opportunities with the faculty as an undergrad? How are the courses? Is there anything that you would like to have in terms of the program in terms of the courses or any engagement opportunities? How are your peers?

Work/life balance transfer

I’m 20 years old. I just transferred from a community college to a isu. I’m struggling, my classes are hard , I’m not the greatest with time management and I get easily distracted by social media and it’s a problem. I’m living in an apartment with 3 other people for the first time ever and it feels lonely, I feel like I live by myself, none of my roommates like to hangout with each other it’s just living together to make it all work. It’s weird. I’m working 15 hours a week but have clubs and other things im involved in. I am thinking of cutting my work hours but the issue is that if I do that i won’t be making enough, I am always owing my mother for insurance and then paying for my own groceries etc on my own. I have a meal plan but like to cook when I can. My parents are divorced My mother is zero help in any of this even tho she makes over 6 figures, she’s very frugal, I basically do everything on my own, she expects me to pay all this money for the insurance but then it’s a problem when I ask her for money or even $20. I need to cut my hours to focus more on school and enjoy my time here, but im always like owing her money, so im stressing about that on top of everything. My tuition and rent is paid for by my scholarship that I have. And in order to keep that I need my grades to be high. It is pretty much impossible to get through to her that I would appreciate a couple dollars for some things here and there and it’s always stressing me out because all she talks about is how I need to hand over my paycheck to pay her. This is absolutely exhausting, on top of the fact that she is no help when it comes to finding a place to live next year, etc. I’m lucky my father gives me some money every once in a while, but he’s always like “what about your mom she should too” but she doesn’t and never will. I feel like I am drowning. Ever since my mother got re married she refuses to buy my groceries or help in anyway when I need a couple of dollars, and refuses to help with figuring my college stuff out and next semesters etc. Seems like she checked out 8 years ago, when she got caught having an affair. I AM TIRED.

Academics Language in Humanities Gen Eds

I'm planning for my spring semester and still need a LH gen ed. I'm hoping to get into ENG 124 but I'm worried it will fill up fast and need a backup. What's the difference between COM, ENG, and LAN 128? And ENG and LAN 125? What would you recommend?

Request Been 6 years after I graduated with a Creative Technologies degree, still looking for a job as a environment artist in the games industry, where do I look?

I've studied Creative Technologies at ISU and graduated back in 2020. Most of my skills and work I had to learn myself like 3D modeling, texturing, sculpting, etc. and I have a solid portfolio of work as well. My academic advisor was reassuring me at the time that there are plenty of jobs out there I can get as a environment artist or 3D artist when I expressed my concerns that I wouldn't be able to find work after I graduate, yet 6 years later, I've been applying to many jobs, tailoring my resume, reaching out to people on LinkedIn, trying to get into a paid indie game studio, but I cannot find any work. I feel played with because I still have student loans I'm trying to pay off but unfortunately I don't even make enough money to make much progress. I work a full time office job to pay the bills now. How can I get a job in the industry? Any advice for me?

Housing Cardinal Court as a Junior/Senior

Hey all, I’m currently a sophomore and I’m looking to live in Cardinal Court my Junior and potentially Senior year so that I can still get some money off housing rather than paying fully for an apartment. It says online that I have to request to live in, but I can’t find any other information on that. Is there nothing I can do currently, or can I submit some kind of request now?

Is there anywhere local (like a bar) to watch ISU football games?

Got a sort of mini reunion of friends going on in BloNo beginning of October. We would like to watch the football game from somewhere warm as it's a night game and we're kind of old by now. Any suggestions?

Illinois State followup on my preseason preview, plus we launched a free weekly CFB pick'em

Hey guys! The season preview I posted here a few weeks back did pretty well, so circling back like I said I would.

I had you at 8-4, and said winning two of three road toss-ups at North Dakota, Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois would make that look light. You already have the first one, 28-24 at NIU, and you're 4-0 with Western Illinois (41-10) and Eastern Illinois (49-13) in there too. The quarterback room played out differently than I expected. Pellant started, but Gage Roy has been the guy the last two weeks, 20 of 23 at NIU and 13 of 19 for 172 and 2 TDs against EIU. Is it his job now? Northern Iowa on the road today.

What are you guys seeing that the box scores aren't, and how do you see the season ending up?

Quick aside since it's in the title, we just launched a free weekly college football pick'em, $225 in prizes this week. Ten games, pick the winners, nothing to buy. Picks lock at noon ET, well before your kickoff, so this is a last call.

Advice for IT 168 from a former grad assistant

I was a grad assistant for IT 168 from Aug 2022 to May 2023. I taught several lab sections of IT 168.

I also went to ISU for undergrad in computer science, and finished my master's in cybersecurity in Dec 2023.

Here's some advice on how to get through IT 168 from an insider:

The tough part about this class is that all the sections (5 or 6 a semester) have to take the tests at the same time. So the tests are in the evening and in a huge lecture hall in a different building. **The tests are pencil and paper.** Which is tough with code! They give you some leeway with spelling and "typos" but you MUST practice writing out your answers on paper. It takes a different part of your brain, so don't let the first time you actually write down code be during the test.

There is a **tutoring center just for IT students**. Grad assistants are there to help with test prep and assignments.

There will probably be a **"how to succeed in IT168" meeting** at the beginning of the semester. **GO TO IT!** They will tell you how to do well in this course and what resources are available to you.

If it's already happened, ask your professor about what was talked about at that meeting.

**Start your assignments early!** They are big programs, with multiple parts. Start as soon as it's assigned, about two weeks before it's due. Break up the assignment into parts, code a bit at a time, and test as you go! This might be obvious to anyone who has coded before, but not everyone knows to do this.

Pay attention in lecture, ask lots of questions in the lab section. The lab sections are run by grad assistants, and the purpose of the lab is to practice what you learn in lecture, and make mistakes there instead of in assignments. The labs are graded much easier than the assignments. Basically completion grades.

This class is a good foundation for later CS classes. If your major is Comp Sci, and not Information systems or cybersecurity, you will take further Java classes. And the fundamentals transfer to other languages.

I saw a big gap as a grad assistant between students who kept on top of assignments, went to class/lab, and students who got behind, and dropped the class.

You may have to repeat the course if you don't pass. I had to re-take a class or two as an undergrad student. It definitely happens, and is nothing to feel shame about. The new grade replaces the old one for your GPA, so a retake will boost your GPA.

The school of IT administrators know this class is hard for students, and offer a lot of support to help students who are willing to put in the work.

People say IT 168 is a "weed out" class, but the impression I got from the department director was that they didn't like that so many students failed or dropped 168. It doesn't look good to higher ups at ISU if too many students are failing, IMO. So the department offers resources to help you succeed.

I hope this helps!
