How much does Microsoft pays for Senior Data Center Technician?
Hey guys, I work at Google as a Data Center Technician. Previously, worked at AWS. Total data center experience around 3 years plus prior 1 year IT experience with a Bachelor's degree.
Currently, I make around $132k tc at Google. I am thinking about going at Microsoft. I am super interested in their compensation package for a Senior Data Center Technician and what's it's like working there. Thank you!

Based on location, anywhere from 45-55 hourly. It can add up to 125k-140k per year on base only(for me base i consider the mandatory OT and any night premium), + other stock, bonus, benefits.

Its a sliding scale based on region. If the DC is near a metro like SF or NY or DC the pay is higher. Im not in any of those but our scale is built off of northern VA. My sdct tc is 156k and a never ending supply of OT. Our site has the most simops in the entire fleet. Meaning we have deployments, decommissions, upgrades, contruction, retrofits

Curious why you want to jump? I was at Microsoft doing PM level projects and managing 5-10 vendor groups at once as a regular DCT…all the seniors went to me for help. With that said, they didn’t get paid much more than me and you make way more now trust me. MS sux nobody knows what they’re doing except 2 or 3 people none of which are higher ups.

Seems like I am with the wrong company. As a data center technician level two, with five years of experience, making nowhere near that.

L2 at Google is ~80K base in a discount area, a little higher in a larger metro.

I've got 6 certs. Not much Linux. In fact, they did not ask me any Linux. I told them I know the basics so they just skipped Linux part.

Hey so I am in the final steps in getting into Google. I wanted to see if you can DM me to give me more information regarding the position as I applied for a data center technician level three. I currently live in Mesa, Arizona, and that is the location for where I applied for.

Microsoft cloud employees refer to their data center technicians as “meat proxies” I don’t think many low level technician will have a job there for 10+ years

Damn, that’s pretty good pay. I always hear go AWS first to get your foot in the door, then move over to Google or Microsoft. I’m sure it’s harder than it sounds but it’s nice to see a solid path to follow. You live in a HCOL area I assume?

I've referred some of the best data techs from AwS over the past few weeks. Most got rejected before even any interview. Only one of my refer got hired. It's not too bad. I am getting $4k.

Show your competence through projects and post them regularly on LinkedIn. Try to find someone already working in company you want to get in. Their referral and help with interview can get you in. Pay $100 for each hour they help, it can be worth it.

$132k at Google with three years in, that's a good setup. I know a couple people who jumped to Microsoft and the base was pretty similar but the stock refreshers and bonus structure felt different, more steady than the front-loaded RSUs some other places do.
The real shift is the pace, Google's tooling is its own universe and Microsoft's is very much the other side of the coin. If you're bored and want a change of scenery it's worth the interview just to see the numbers they throw at you.
