An Absurd Interaction I Had While Delivering for Amazon

It was probably like my first or second week working there. I actually did enjoy the job before the pandemic happened. This was definitely around the holidays. But anywho. I remember this one day I had a bit of an altercation with a nurse I believe, or at least some lady who worked there. It must have been either a senior home or some kind of facility were they have residents living with disabilities. So I remember most places if it’s an apartment complex or any sort of business area, that these specific location would be locked or you would need a code to get in, which was always a nuisance to deal with, because if the customer who ordered their package didn’t provide any said code, it was just a huge problem that I had to deal with. Either I would have to try to contact the customer, which to be honest, most drivers never did or lied that they did because in most cases people nowadays don’t just pick up their phone to a random number claiming to be Amazon with there package. Just sounds like a huge scam to me. So I didn’t know exactly how to deal with this at that time, because like I said I was still pretty new to the whole thing.
So I pull up at this senior home/facility and I look at the doohickey device tellling me to drop off a package at said location and uh-oh, there’s no code to get in this place. So I waited a minute to see if someone would come in or pass by and there was nobody. I think maybe 5 minutes had passed by and I was losing patience. Now normally if too much time passes at a stop and the package hasn’t been marked as delivered, then that means a dispatcher who comfortably sits at the Amazon warehouse away from some brutal weather conditions that you’d normally have to deal with would give you a reminder call to tell you to basically hurry it up.
At this point I knew this and I hated dealing with dispatch getting annoying so I messaged them ahead of their call that I was having trouble getting into this persons place in the building to drop it off. We weren’t aloud to leave it in any mailing location unless instructed. So I’m growing impatient I message the dispatch jerkoff and he tells me to try asking around like I have all the fucking time in the world. So I try looking for some office in the area before noticing some double doors to my left side but I don’t see anyone there. But then all of a sudden I spot a nurse to the right side, opening the gate I had trouble getting into, walking out and closing the gate behind her. I immediately rush to her to try to get her attention but she appears to be ignoring me. I think to myself, maybe she didn’t hear me. She continues walking towards the office with the double doors and I’m sort of walking 7 feet behind her and follow her in trying to get her attention. She steps inside this office that looks more like an empty break room. She is still ignoring me and disappears to another room behind. So no I’m just stand there like what the fuck. This rude ass person was ignoring me for sure. I’m getting frustrated and consider just leaving and coming back later. As I’m standing there trying to figure out what I should do, this lady comes back out of this room rolling out this older person in a wheelchair who I believe must be a resident living here since I believed it was some kind of senior home or something. She sits at a table with this person and appears to be trying to get their attention or communicating with them with hand signals. This lady is clearly a nurse or someone who works here. I’m a little relieved. So I approach her telling her about my situation and how I couldn’t get into the building and I worked for Amazon. This rude ass bitch doesn’t even look at me and said you have to take it up with the person who is expecting the package. Now I’m little confused. I’m thinking maybe she’s not understanding what I’m trying to ask of her. So I ask her again and I tell her that I’ve tried calling the customer who ordered this package and he didn’t leave me with any code to get into the gate and that I saw her coming out from that gate and was hoping if she would give me the code to get in. She turns to me and in a sort of rude dismissive and annoyed tone said to me “I’m not going to provide you with any gate code sir, you must take it up with the package owner.” At this point I’m really annoyed and I start argueing with her and telling her I can’t get in if I don’t have any way to contact the customer. At this point she ignores me and the last thing she said was “ that’s not my problem.”
I did lose it a little bit and raised my voice while walking out and just choosing to leave. I was hoping at this point not to comeback. I remember the last things I think I said was “thanks for nothing lady, then I guess this person won’t be getting this package ever, maybe you can take it up with them when they complain to you about it.”
Not very professional. But I know, at this point I lost my cool. I was over it. I was really in a bad mood because of her. I called dispatch sort of arguing with them about it and telling them I’m not going to come back. This person was rude as shit, there’s no code or anything to get in. I was surprised that the dispatcher sided with me and said just bring the package back to the warehouse. To this day I think about this interaction just over how absurd and fucking rude she was. I’m surprised that people like this exist from time to time and I have moments about the interactions I had with them. I thought about it today and just felt like writing it down.

Looking for medical courier contracting job in DFW full time

Don’t care about the distance, I just want to do this, I’ve been looking for something like this for months, everything I’ve found pays $18/hr for 20hr work weeks. If I was able to keep myself afloat on $18k/yr I’d go work at target. Does anybody know any decently sized hospital that is currently hiring? I’ve got military experience, a clean driving record, and a reliable car.

I live in a big city and I just started doing this 3 days ago. I deliver on A 200cc moped and have been averaging about 17 bucks an hour accepting almost every order since I’m almost at the 45 orders for an extra $450. What are some tips on what type of orders I should and shouldn’t be accepting so that I can maximize profits, is it worth going for diamond status? Also for anyone else rides on a moped do you recommend any other apps?

Being an Air Mule

Hey guys. I just came across a company called Airmule. It basically was Uber for people who wanted to earn a little cash or rent out their luggage capacity to people whose goods will need to be transported by plane.

Does anyone have an idea for why a business like that would fail? It went bust in 2019. Is it be cause of safeguards regarding transporting goods for someone else? Or did they just pivot?

Looking to talk with drivers about delivery experiences

Hi everyone! I’m a grad student at Georgia Tech researching package delivery experiences, and I’m looking to talk with current or former delivery drivers.

It’s a 20-30 minute video call about what the work is really like, including the challenges, frustrations, and anything you wish apps or customers understood. Your answers are confidential, and you can skip any question or stop anytime.

If you are interested, send me a DM!

Best gig apps for full-time income?

I’m currently caring for my mom and looking for flexible ways to earn money. I’m planning on getting a car soon anyway, so I’m considering doing gig work full-time.

I’ve looked into Uber Eats, DoorDash, Instacart, Amazon Flex, Dragonfly, etc., but I’m wondering what other options are out there.

For those doing this full-time, which platforms are actually worth it? Ideally, I’d like to sign up for several and maximize my earnings. I’m in Canada, if that makes a difference.

Any suggestions or firsthand experiences would be appreciated!

New driver looking for suggestions on what services to consider

Looking at getting into this. I have a Tesla and would be in the Lexington KY area. I would prefer aa little customer interaction as possible along with not dealing with apartments or hunting down gate codes etc etc. I just don't know if there any any apps that might filter those out or even better filter to drop off only or would love to hear your thoughts. I basically just want as little opportunity for drama as possible

11 hours out, 38 stops, one bathroom break

I’m an independent courier doing mostly pharmacy runs and legal documents, with some DoorDash when things get slow. Almost everything runs through my phone: dispatch, maps, signatures, and delivery photos.

Today was 11 hours and 38 stops, with one bathroom break at a Sheetz around 2pm 😅

Some stops are quick, others mean waiting 25 minutes for someone to sign paperwork or making two trips because a nursing home’s front desk closes for lunch. Meanwhile, the dispatcher keeps texting like I can teleport between deliveries.

My phone usually dies around hour seven, so I keep a power bank attached and recharge it in the car. I also use open-ear earbuds for dispatcher calls so I can still hear people approaching while making deliveries.

Other essentials: a clipboard for manifests, nitrile gloves, a cooler, and a phone mount that’s survived three cars.

When your entire workday depends on your phone, these little things make a huge difference.

Why hasn’t someone built a delivery app that actually puts drivers first and gives DoorDash some serious competition?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Seriously, think about this.
Drivers provide the cars, gas, insurance, maintenance, and labor. Restaurants cook the food. Customers pay for everything. Yet somehow the people doing the actual work seem to have the least control.
What if somebody built a delivery app with a completely different business model?
Here’s the idea:
$8 minimum base pay per delivery, with mileage adjustments.
Drivers keep 100% of their tips.
No acceptance-rate games or punishment for declining orders.
Restaurants pay around 8% commission.
Customers see transparent fees instead of a bunch of surprises at checkout.
Drivers get paid for excessive wait times.
Drivers receive a share of company profits once the business becomes profitable.
The company makes money from reasonable commissions and delivery fees. Instead of squeezing drivers, restaurants, and customers for every penny, it focuses on building volume and keeping everyone happy.
Obviously, the numbers would need to work. You can’t promise $8 deliveries if the company loses money on every order. But that’s exactly what a real business plan would have to solve.
And here’s another thought.
Why not let drivers become part owners of the company? Give them an actual financial incentive to help grow the business.
Start in one market, prove the concept, and expand from there.
DoorDash and Uber Eats don’t own the restaurants. They don’t own the drivers’ vehicles. They aren’t cooking the food.
They’re basically running the technology connecting everyone.
So why couldn’t somebody build better technology, charge less, pay drivers more, and eventually give these companies a run for their money?
I’m not talking about another app that makes promises and turns into the same garbage six months later.
I’m talking about a legitimate driver-first company with a sustainable business model.
Drivers, restaurant owners, and customers: Would you actually support something like this? Or am I missing something?
I’d especially like to hear from anyone with experience in software development, logistics, or running a delivery business.
