I am writing this because I wish I had read such a post. Today my pants were in a locker at LA Fitness. Sometime during the time I was in the gym, the locker was opened, all cash in the pocket was taken, and a Discover card was taken. I did not realize this until about an hour later, Discover sent me a text questioning a $1500 charge at Ralphs on Goldenwest and Garfield. I said no, not me, then I looked and my card was not in the wallet in the pocket, then I realized all the cash was also gone. So this was a theft by someone who knew what they were doing. It turned out that there had been 3 previous charges that were now pending at the same Ralphs, in total a little over $5000. They were trying to extract as much from the card as they could as quickly as they could. Three charges went through, then Discover texted me, that one was declined, then they tried it again and it was declined. This all happened within half an hour. The good part for me is that the others are going to be deleted, but the store or the bank or someone will probably lose some money to these thieves. And I lost more than I should have.
So I've been going there for 10 years and it is a big shock. Somehow it seemed like a safe place. I am just very very glad my phone was not in the locker. That would have been a disaster.
I wondered how this could be done when the lock was still operational. I looked up shimming locks on youtube and my old Masterlock probably took 10 seconds to open.
So it was bad, but here is what I've learned. Never again will money, wallet, keys, phone, go with me into the gym. I will be getting a new lock that is resistant to shimming. Goodbye to my old Masterlock I've been using for 10 years. I'll get a new credit card in the mail and life will go on. Maybe the police will dig into cameras at Ralphs and find the thieves, this level of money is a pretty serious felony, but I'd say it's not that likely. Protect yourself. And yes, go ahead and tell me how dumb I am, I know.
