Work Continuous security validation turned into a SOC incident
We had a validation run recently that did exactly what it was supposed to do technically and still created a mess operationally. The attack behavior landed, detections fired, and the SIEM picked everything up. The problem was that the SOC had no idea it was a test. One alert escalated like a real incident, and people started trying to work out whether we had an actual problem or someone had kicked off validation without telling.
I don't want to tone down the scenarios so much that they stop proving anything. But if every validation run can trigger paging, case creation, escalation and half the analyst workflow, people will start not to trust the test traffic.
Our team have been comparing Cymulate with SafeBreach and Picus for recurring validation, and now Im paying more attention to how controlled the runs, how clearly test activity is identified, and whether the SOC can tell what is expected without having to investigate it from scratch.
Before making the routine, I want to know the test accounts and assets, agreed windows and clear SOC notification, tags that make it all the way into the SIEM, an emergency stop if something behaves differently than expected, and a way to separate a detection firing from someone actually needing to be paged.
How are teams keeping these runs realistic without making the SOC second guess every alert that comes in during testing?
Does anyone go through these issues if does what are the possiblities that can solve these issues or does anyone have use the tools that i mention would love to hear the suggestions.
