Large Pile (>1 cu yd) Update: composting a deer carcass NSFW
galleryTrigger warning; scat, deer carcass, bones.
OP here, but I didn't actually post pictures, just linking if you wanted an update: https://www.reddit.com/r/composting/s/GLGPGCIyCv
FYI I am in the PNW, so CWD is not a concern here. I don't advocate for you to do this unless you are well educated on the techniques and willing to take some risk.
On August 18th, I found a decent sized doe (maybe 100lbs?) in my neighbor's yard that had been struck by a truck. I had started a pretty good size pile with a ton of wood chips, maybe 10 yards. I opened up the pile and placed her about a foot up in the center with about a half yard of wood chips, and piled it high.
The pile had a moderate rotten smell for maybe a week; surprisingly not too bad.
Today, with much trepidation, I opened up the pile, expecting to crack open the rib cage. To my surprise, I could barely find a trace. There was a huge "wet spot" in the middle of what is otherwise a too dry pile, but the most I found was a femur, a scapula, and....
A big ol chunk of poo! About the size of 2 fists. It's kind of wild, it looks like the intestines literally composted away around the feces. It looks more like a massive dog turd, so I wonder if the gut bacteria continued to break down the contents of the stomach as the carcass rotted, because it looks nothing like your standard deer pellets
Pics in order; funeral pile, wet spot, femur, poo, carcass, and bonus pics of when I was starting this pilr and unloaded a literal truck load of coffee grounds.
I may try to turn this pile once more before the heavy rains start. I'm really not looking forward to sifting all the rocks out of this mess.
