Recovery🙌 Wasabi DWC Midweek update (Day 6)

Trimmed all day leaves on the first pic. New leaves seem to be slowly coming as well. Changed water early since it was full of dead roots that were shedded. Root pics will be posted on Sunday for all plants.

Second picture: all leaves still healthy with new shoots rapidly being pushed. Previously had root rot, which was treated early and no sign of returning.

Third picture: two new shoots are forming! Its root system looks the healthiest and I am excited to show yall it on Sunday when I remove coverings. Hard to capture it head on, so it a bad picture…

Fourth picture: No new changes. Hopefully any sign of recovery is shown this week or early next.

DWC stats:

Temp 12h: 58 F
EC: 920-1000 us/cm
TDS: 400-500 ppm
pH remaining stable at 6.2. No extra acid has been added since previous Sunday.
rH 12- 85%

Coco coir sponges?

• Upvotes

Hi all. Does anyone have any suggestions for coco coir type grow sponges. I have an idoo hydro system and I'm finding that all of them seem to have the Prop 65 cancer warning. Any more natural alternatives? Thanks in advance.

Question ❔ What is a good on/off schedule for strawberry seedlings or verticals in general??

Post image

Doing 3 min on , 20 min off now that it’s cooler, and 45 min off in the evening. Ignore the seedlings, just giving them some sunshine . No lighting here.

I was running 3/12 as they were establishing

Thanks

Funny enough, started my hydroponic garden after watching The Last House on Netflix. Turned out pretty good so far.

From left to right: Bok Choi (2varieties), Albion Strawberries, micro tomato’s?(Red Robin and orange hat), 2 lettuce varieties.

Have another rack above with basil, parsley, bunching onions (which grow ridiculously slow), and more lettuce.

What do yous think?

Question ❔ Do I need to remove seeds that didn’t sprout?

Post image

Specifically for the mint with 2 sprouts and a little baby one. I accidentally spilled a ton of seeds on some of these cause i didn’t realize how small they are. First time with mint.

Or can I just move this rockwool cube over and just let the other seeds be and leave these 2-3 that sprouted?

Thanks in advanced

Hi fellow tower growers.

I couldnt find any place online to get covers for my unused holes in my flow grow tower. The amount of algae was annoying me, so I made some.

If you too want some I have left the file in Thingverse it is thing number 7422307.

Sorry pictures are not great. I did it whilst I was doing a deep clean of the system.... because side quest i suppose.

Feedback Needed 🆘 Making homemade hydroponic tower problems

Hey everyone,

I'm setting up a hydroponic system and running into a bit of a snag with my wicking.

Here's the setup: I've got a one-gallon reservoir with five holes for net pots. My plan is to use flannel as a wick to draw the nutrient solution up to the net pots, where my rockwool and plants will be.

The problem? The flannel isn't consistently wet at the bottom of the net pot. I've tried soaking the flannel first and then squeezing it a bit so it's not dripping wet, but I'm still seeing the water stop going up.

I'm wondering if the net pots need to be at an angle, or if there's a specific condition the flannel should be in. I did stretch out the flannel a bit when I was setting it up, and I'm thinking that might be contributing to the issue.

Any advice or tips on how to get good wicking action would be greatly appreciated!

Need Help Picking right material for 3d printing parts

Hey, I'm getting into hydroponics and aquaponics, and I'd like to 3D print most of my parts. My main concern is layer lines trapping bacteria and making everything harder to clean.

I was looking into chemically smoothing PETG, but the chemicals needed aren't legally available for me to buy here (bummer, ik). So I started looking at ASA since it's more UV-resistant and can be smoothed with acetone.

The problem is that I've seen people saying ASA can release toxic styrene even after being left to off-gas for a few days, while others say off-gassing makes it safe. I don't know enough chemistry to tell who's right.

My main questions are:

  • Is acetone-smoothed ASA actually safe for long-term use in hydroponic or aquaponic systems?
  • Could it leach anything harmful into the water, especially for fish?
  • Does off-gassing for a few days actually make a meaningful difference?
  • Is there a better filament or finishing method for parts that will be constantly exposed to water, UV light, and possibly fish?

I'm no expert; I just don't want to accidentally poison my plants, fish, or myself lol.

Thanks to anyone who can help! ❤️

I failed my first try (started too early without software updates 🫣) but this run seems a lot more promising! I’m seeing green everywhere. 🤗🌱 Welcome tomatoes! (There will be many, 9 pods on the left)

It’s a cool smart garden. Now sits in my living room corner and it’s looks don’t disappoint!

Ground frost sos harvest

I harvested all the peppers today, as the first ground frost is due this evening. The harvest amounts to about 2.5 kg of lovely, though partly unripe, peppers and about 1.5 kg of less attractive ones. The harvest comes from 2 plant.

I' m very surprised of this amount.

Will prob change this to weekly since there really isn’t much going on.

Update: gf made me these covers wrapped in tinfoil under with a small viewable portion to monitor aerator and roots in back. Very hard to capture via camera though so skipped it. No longer need to fiddle about with crumbled tinfoil after every update now, thankfully.

Root still look healthy, no visible rot today. Leaves remain healthy on first pic however, second plant still dried up, looking for new growth now for any sign of recovery.

Third picture, not exactly sure how to cover this one. He has a large root development system under, while I kept a majority under, couple remain in the air while I try to keep crown out of the moisture. Seems he has some partial rhizome development, even though it is very small.

All crowns remain firm and show no apparent sign of rot.

Stats:

EC and TDS remain stable approx 950-1000/450-500 respectively.

Temp last 12H - 62.2 F

RH 12H - 85 - trying to lower it very slowly to increase VPD during day. Not going below 85 currently though

pH remain stable now: avg all 4 - 6.04 - will leave them for couple days now alone as they recover more.

Odds of survival: No longer bleak - about 3% now. Will post next update either next Sunday or midweek!

Growing some funky peppers. They are doing well, I’d say! Though not your common greenhouse varieties.
