- Jon and Ashifa

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi r/geopolitics, we are Jon Henley, the Guardian’s Europe correspondent, and Ashifa Kassam, European community affairs correspondent.

Support for far-right parties has been growing across Europe, with radical right, populist parties in coalition governments in Croatia, Czechia, Italy and Finland, and leading in the polls in Austria, Belgium, France and Germany.

The Guardian reported this year that nearly a quarter of voters in Europe voted for far-right parties in their most recent national elections, a fivefold increase since 1995.

In Germany, Alternative für Deutschland recently booked a historic state election victory in Saxony-Anhalt. Elsewhere, though - in the Netherlands, in Hungary and in Sweden, where the Sweden Democrats lost vote share - far-right parties have suffered defeats.

But their ideas - and their influence on mainstream politics - are today clearly visible across the continent, notably on policies around immigration and law-and-order.

The coming months will see further crucial elections, beginning in Spain in November and continuing in France, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Slovakia, Poland and Italy next year.

With support for far-right politics now well-established across Europe, how might these elections shape the political future of the continent? What is the impact of their policies - and what might prevent their continuing rise?

We’ll be here on Wednesday 14 October at 10am EDT/ 3pm BST/ 4pm CEST to answer your questions live. Drop your questions below!

A little bit about the European correspondents and their work…

Jon Henley has been writing about politics and more in Europe for over 30 years and has reported for the Guardian from 23 of the EU’s 27 member states. After stints in Amsterdam, Brussels and Helsinki, he was for a decade the Guardian’s chief correspondent in Paris, where he is now based as its Europe correspondent.

Ashifa Kassam lives in Madrid and has spent 12 years meeting and reporting on people, communities and movements for the Guardian. Her reporting often focuses on those most impacted by the far-right, including women, migrants and minority communities; most recently she was on the ground in Sweden and Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state to speak with people ahead of the elections.

AMA Technology is reshaping the global balance of power. I’m Steve Feldstein, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, and I study technology, geopolitics, and competition. Ask me anything!

Hey r/geopolitics — I’m Steve Feldstein, an expert on technology, democracy, and national security, and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

My new book, Bytes and Bullets: Global Rivalries, Big Tech, and the New Shape of Modern Warfare, explores how technology is altering the global balance of power and changing the way wars are fought—from defense-tech startups in Silicon Valley at the forefront of U.S.-China competition, to 3D-printing drone labs in Syria that helped topple a dictator.

Ask me anything about geopolitical competition in the digital age, the intermingling of private and military tech, the broadening tech war between the U.S. and China, tech export controls, and the rise of middle powers and non-state actors in this space.

I’ll be answering questions from Thursday, October 1, 9am ET to Friday, October 2, 12pm ET. Looking forward!

Mounting concern in Australia over UK ability to deliver SSN-AUKUS

SS:

While visiting UK officials..assured Australian audiences that the SSN-AUKUS program is on track, a common-sense, empirical examination of Royal Navy operational deployment data reveals it to be running perilously close to complete shutdown.

Operating on the absolute edge..The core of the crisis lies in the collapse of the UK’s submarine enterprise force generation. The ageing Vanguard-class deterrent fleet now appears to consume virtually all available industrial bandwidth..

Skill fade, recycled command, and the escort vacuum..With in-service SSNs immobilised..availability has effectively dropped to zero. This..has broken the training and qualification pipeline..

Preliminary Design Review(PDR) marks the formal end of Concept/Assessment..was scheduled for September 2026. Yet, recent statements in Australia..reframing slips as “taking time to design the right submarine”..without a new date.

Russian assets frozen in the West will be returned to Moscow "over our dead bodies", Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said at the Warsaw Security Forum on Tuesday, as European ministers vowed to stand firm against Russia.

More than €210 billion in Russian central bank assets are frozen in the EU, with European governments debating how to use the money to support Ukraine without breaching international law.

The bloc has so far used profits generated by the frozen assets to help fund Ukrainian military support and loans.
