Kudos to a Driver

Someone else will definitely have seen this but there was a wee act of heroism I think needs congratulated.

Some poor girl fell on the tracks at Cowcaddens around ten to 4 today and the drivers reaction time has probably saved her life. The train coming towards her was stopped a third of the way up the platform with only a few feet left to spare.

The drivers of both trains and station staff were admirable in their effort and quickness. I can only hope the girl is ok and while probably has some injuries at least has her life.

Does anyone remember a free preview screening of Donnie Darko at the GFT around 2001?

With the 25th anniversary of Donnie Darko (2001) coming up, I've been reminded of an experience I've been trying to pin down.

I saw the film at the Glasgow Film Theatre well before its official UK cinema release in October 2002. My recollection is that it was possibly early 2001, although I could be mistaken about the date.

I was given free tickets by a marketer on the street on my way to work. This was back when I was still an age that marketers cared about as a demographic! I'm fairly sure it was a test audience screening to gauge how the film might perform in the UK market, as I have a vague recollection of being given a survey to complete afterwards.

I remember it seeming like a very long time before the film received its proper cinema release. I've tried using the Wayback Machine to see if there was any evidence of the screening on the archived GFT website, but unfortunately couldn't find anything.

Does anyone else remember attending an early test screening of Donnie Darko at the GFT, or remember companies handing out free cinema preview tickets in Glasgow around that time?

I'd love to establish roughly when it happened, even if it's just to confirm that someone else remembers it!

I visited Polmadie 150, Alstom's Glasgow Traincare Centre open day

On Sunday, 12 October 2025, I attended Polmadie 150, the open day held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alstom's Glasgow Traincare Centre, better known as Polmadie depot. The event marked the first time the depot had been opened to the public in 25 years and formed part of the wider Railway 200 celebrations.

The day before the open day, I travelled to Glasgow on the Branch Line Society railtour, To the Birthplace and the Backbone, which was operated by a preserved InterCity 125 set comprising 125 Group Mark 3 coaches hauled by RailAdventure Class 43 power cars 43468 and 43484. I boarded the train inside Alstom's Litchurch Lane Works in Derby, where the railtour originated, and returned there at the conclusion of the tour. This provided a rare opportunity to both board and alight from a special train within Britain's last remaining train manufacturing factory. The railtour linked Alstom's Derby Litchurch Lane Works with Polmadie, celebrating two sites with significant links to Britain's railway heritage.

The railtour was the first passenger train ever to enter Polmadie depot. During our visit, the train traversed a number of depot lines and was hauled around parts of the site by Polmadie's resident Class 08 shunting locomotives 08451, 08696 and 08954, providing rare passenger access to areas not normally accessible to the public.

Originally opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1875, Polmadie is one of Scotland's most important railway maintenance facilities. Located just south-east of Glasgow Central station on the West Coast Main Line, it is the principal maintenance base for the Caledonian Sleeper fleet and also regularly handles Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino units.

The open day featured a wide selection of rolling stock from both the passenger and freight sectors. Displays included Avanti West Coast Pendolino 390119 Progress, ScotRail Class 334 unit 334034, Caledonian Sleeper Mark 5 coaches, Freightliner Class 90 locomotives 90018 The Greatest Gathering and 90021 Donald Malcolm, GB Railfreight locomotives 66710 Karen Harrison, 73968, 92023 Polmadie 150 1875-2025 and Stadler-built Class 99 locomotive 99001, Rail Operations Group Class 93 locomotive 93006, examples of the depot's Class 08 shunters, preserved Class 37 locomotive 37403 Isle of Mull from the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, Network Rail Unimog U 430 road-rail vehicles and Caledonian Railway No. 419, the oldest exhibit present at the event.

Visitors were able to explore several exhibits in detail. I took the opportunity to sit in the cabs of Freightliner Class 90 locomotive 90018 The Greatest Gathering and Stadler-built Class 99 locomotive 99001. We were also able to look inside Caledonian Sleeper Mark 5 coaches and view the accommodation provided on the overnight services linking Scotland with London.

In addition to the rolling stock displays, visitors were able to view parts of the depot and learn more about the maintenance, servicing and operation of modern railway fleets. There were also heritage exhibits reflecting Polmadie's long history and its role in supporting railway operations in Scotland and along the West Coast Main Line.

Here are some photographs I took during the railtour and at the Polmadie 150 open day.

Did anyone do the Obama meet and greet at the Hydro last night?

Curious to hear what it was like, if you had time to engage with him or if it was a conveyor belt of hellos and hand shakes?

Large flying thing passing over Partick / Thornwood

Did anyone see a large drone type thing with a constant red light on one wing and green light on the other wing fly over the west end of Glasgow at the back of 8pm this evening? It was flying about twice the height of the tenement and made a very small noise, which is what drew attention to it in the first instance. Very strange object. It was certainly not a hobbyist or filming drone. It was 8ft or so in length.

Who were those ppl pitched up by the concert hall today??

Didn't catch a picture but there were people on Buchanan steps who were promoting... Something?

Poster that said it was now 'outlawed' to report crime to the police

A sign saying STOP THE LIES

A cartoony banner of pictures of crying children in dark rooms

I talked to one of the guys who were promoting.... The Thing. I asked him what their organisations mission was. He just said "TRUTH. AWARENESS" I said that was too abstract and asked him what they actually want to make happen in the city. He just repeated some abstract nouns. Who are they? Felt cultish and weird.

Cross stitch in Glasgow?

I’ve been an avid cross stitcher for several years now, but haven’t met many people here that enjoy this hobby too. I am thinking of arranging a monthly cross stitch social / stitch-along in the Southside. and wondered if this is something folk would be interested in?

Video recording cars

What are these driving round town? Seen a Jaaaag & a Mercedes with the camera on the roof, subtle "video recording" on the rear. Ive seen the Google car before and it was pretty clear what it was but these are plain white for the most part.

Does anyone remember Nerve? (band search)

Does anyone remember the band, Nerve , from the Glasgow area?

I don’t know much about them but have had one of their songs stuck in my head for the better part of 15 years or so. I saw them live once (I think) and know they rehearsed at Berkeley 2 for a while around 2010-ish.

The lyric that’s stuck in my head is “Time and time again you break my heart, the more that we’re together, the more we fall apart…”. Groundbreaking stuff but it’s stuck in my head for some reason and I need to listen to the full track again to scratch that itch.

Anyone help?

Seeking allergy doctors in the area

• Upvotes

Wondering if any recommendations for a doctor who can help with allergy testing / (maybe even testing for conditions like mcas?).

GP tells me there are no adult allergy doctors on nhs in greater Glasgow area. My symptoms are pretty extreme dont want to go into the gory details but at the point of disrupting sleep, work, seeing pals etc. GP said in Glasgow, adults can only see allergy doctor if Ive had anapalaxis and the doctor who does that isnt in the area? I had this on holiday but my treatment was free on their version of nhs, so no letters from health insurance and wasnt even in Europe. It was so scary and I want to take whatever action I can before something like that happens again. My prescription is H1 and H2 antihistamines, it does work, but like, 50% if that makes sense and been told its the strongest a GP can give.

Have any of you been in a situation like mine and been able to access nhs help?

Any private doctor recommendations? Up to 2 hour drive from Glasgow is fine.

Any holistic or spiritual ideas or lifestyle change ideas are very welcome as well. Feel free to suggest me anywhere in the area but only if you tried it yourself please. (So far I tried eating local honey, visiting Fatima, cutting out white sugar, turmeric, vit D, moringa tea, keto diet)

Sorry for long post and thanks in advance

Sugo pasta recipe

To all the Sugo Pasta lovers out there, basically I'm trying to replicate the no.4 pasta from Sugo with the missus as a date night kind of idea since we both love it. If anyone has cooking experience (Or worked there or still works there who knows) can tell me what yous think (only putting this in r/Glasgow because they're only in Glasgow), trying to make something as close to theirs as possible.

This is about all I've got so far;

  1. Tagliatelle with mushrooms in brown butter with fresh sage and Grana Padano (Tuscany)

• 500 g fresh egg tagliatelle

• 45 g dried porcini mushrooms

• 125 g unsalted butter

• 16–20 fresh sage leaves

• 60 g Grana Padano PDO

• 300 ml hot water for soaking

• 10 g salt per litre of pasta water

• ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

• 250 ml reserved pasta cooking water

Thanks 😄

Possibly homeless in Glasgow. Any advice. I might have to go to council as parents making me leave. I've heard bad things about hotels and how long people stay there, worried. Any recent experiences? timelines from hotel to temp flat to perm? Also a adult full-time student and been told I wont be able to get housing benefit so I'll have to pay out of pocket.

Going to a Pub alone

Hi!
I just moved to Glasgow and am unaware of the pub culture here. I’m a football fan and haven’t made any friends that like football too. I can’t stream the the Champions League, so would it be weird of me to go alone to a pub, have a drink and watch the game? Is that frowned upon? Maybe with my computer?
Thank you
Update: yes i got it, i’ll go without my laptop. i’m a girl so i reckon most if not all people will be men so i doubt anyone will talk to me but i’m still going! thank you for the advice!
