Forza PC 2 Days Later… Forza Motorsport 4 Is Already Running Natively on PC — Recompilation WIP

After working on my previous Forza Motorsport 2 and Forza Motorsport 3 recompilation projects, I’ve started bringing Forza Motorsport 4 to PC using static recompilation.
Here is the first work-in-progress video:

This is not a public release yet. The video is an early technical preview showing the current state of the project.
To follow development, you can find me on X: https://x.com/herculabs
What is this?
The original Xbox 360 PowerPC executable is statically recompiled into native C++ and connected to a PC-compatible runtime through the ReXGlue SDK.
The runtime recreates the Xbox 360 services required by the game, including graphics, audio, input, filesystem access, profiles and content management. The game’s CPU code is compiled ahead of time instead of being interpreted while running.
What currently works?
The project already boots and runs gameplay, with support for:
- Named local profiles with separate save directories
- Xbox and other compatible controllers
- Remappable keyboard controls
- Optional mouse input for the camera
- Installation of the additional content from Disc 2
- Language selection using the original game’s supported languages
The graphics options currently include:
- Internal resolution scaling up to 4×
- Anisotropic filtering
- FXAA
- AMD FSR and CAS upscaling
- Windowed and fullscreen modes
- A 16:9 aspect-ratio option
- Direct3D 12 rendering
Compatibility testing is still ongoing, so this does not mean every mode or configuration has been fully validated.
Custom launcher
The project includes its own launcher, adapted from my FM3 project and available in English and Spanish.
It can:
- Automatically identify the Play Disc and Content Install Disc
- Extract and verify the Play Disc files using SHA-256
- Install the four additional content packages from Disc 2
- Create, select and remove local profiles
- Configure graphics, controls, audio and language
- Verify an existing installation
- Launch the game
It also includes a reversible workaround for the square shadows seen during races. This skips certain exterior shadow maps while retaining cockpit shadows; it is a workaround rather than a complete rendering fix.
An experimental asynchronous shader option is available for testing whether it reduces compilation-related pauses. It can cause some objects or effects to appear late while shaders are being prepared.
Current state
This is still an early work in progress.
The game is running, and the latest changes appear to have improved the experience, but several areas still need testing and polish:
- Intermittent stutter and frame pacing
- Shader compilation behaviour
- Incorrect shadows and other graphical effects
- Audio compatibility across different systems
- Career progression and save behaviour
- Less common modes and local multiplayer
The runtime already caches shaders and prepares previously encountered pipelines at startup, but that does not eliminate every source of stutter.
Xbox Live and online multiplayer are not available.
There is currently no release date. I want to continue testing and addressing the main issues before publishing a first build.
Game requirements
No copyrighted game files will be included with the project.
The recompilation currently targets:
Forza Motorsport 4 for Xbox 360 — USA, Rev 1
Both discs are required for the complete installation:
- Disc 1 — Play Disc
- Disc 2 — Content Install Disc
Other regions or revisions may contain different executables and are not currently supported.
You will need to provide your own original game files.
Credits
This project is built with the ReXGlue SDK and benefits from the research and engineering work of the Xenia and XenonRecomp communities.
The race-shadow workaround is based on findings shared by the Xenia community.
This is an independent fan project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with Microsoft, Xbox or Turn 10 Studios.
I’ll share more progress as development continues. Feedback on the footage is welcome, especially if you notice graphical, audio or timing issues.
Thanks for watching!
