Guide How To Protect Yourself From the Hacker in Anor Londo

EDIT: Added a comment below the post briefly discussing Cheat Engine and how it could be used as a pseudo method of restoring lost progress for anyone who didn’t have a backup save. The caveat might be that you can’t play online anymore after using it so double check me on that before deciding (I’ve not personally used it).

EDIT2: Thanks for the sticky! Any questions about the PvP Overhaul Mod should be asked on it's Nexus page. I personally don't mod the DS games so I have absolutely no idea what will or won't get you banned. Perform your due diligence! :)

Long story short, some doofus is ruining people's games by instantly killing Gwyndolin and any other NPCs in Anor Londo (blacksmiths, Solaire, etc). I believe this is only occurring on PC.

I've messaged the Mods requesting a stickied thread be made warning players of this and how they can protect themselves but in the meantime, I can make a thread myself that will at least get eyes on for like......today? lol

Does This Mean I Can't Play Online?

No.

You can absolutely still invade and be summoned for Co-Op to your heart's content. But it's important to be aware of the danger that's currently plaguing (seemingly specifically) Anor Londo and of the steps you can take to mitigate its impact on your experience.

This first tip is the BEST way to defend yourself, bar none.

1. Back Up Your Save

Backing up your save is the difference between a hacker mildly inconveniencing you, and soul-crushing devastation that you'll literally need a day or two to recover from before deciding to even play again.

If a hacker ruins your game by killing NPCs or an unfortunate glitch has softlocked you or any other disaster befalls your play session, simply deleting that save and restoring a recently made backup can solve those woes immediately.

Here's how to do it (PC)

  • Make sure the game isn't running whatsoever (later games allow you to remain on the title screen but not DSR)
  • Navigate to your Documents folder
  • Open the NGBI folder
  • Open the folder labeled DARK SOULS REMASTERED
  • Open the next folder (it'll be a folder labeled as a sequence of numbers)
  • The DRAKS0005.sl2 file is the save file
  • Copy it
  • Create a new folder for your saves anywhere else on your computer and paste the .sl2 file you just copied into it
  • You've now made a backup of your save!

So let's say you get hacked and the Gwyndolin cutscene immediately plays and every NPC in Anor Londo dies. To restore your backup, you'll just delete the .sl2 file containing the "corrupted" game save and replace it with the copy you made earlier.

It's advised that you don't just paste and replace the .sl2 file when restoring your backups. Actually delete the compromised .sl2 file first.

This is just to protect yourself from any mistakes you might make as deleted .sl2 files can be recovered later. If you just paste and replace, the replaced file will be gone for good.

I recommend making a new backup after each hour of play to minimize the effects of a hacker or other form of corruption. That way if it happens, it won't be a big deal.

NOTE: The DRAK file contains all of your data for all of your characters. Backing up this file will back up ALL of your saved characters.

2. Download the PvP Overhaul Mod

Full disclosure, I've not used this mod whatsoever as I don't often PvP, but word on the street in the wake of this string of hacks in Anor Londo is that it'll help prevent those hacks with it's own slew of anti-cheat and netcode improvements.

Understand though that these things are never foolproof and that backing up your save is still the BEST defense against hackers or other forms of corruption.

Hopefully this helps. Feel free to comment below if you have any other tips for preventive measures!

Discussion Dark Souls: Prepare to Co-op Edition - free mod for the original Dark Souls

Post image
381 Upvotes

After releasing the first Dark Souls 1 FPS Unlock mod (for Remastered and Prepare to Die Edition) that completely fixes all physics bugs at high FPS, I'm releasing a brand new mod today: the Prepare to Co-op Edition.

This mod brings the features of Seamless co-op for Remastered to the original game (up to 4 total players)

If you only have or prefer Remastered, I recommend my FPS Unlock mod which also goes great with Seamless Co-op by Yui - FPS Unlock for Remastered/PTDE

But, if you're a big fan of the original game, you may have felt sad that there was no co-op mod for the original game. I did too, which is why I created the Prepare to Co-op Edition. Download the Prepare to Co-op Edition here!

My mods are all open source on my GitHub

Contributions or issues are welcomed.

Thank you and enjoy the mod!

Discussion Playing through this finally, 15 years late, a blind run

I jumped in the game again, the first time was a few years back, I liked what I saw, but hit a wall due to a lack of skill and decided to move on to another game and come back... but never did. Well... that day is here now, I've rung 2 bells and am chugging along, I did ask some help here jumping into other threads but eventually decided to just go in blind and build blind. It's been awesome, and I can see I missed out. I'm playing Switch Remastered version but after this I might jump into Elden Ring or DS2 on steam. Either way... I can't stop thinking about the damn game even at work.

Discussion I finally got a black knight weapon!

After murdering countless black knights, I finally managed to get a black knight sword. It's even at the start of the game.

And in a game when I have a strength build.

Help Is it a bad idea to speedrun a new game to rush NG+ and the sunlight spear ?

• Upvotes

I wanna play with lightning spears but I see the sunlight spear requires ng+.

So I figured I could speedrun the lordvessel then do the kiln wrong warp to rush Gwyn.

But then that means I enter NG+ at like SL10, would that be a problem ? I don't wanna get one shot by everything.

7 months ago I beat Dark Souls Remastered for the first time and I made this post:(https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/1rq61fx/i_finally_did_it_i_beat_ds_remastered_on_my_first/) TL;DR - It was my first soulslike and while the lore and world captivated me, the gameplay didn't, it was miserable for me, especially the runbacks. Since then I beat Elden Ring (no DLC) and played a decent chunk of DS3. This game popped in my head and something made me play it again, from scratch. I made a character and began my journey. This time it was totally different, it's like muscle memory kicked in, remembered patterns, shortcuts, the game felt...easier? Like I still died a lot of course but I feel like I was flowing with the game instead of struggling against the current. First time it took me 30.1 hours to beat without touching the DLC. This time I beat it in 14.4 hours and some of the DLC (beat Artorias and saved Sif, Manus and Kalameet were skipped). I get it now guys, this game is a masterpiece and I am glad I gave it another chance, I really enjoyed it (the runbacks can still go fuck themselves, Bed of Chaos too).

Discussion I lost the ability to warp in the DLC (Possible New Glitch)

Hello all, I'm currently in the DLC after placing the lord vessel and getting the ability to warp. I completed the whole DLC and now lost the ability to warp out somehow. For more context I'm running a giant dad build and was invading players when it happened.

What I see at every Bonfire
Me stuck for eternity at the Manus Bonfire, I was able to warp out the first time I beat him
Shows I had to have had the Lord Vessel

Question Is the Claymore a good weapon to make it through the end game with?

• Upvotes

First time playing Dark Souls. My husband told me that the Claymore is very popular but he himself doesn't like it. I found it in the game yesterday and tried it out. It's a bit slower than my usual choice of weapon in one of these types of games but I do enjoy it still.

I'm considering dumping all of my titanite shards into it and focusing on getting it to max level but I want to make sure it's a viable option for endgame first. That's all.

Question Why me suck :C

I keep dying! In the bosses, in the runbacks, in the exploration.

I practice on enemies, yippie. I easily kill them.

until that is, I do not. and that is sad. for I died more to the rats poison than the boar, just to sneak past said pig anyway.

The gargoyles are making me headbutt walls.

but they're runbacks are apparently not even the worst ones :C I too dumb for this game.

:C

Edit:

My dodges are so bad I've opted for burnt naked guy

Discussion Patches reference in DS2?

I've had this theory ever since I first played Dark Souls 2, and I'm curious if anyone else has ever made the same connection. As we all know, Patches is noticeably absent from DS2, despite appearing throughout the Souls series. One of his most recognizable traits is his hatred of clerics and his tendency to trick people into falling off cliffs or down into pits. Now, think about the beginning of Dark Souls 2. Almost immediately upon reaching Majula, you can find a corpse on a ledge below a cliff carrying a Morning Star and a Cleric's Sacred Chime, both associated with clerics. The moment I discovered those items on my first playthrough, my mind immediately went to Patches.

I think this could be FromSoftware's subtle way of referencing him. A dead cleric at the bottom of a cliff, in the one Dark Souls game where Patches is missing, feels like a pretty specific coincidence. I'm not suggesting Patches canonically visited Drangleic, but I wouldn't be surprised if the developers deliberately placed those items there as a little nod to him. I've searched around and haven't found anyone discussing this exact connection. Has anyone else ever thought about this?

Discussion I finally understand why people love the Claymore in this game so much.

Post image
584 Upvotes

I am doing a replay of all the FromSoft RPGs, starting with Demons Souls Remake and now on DS 1 remastered and decided to try the claymore. In the over a decade that I have loved this game, I always saw people love this weapon and honestly I just shrugged my shoulders because I didn't see why it would be so popular, but now that I actually am using it and this thing rips, the speed, feeling and moveset are all perfect and this might be my new favorite weapon in this game. So I understand you guys now, you were so right.

Discussion I beat Dark Souls for the first time ever last night.

I purchased the game on Xbox 360 in late 2012 on deep discount. I probably played it for about an hour before I gave up. I attacked the guy sitting by Firelink that you first talk to but I was too underpowered to beat him. He’d just kill me and I’d spawn back just to have him chase me around the map until he caught and killed me.

Fuck that game.

A few weeks ago my 15yo son expressed interest in the game. He played that same copy of DS on our Series X using back compat. I watched him play and became interested in my own run, so I bought the game on sale, DS Remasters on PS5. I looked up a few build guides and tips before playing and then embarked on the journey.

I ended up doing a build centered around Zweihander two handed along with Giants Armor, both eventually fully maxed out. I would say the first 20 hours of the game were pretty challenging and I died quite often, but when I finally got to Anor Londo I probably just farmed that area before fighting O&S for like 5-6 hours. I fucked up and I over leveled my character and the rest of the game was easy. One shooting most enemies, strong enough to stand and trade with bosses.

I’m glad I beat the game, but I wish I didn’t focus on leveling up my character to the point that it stopped being tough.

Great game 10/10 tho and I’m glad I gave it another shot. On to Demon’s Souls next lol.

Discussion As a total newb stumbling through for the first time, I have so many thoughts and questions.

That intro made no sense, what is my character doing here? What's their motivation? I don't understand the objective.

Started out as a thief, but the drake sword and now the zweihander i found in the graveyard seem to be a MUCH better time than little back-stabby knives. (Are stabby classes even viable in this game against some of these huge enemies?) Should I restart with a different class? (Also, how much endurance is enough for big oversized two-handers?)

Rang the first bell but there seem to be too many places to go now. Getting torn up by ghosts in New Londo, where tf do I go? (Seriously, F these ghosts!)

Level 30, reversed hollowing to kindle a bonfire then some guy invaded and destroyed me with almost seemed like a...whip? (I was a strike away from killing them but endurance was too low to finish them fast enough before yhey took a drink) What's the use of playing online or reversing hollowing besides kindling?

I die way too often for it to seem worth it to use what little humanity I find for anything other than kindling a flame. What's this stuff good for other than that? Why can't I invade games? Why can't I get people to join mine? I can only help other players if I use humanity, but I don't get credit in my world for killing the boss.😕 Just... more humanity... The wait to join a game doesn't seem worth it.

Edit: Thanks to those leaving helpful comments and not just snarky ones.

Also, to those downvoting helpful comments. Is your soul made of excrement?

Help Definitely feeling discouraged

I recently bought Dark Souls 1, it's my first souls game. I've heard this is such a great game series and so far I do agree that it is fun! I want to keep playing

However I do not enjoy feeling like I'm not getting anywhere

I'm literally in the first section of the game and I've spent hours now just getting my ass kicked.

I understand that it's the point of the game and get better. I know all that

I just want to vent frustration cause this is genuinely a kick in the nuts. Was it this tough for all of you?

Discussion Me pasé Ds1-2 y 3...

Discussion Why is Dark Souls your favorite in the trilogy?

I'm always hearing so many mixed opinions on these games, but I wanna ask this question for each game (in their respective communities): What exactly about this game makes it your personal favorite of the three? Whether that be because of the world/levels, NPCs, gameplay, lore, atmosphere, or even just your personal story with the game, explain what makes this game so special to you.

Discussion Dark Souls vs Elden Ring

My first souls game was the og Dark Souls. I recently picked up Elden Ring and have spent around 20 hours in Limgrave and I gotta say that the magic that I felt with dark souls is completely missing and I don’t know why. I want to like this game and am just hoping with time it will click. Did any of you feel the same?
