Bomb team investigates items left on Berkeley Amtrak train
I was jogging to Aquatic Park and passed the Amtrak station. It was all sectioned off with yellow tape and commuters were standing in the street waiting. Turns out there was a suspicious item left on the train?

Any recommendations? Don’t need to avoid eggs, just milk and butter.

Advice/Question Can locals share more about the city’s approach to the unhoused crisis in Berkeley?
I recently moved here and it’s absolutely stunning. I have previously lived in northern cities in the USA and Scandinavia.
The crisis with unhoused people in Berkeley is really saddening. The East Bay is really unlike anything I’ve seen in any city I’ve called home. Even since I moved here less than a year ago I’ve noticed it get worse.
Having lived in large cities my whole life, I am no stranger to these issues. Through my experiences I’ve seen how different regions and people choose to approach these problems.
For example, when I lived in Scandinavia, unhoused people essentially have “safe-areas”. These designated places within the city which drug use is essentially decriminalized, they have access to safe needles and can receive care. These areas are heavily policed, but the police do not make arrests or prosecute. They tend to ensure peace is kept and safety is maintained. Most of the time you’ll see the residents just chatting with them as if they’re a friend.
This kept these issues very centralized (residents are incentivized to come to a certain area) and safe (that certain area has plenty of safety measures). It also allowed a lot of them a chance to seek better help.
I’ve been curious to know more about what is being done in Berkeley. From what I’ve heard / seen, there appears to be a larger “hands-off” approach in the East Bay. Unhoused people are given lots of permission to reside almost anywhere with generally a lot more leniency.
I’m not criticizing any current approach or governance towards this issue. I’m purely just trying to understand more. I am aware I have limited knowledge of the situation and if I was so unhappy with it, it wouldn’t have moved here. Just want to see how these people are being helped when they need it most.
Thanks!

Food and Beverage Gather restaurant
What the heck happened to this place? Ordered a veggie burger from there months ago, was one of the best I ever had. Just ordered exactly the same and what I got was basically inedible and doesn’t at all match the menu description. Served with black fries. Was there an ownership change? Can’t believe this is supposed to be a top restaurant.

Unsolicited campaign materials taped to our building door & yard signs without permission. Ugh!
Today campaign flyers heavy duty taped to our building entrance no permission and yard signs on the lawn.
This is disrespectful & should be unlawful. Most likely done by their volunteers.
Both ends in the garbage.

does anyone know where I can meet other trans ladies or even just other sapphic women in general in the east bay?
hi hi! I'm a 21yo sapphic trans woman from Concord. basically all my friends live hella far away and I only get to hang out with them like once or twice a year. I've honestly been feeling pretty lonely lately do to lack of IRL consistent social connections so i really really wanna make friends with other ladies like me around here but I honestly have no idea where to find something like that :/
for context for like my hobbies and stuff I love love love Dungeons & Dragons (and I'd like to get into other ttrpg systems like Cyberpunk or Lancer), I don't have any yet but I absolutely adore reptiles (especially snakes) and I'd love to be able to keep some someday, I really really love cooking (and am currently studying culinary arts at DVC), and even though I haven't started trying to teach myself how to do makeup I really really like goth makeup/fashion.
If anyone knows of like any events nearby related to any of that kind of stuff or transfemme-focused stuff in general please please please let me know!!! :D

Are school playgrounds open today?
Anyone know if schools are treating today like the weekend? My kid wants to go to her school playground and I'm wondering if it will be unlocked (it's one of the ones that's open on the weekend).
Edit: it was not unlocked -_-

Charging Tesla on the Sidewalk
How do we feel about charging cars on the sidewalk, even if there’s some room (barely) to get by?
This was somewhere around Camelia between 4th and 5th. Also, just in case, not my car.

Scooter riders: please be more aware
In particular e-scooters.
This time, it’s not speeding down a busy sidewalk, or zig-zagging in unpredictable ways on any sidewalk, bike path, or roadway….
….Or throwing all traffic rules to the wind and blowing stop signs, red lights; entirely oblivious to right of way rules / basic traffic etiquette….
…Nor is it abandoning scooters on a whim, where it blocks most of a sidewalk, creating a blockage or even road hazard… or takes up so much space that it makes it challenging for bicyclists to park their bikes (in an orderly way)….
… This time it’s the obliviousness and stupidly to lock their friggan chaos-vehicle in such a way (through rear shifter cable of bike) that it prevented the bicycle from moving… pretty inconvenient, especially if the cyclist doesn’t have any hex tools on hand.
Please be more aware, more respectful of others, and less ignorant, in general.
Thanks.
P.S. at least wear a helmet and use lights if you’re going to be so reckless

bike repair for old bike? missing the missing link these days
Hi folks, I wonder where you're getting your bikes repaired these days in the Berkeley/Albany/El Cerrito-ish area. I have an ancient steel bike that needs more tuning up than I want to do (replace brake pads, investigate/resolve play in headset, maybe install fenders). Where can I take my elderly commuter for a little spiff-up before the rain hits?
Someplace not Mike's bikes, please, since they've done me dirty twice now: #1 was sloppy/dangerous work that I caught before I got hurt thankfully -- so I know those folks don't test ride after significant repairs, and #2 I was snottily dismissed when I came in with a flat on a 26" wheel.
Thank you in advance!
ETA: thank you all so much! This is a great list already. I appreciate you east bay cyclists!!

Local Merchants Spend the fall season with a foster rabbit! 👻🎃🍂
Spend the fall season with a foster rabbit from House Rabbit Society! No rabbit experience required! Learn more at houserabbit.org/foster. We're located in Richmond, just north of Berkeley, but welcome fosters from all over the San Francisco Bay Area. We only ask for a 2-week commitment.
What We Provide: We'll equip you with all the supplies you need to get started, including an x-pen, litter box, bedding, food pellets, hay, blankets, and bowls for food and water. As a foster, you also receive a 15% discount at the HRS Hop Shop if you'd like to purchase any additional toys or treats while you foster.
What You Provide: The time, space, love, and care your foster rabbit needs, along with their daily veggies (approximately $5-10 per week). Getting socialization in a foster home is so important, especially for rabbits who are shy or have other behavior needs and helping them become more comfortable with people. You can help a foster rabbit blossom into the wonderful house rabbit they're truly meant to be!
Questions? Email [foster@houserabbit.org](mailto:foster@houserabbit.org) or stop by our facility to talk in-person with HRS volunteers and staff and to meet the rabbits. We recently transitioned to our winter hours; we're open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm. We'd love to talk with you!

Measure U
Curious how people who bought homes here recently feel about large assessed value tax measures like U.
According to Berkeleyside
In a city where longtime homeowners' assessed values have been capped far below market rates as a result of California's Proposition 13, while more recent buyers pay sky-high prices, the potential new cost would vary widely. For a home with the city's average assessed value of about $550,000, it would add $242 to the annual tax bill, while someone who bought a home at the current median sale price — $1.4 million, according to Zillow — would pay an additional $616.
Is there some reason this has to be done through a GO bond (secured by assessed value) vs other funding means?
Maybe this is a crazy naive take but it feels like if these things are important (and I’m not arguing they aren‘t) then Berkeley residents should be willing to bear the costs more equitably based on sq ft parcel value (with a low income senior exemption obviously) … as proposed this just increases the cost of living inequality that Prop 13 created.
