Read this before asking. How to start hacking? The ultimate two path guide to information security.

13.5k Upvotes

Before I begin - everything about this should be totally and completely ethical at it's core. I'm not saying this as any sort of legal coverage, or to not get somehow sued if any of you screw up, this is genuinely how it should be. The idea here is information security. I'll say it again. information security. The whole point is to make the world a better place. This isn't for your reckless amusement and shot at recognition with your friends. This is for the betterment of human civilisation. Use your knowledge to solve real-world issues.

There's no singular all-determining path to 'hacking', as it comes from knowledge from all areas that eventually coalesce into a general intuition. Although this is true, there are still two common rapid learning paths to 'hacking'. I'll try not to use too many technical terms.

The first is the simple, effortless and result-instant path. This involves watching youtube videos with green and black thumbnails with an occasional anonymous mask on top teaching you how to download well-known tools used by thousands daily - or in other words the 'Kali Linux Copy Pasterino Skidder'. You might do something slightly amusing and gain bit of recognition and self-esteem from your friends. Your hacks will be 'real', but anybody that knows anything would dislike you as they all know all you ever did was use a few premade tools. The communities for this sort of shallow result-oriented field include r/HowToHack and probably r/hacking as of now.

The second option, however, is much more intensive, rewarding, and mentally demanding. It is also much more fun, if you find the right people to do it with. It involves learning everything from memory interaction with machine code to high level networking - all while you're trying to break into something. This is where Capture the Flag, or 'CTF' hacking comes into play, where you compete with other individuals/teams with the goal of exploiting a service for a string of text (the flag), which is then submitted for a set amount of points. It is essentially competitive hacking. Through CTF you learn literally everything there is about the digital world, in a rather intense but exciting way. Almost all the creators/finders of major exploits have dabbled in CTF in some way/form, and almost all of them have helped solve real-world issues. However, it does take a lot of work though, as CTF becomes much more difficult as you progress through harder challenges. Some require mathematics to break encryption, and others require you to think like no one has before. If you are able to do well in a CTF competition, there is no doubt that you should be able to find exploits and create tools for yourself with relative ease. The CTF community is filled with smart people who can't give two shits about elitist mask wearing twitter hackers, instead they are genuine nerds that love screwing with machines. There's too much to explain, so I will post a few links below where you can begin your journey.

Remember - this stuff is not easy if you don't know much, so google everything, question everything, and sooner or later you'll be down the rabbit hole far enough to be enjoying yourself. CTF is real life and online, you will meet people, make new friends, and potentially find your future.

Nfc rfid apartment assholes

Post image

Hi! I'm not super familiar with rfid/nfc and I'm trying to come up with a solution. My apartment building has securakey fobs and I want to copy mine so I can give it to my child. I asked my building for one and they said they'd be glad to give me one when they get more bc they are out. I'm guessing that's a lie or they will take forever as this new management company that took over my building is cheap and lazy. My son has started riding the bus home from school and I just started a new job and won't be home everyday when he gets home. So I did some research and some guy made a bounty in the flipperzero discord and got someone to come up with a hack for this brand of fob. I just don't want to have to pay $169 for a flipper zero, I mean I'd probably have fun with it but I am wondering how hard it would be to run the same thing on like a lilygo t embed or something. I wanted to ask about it but the post was old and locked and the OP doesn't seem to be active on reddit right now. So I am just wondering if anyone has any familiarity with this or an easy way to work this out. Thanks for any insight.

Education Is this a good learning roadmap for specializing in Web Security?

Hello, I want to start my journey to learn cybersecurity, and I want to specialize in web app security.

I want to start with pwn.college: 'Getting Started' to learn the basics, and then move on to the core materials—but only 'Intro to Cybersecurity' (specifically the 4 modules: Web Security, Intercepting Communication, Cryptography, and Access Control). After that, I want to switch to PortSwigger Web Security.

So please, is this a good way to specialize in web security?"

News Ahold Delhaize cybersecurity incident

Does anyone have any info about the Ahold Delhaize cybersecurity incident? Seems like all of their subsidiary grocery store websites were immediately taken down.

They said “payment info not believed to have been affected” but we have heard that before where a large company will give an update and say there was a compromise.

Stop and Shop is the only online website I can thing of where I actually store my credit card, so not sure if I should be cancelling it.

Anyone have the inside scoop?

News The worst password in the world

Someone claims he hacked Denmark's national registry, CPR, thanks to a '123456' password at a small Danish IT and data service comapny (Pays ApS).

He sais he found 3 different accounts with the '123456' password.

This person got access to 8.8 million people records - and while Dennmark has only ~5.5 million living residents the rest seem to be deceased or former residents.

I'd say this is a good way to start a hacking career. Minimal effort, maximun gain.

Question Does anyone here have any experience tweaking the Philips Hue light system? Spec. the dimmer switches?

Hi everyone,

I've tried this on the r/hue board with no luck. Trying here now. I'm talking the Philips Hue lighting system and the dimmer switch. If you don't know, it's a bunch of different lights that are controlled by a hub and, I think, the Zigbee protocol of IoT things. There are also stock and 3rd party apps

I have 2 dimmer switches, and I noticed recently that there's a large light jump when hitting the dimmer's brighter/dimmer buttons. The app has a brighness scale of 0-100, and the physical dimmer switches jump the brightness by 20 for each press, up or down.

I'm told there is definitely a way to change that number for something else, but the agent was reluctant to tell me specifically how. I want to change the skip steps so that the brightness changes like 5 steps each button push.

Anybody know anything about it? TIA!

Question What are the legal consequences of selling exploits to private buyers?

Hypothetically, suppose you discover several reasonably critical vulnerabilities in systems belonging to different organisations. You develop working exploits that can be used to gain unauthorised access to restricted systems or data.

Assume you've successfully tested the exploits and confirmed that they work, but you haven't stolen, modified or destroyed any data, and you haven't used the access for anything malicious.

Now imagine a random buyer offers you a substantial amount of money for one of these exploits.

Have you already committed a crime simply by exploiting the vulnerability to gain unauthorised access, even if you haven't done anything further?

Is possessing and selling a working exploit itself illegal, or does it depend on the circumstances?

Could you face prison time for selling it, even if you never personally use it for malicious purposes?

If the buyer subsequently uses the exploit to attack the organisation, could you be held criminally liable?

Would it make a legal difference if you genuinely didn't know what the buyer intended to do with it?

This is a hypothetical scenario.

News this 16 yo kid gained access to 17 trillion microsoft users records, by using "admin" as username

Thumbnail
blog.faav.net
6.4k Upvotes

the craziest part is that he didn't even need real admin credentials. Microsoft's internal API never verified JWT signatures, letting him forge an authentication token. After getting past its other checks, changing the username field to "admin" gave him administrator-level access lmao.

to be clear, the 17.3 trillion figure refers to estimated rows potentially accessible across 17 analytics databases, not records he downloaded. He reported the vulnerability to Microsoft, and the reward? just $5,000.

holy crap, how does something like this make it into production tho?

PS: the 17 trillion users records i wrote in the title is wrong, the article only says db records

How We Found Thousands of Exposed NVIDIA GPUs and a Way to Disrupt Them (CVE-2026-47483)

Thumbnail
lava.security
105 Upvotes

TL;DR: NVIDIA DCGM Exporter is a widely used monitoring tool that collects GPU metrics like utilization, memory, temperature, and power consumption from AI servers.
We discovered that thousands of these monitoring endpoints are exposed to the public internet, allowing anyone to inspect GPU infrastructure. Worse, we found a high-severity vulnerability (CVE-2026-47483, CVSS 8.2) that lets unauthenticated attackers exhaust server resources, crash GPU monitoring, and potentially disrupt AI workloads remotely.
A few other interesting findings:
2,100+ exposed GPU servers, revealing telemetry from 12,000+ GPUs worth ~$100M, including H100s, H200s, and Blackwell GPUs.
60% of exposed GPUs reported 0% utilization across our scans.
12,096 additional servers exposed infrastructure details, including OS, firmware, and networking information.
NVIDIA fixed the vulnerability following our responsible disclosure.

Hi Hacking Community,

I’ve got a laptop that I’m trying to flash the BIOS and clear the old password out but I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong with the WSON8 pogo pins. Do you have any advice or suggestions for me to try? Every time I dump the ROM, there is a hash mismatch.
