MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread
To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.
Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:
- What if every HV town was a person at a party?
- Moving to Newburgh
- How bad is Newburgh really?
- Is Wallkill safe for a gay interracial couple?
- Diversity in the Hudson Valley
- Queer couple considering the HV
- Moving to Woodstock
- Moving to Marlboro
- Moving to Rhinebeck
- Pros/Cons of Cold Spring
Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:
- Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
- Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

question Friends my age?
I made a similar post like this before but this one is more about people around my age (25m). I'm interested in games, art, alternative things, nature, and I'm open to new things. Also open to hosting game nights especially D&D. If anyone has any suggestions in the Dutchess area or just wants to talk dm me!

Warning for Traffic Hell this weekend in the Rhinebeck/Kingston/Poughkeepsie area.
This weekend is NY Sheep and Wool and it takes place at the Duchess county fairgrounds. It is the largest show of it's kind in the US. On Saturday buses will be coming in from everywhere within around 5 hours. I know of one yarn store in Maryland that has a charter. The fairgrounds will hit theme park density on Saturdays. Since this event has out grown the fairgrounds there are large side events in Saugerties, Kingston, and Hyde Park. Also the yarn store in Red Hook often draws a lot of traffic thanks to the free gift.
Hotels within 30 minutes of Rhinebeck are full and people start flooding in for events today. Rt 9, 9G, the Taconic, and 9W will see massive traffic jams. The Mid Hudson and the Rhinecliffe bridges will be very backed up. The festival ends at 5. This is when peak traffic will start. Expect restaurants around the area to be very crowded the next few days.
Most of the traffic hell will be a Saturday issue as the buses only come that day. Expect an upswing in the people trying to get from the train stations to the fairgrounds.
This is your friendly reminder that the tourist event is happening.

Favorite walking/hiking trails
I frequently go to the highland rail trail, walkway over Hudson, and I tried mt. Beacon and it whooped my ass. What are your favorite walking/hiking trails in the Hudson valley? Preferably the mid-Hudson region.

question Anyone know where Dr. Anna Samedova is going to?
She has been my mom's primary care provider at Saugerties Wellness Center for a while now, and we recently got a letter that she's leaving the practice in January.
It doesn't give any info as to where she's going, and I know sometimes they aren't allowed to directly say (to help prevent patient "poaching"), so wonder g if anyone has the skinny. Or is she just retiring?
I'd normally have my mom just make one more appointment with her to ask her directly, but my mom will be out of the country until after the New Year, so there won't be time.
TIA!

question Is this an appropriate sign for a publically-accessible government office?
Local HV town supervisor serving residents of all races, religions, and political alignment.
Maybe I'm just too hung up on the old-fashioned idea of the US as a secular nation and need to get with the times 🤷♀️
ETA: I appreciate people asking for a "name and shame" but there are very nice people working at that town hall who I'd hate to get caught on blast just because I'm rankled (plus im sure anyone from there seeing this post will know exactly who I am).
And hey, I dont know the whole story; maybe it belongs to a secretary, or its some kind of ironic "joke," or its not a space the public goes into usually (still a weird choice to have that on government property, or thought process to have when in government service). Maybe the person this belongs to is the kindest, most dedicated public servant the town has ever seen, and I'm just an agitating, whiny bitch.
I really thought everyone would crap on me for posting this. But I really felt strongly that this was something that shouldn't go without comment, because its so important that the public believe government represents and serves them and their interests; whatever was intended by this sign, if the person it belongs to ever sees this, I hope they understand that it's a poor message to send to the people you nominally care for and serve.
With love 🙏

question Events on Halloween Day?
Any family friendly events on Halloween day before trick or treating time? I see an event at Westchester Children’s Museum, it is kind of pricey. Events don’t have to be free but low cost is better. Ages 3-10 preferable

photo-video This Friday in Troy! Electronic / synth night at Collar Works with immersive visuals
Hope it's ok to share this here, we think it's worth the drive up to Troy for folks into this sort of thing! Kicking off a new performance series featuring synthesizer-based music - enjoy some incredible artists playing for the first time in the area as well as gorgeous projections filing every surface of an awesome former bank space.

Got some photos of a nice sailboat taking advantage of the nice weather and strong winds today. Figured I’d post them here in the rare chance the owner subscribes to this thread. Taken between whites marina and Chelsea yacht club.

Felice Brothers: looking for tickets for the doc screening 10/14
Hello! I'm looking for a couple tickets for the Woodstock Film Festival screening of Lunatic Dreamers tomorrow night 10/14 at Assembly. I'm new to the Felice Brothers - and new to the immediate area - and their song Days of the Years has been my crashout anthem the past couple of difficult months. Had this on my calendar but didn't realize it would sell out.
