Never understood what people are talking about with this supposed "vomit taste". It's just not there for me. Heck, while typing this comment I had some of their chocolate, still tasted fine to me.
I'm half convinced it's just a cilantro soap gene situation lol
I always ate Hershey's as a kid and never had issue. I went to Germany for an exchange program in college, had German chocolate. About a year or two after that I got a Hershey bar, hadn't had one in years, but I used to like em. That's when I got hit with the vomit taste, and I had no idea it was a thing when it happened.
It's the butyric acid. If you are used to chocolate that doesn't have it then it's immediately apparent in the flavour. But if you grew up on it then you wouldn't notice.
I've always liked Hershey's just fine (Reese's cups are dope) but I can see what people mean about the "vomit" flavor. It has an acidity to it that's similar to stomach acid. It doesn't taste like vomit to me per se, but I can see how someone could interpret that flavor profile as puke-esque, if that makes any sense.
Leaves an aftertaste that feels reminiscent of what it's like after sicking up bile in the back of your throat a bit and swallowing it and trying to go about as usual when it kinda feels like you can taste it even though no actual sick made it into your mouth.
Actually it's because there's a chemical in American chocolate that's also found in vomit (parmesan too but I guess it's just less noticeable there or something). Americans have eaten chocolate many more times than we've vomited so we just don't associate the taste of that chemical with vomit like people who grew up eating chocolate without it. Young children also haven't had time to associate the taste with vomit so they tend to like or at least not mind American chocolate. Funny enough many Americans tend to feel like there's something missing in chocolate without it
