Curious about datacenters? Follow these rules!

We understand there's a lot of people curious about new datacenter construction. You're welcome to ask questions here, but you must follow these rules or your post will be removed:

  1. Ask questions in good faith. If your mind is already made up or you advocate NIMBYism for the sake of NIMBYism, your post will be removed.
  2. Respect those answering. We have a broad community of datacenter professionals, many highly experienced and/or highly paid, who are answering your questions for free.
  3. Don't argue. This is not a debate forum; if you don't like the answers you receive, please take your complaints elsewhere.

Our normal rules also still apply: https://www.reddit.com/mod/datacenter/rules/ (no spam, no self promotion, no asking how to build a datacenter, etc.)

Where to go from here?

Hey guys, would love some career advice.

28 year old in the DFW Area as a Data Center Technician clearing a little over $100k+ currently. I feel that I am now at a dead end path and don’t wan’t to pursue management at a Data Center and feel I am just bored at this time. I would love some advice on where I can go from here to continue growing and do more than just general break-fix and running fiber and answering tickets. I have a degree in an unrelated field as well and am open to returning to school if need be. Honestly open to anything that seems engaging and helps me continue to learn and grow.

What would you say is the best company to work for in the Midwest for data centers.

I know there are numerous companies but if I plan to move to Chicago I want to know if equinix is a good option.

I might most likely work at Equinix CH1

Is this a good certificate to get for DCT apprenticeship?

I was thinking of doing the Official Cisco CCST Networking exam as a way to make me stand out during the application process I currently work at a switchgear company as an engineering fitter apprentice where we install and assemble many different switch boards, panel boards, LV switch boards etc which already ties into data centre’s but I just want to gain more knowledge. Please lmk if it’s a good certificate to get and if there are any better suited ones

Community College for “data center technician” certificate?

Hey all, I recently graduated high school, went into community college for something else, ended up not liking it and quickly dropped the classes. Now i’m looking at what’s next, but I realized my local community college has a 2 semester certificate program for DCT, anybody have experience with programs like this? Is it even remotely worth it or get me anything close to a DCT job? Thanks!

Culture of Google Data Center during Construction

I see a lot of reviews on culture from data center technicians, but what about the roles on site at data centers that work / oversee the general contractors building the data centers. How is the Google culture in that regard, same work life balance and great perks?

Fluidstack Software Engineer Interview Loop

I've got a recruiter screen coming up with Fluidstack for a software engineer role on the facilities side. I'm coming from a SCADA/controls background, so this would be my move into a full software role.
I've seen plenty of posts about the workload and long hours. Honestly that doesn't scare me, I'm more trying to figure out how to prep.
For anyone who's interviewed there for a software role:
• What rounds did you have after the recruiter screen?
• Was there live coding (LeetCode style) or was it more system design / experience deep dives?
• Any questions or topics that stood out?
Anything helps. Thanks.

Disconnect between Data Center hiring and applicants

First post here. Saw a statistic from Uptime Institute saying the following:

53% of data center operators say they cannot find qualified candidates for open roles.

That number smells a bit off to me, but I'm curious if people here had any insight. Do you think it's just that people don't want to fill open roles because the salary is too low? Or there's a desire for expertise handing complicated AI hardware that people have less experience with?

Would love any insights that people have on this, first-hand or otherwise. I'd link the research, but it's downloadable media that I don't think I can redistribute. It's from the 2026 Global Data Center Survey. Thanks!

CET position Microsoft

Hello all,

I just recently received my offer from Microsoft for a CET position. I’m completing my background check and all right now, but what can I expect on my first few weeks in this role? I know I have an orientation to do, but is there a lot of training courses to do? Will I be shadowing someone?

Anything is greatly appreciated!

Suggestion : building data centers in the Sahara

I was just having a shower, and got this shower thought.

Why don't they build data centers in the Sahara ?

As someone from the Sahara, a very very huge vast desert in northern Africa, this sounded like a good idea to me, two birds with one stone.

1) There are barely any animals or plants there, or at least, relatively way less than in Europe or the USA.

2) Basically free land (dirt cheap).

3) Free energy (solar).

4) Cheap labor (this will help with the local high unemployment rates).

5) AND most importantly you get to benefit the local economies.

However :

1) Corruption might be a big obstacle.

2) Security too

3) High temperatures, but air conditioning can fix that.

The fixed-silicon problem: why server BMCs need to stop shipping frozen

Sharing a write-up for anyone working on server management, data-center hardware, or OpenBMC.

The core argument: the BMC (baseboard management controller) in most servers is fixed-function silicon — its capabilities are locked at tape-out. But everything it’s responsible for keeps moving: security requirements, attestation standards, telemetry needs, manageability features. When the controller is hardwired, closing any gap means waiting for the next hardware generation and a full refresh cycle.

A few points the article gets into:

  • Why management keeps evolving — new threats, compliance mandates, and workload demands that outpace fixed hardware
  • The cost of frozen silicon — security patches that can’t reach the hardware layer, features that require a board respin
  • The case for reconfigurability — FPGA/soft-logic approaches that let the management plane update like software, after deployment

It’s framed as Part 1 of a series (the reconfigurable-BMC angle presumably comes in later parts), and it’s vendor-authored (Logic Fruit, tied to their L-Nex module), so there’s product context — but the underlying problem statement is legitimate and worth discussing.

Link: https://www.logic-fruit.com/blogs/inside-l-nex-part-1-the-fixed-silicon-problem-why-server-management-must-keep-evolving

Curious what folks here think — for those running OpenBMC or building server platforms: is fixed BMC silicon actually a pain point for you, or do firmware updates cover enough of the gap in practice? Where does hardware-level reconfigurability actually earn its keep vs. add complexity?

Hello all, I am currently a datacenter tech working under contract and was wondering about switching to another company. What do you consider to be the best company to work for in your opinion and what benefits do they have that others don’t?

Career changer

GREETINGS. I'm looking to change careers into becoming a data center technician. I have 23 years of supply chain warehouse operations. I have experience in voice picking, transport logistics, dock operations, freight onloading & off loading, etc. I have been trying to get into IT for the past 3 years now. I went thru an AWS re/start bootcamp, self-taught Microsoft IAM, and Red Hat RHCSA. Then I completed an Oracle DBA bootcamp. No one is hiring. I discovered recently that both Google and Oracle are building Datacenters in my area, and I would love to work for one of them. Any advice on my experience so far? I'm studying for CompTia Server+ in the meantime before the datacenters open up, (mid and late 2027).
