Tabletop BattleTech Buyer's Guide 2026
Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.
Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).
Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!
EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.
EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

Miniatures Unseen Griffin with a chrome-like canopy aka the Kojima Roundfacer
This is based on the special 24th Unit based out of Palmina and in the Deloyeran war of independence. They were piloted by a group of four ace pilots.
I went for a chrome-like reflection on the canopy, I'm not sur ehow much I like it tbh... It's novel but I'm not sure I'll use it again.

Miniatures All Griffin Lance that wants to get truth!
I have four versions of the Grififn painted up and ready to go, and I probably won't paint another one! The last one was the Catalyst Game Labs version, but honestly I feel like it's not really a Griffin without the helmet hoses!

Miniatures Unseen Wolverine and how it compares
I really love the Fang of the Sun Dougram series thanks to Battletech, and so I grabbed this unseen version on eBay and painted it up in one of the styles from the show, and here it is along with the Catalyst version (that I updated a bit).

Miniatures Things can seem so amazing 'Til you get up close And see they're no big deal. Marauder painted for the jackalopes.
Painting another lance, based on obscure song lyrics, meant to be either against the bad seeds for a classic match, or pushed together for alpha strike. Any feedback and criticism would be appreciated, these are practice pieces for some upcoming painting competitions.

Discussion Project Phoenix Phoenix Project--what next?
Now that we've started getting second and third variants of various chassis, Catalyst has started lifting some of the design motifs from the Project Phoenix versions of the various unseen mechs and applying those details to their reimagined New Classics designs. We saw this with the alternative "sunroof" cockpit option for the Davion battle lance Thunderbolt and the top wing details for the Rifleman C 2 in the Scouring Sands box.
Which mech do we think will/want to be the next unseen to get some Project Phoenix details reborn? The Capellan Aces box has been announced as containing a Griffin 5L and I think there's a decent chance we see some of the language from the rest of the GRF-5x series carry over into it, but I'm curious if anyone has other stuff they'd like to see

Miniatures PSA: Clan Battle Star mechs are reposed
I snagged this at my local Barnes & Noble on a whim. Turns out they reposed the Clan Invasion box mechs. I think they look great. At a glance, it seems the mold lines are a lot cleaner, with better overall detail than my original CI box mechs.

Miniatures Mech ID Help
My son is 9 years old and plays a modified version of the game. He was gifted a number of battletech minis, most have numbers on underside of base and are easily indentifiable, but we have a few, here are 3, that we require some community assistance with as there are no numbers. I did my best to get good photos, the blue and black primed ones were a bit hard to photograph.

Meme This has become increasingly apparent to me over many hours playing MW5
I don’t really use light mechs…for me and the rest of my Lance; Heavy or Assault. I prefer to be slow with a big gun over fast with weak weapons.

Tabletop Very excited to start
I was a huge mech commander fan growing up, very excited to finally get stuck into Battletech I think I've decided to do Zulu Company in House Davion. Haven't learned how to play yet, can you recommend any good YouTube channels to get me started on learning the ropes? I understand this isn't the simplest of tabletop games to learn.
I've got Aces on the way but also keen to learn the more traditional rule set (whatever is most played really).
If you have any pointers for a first game with a friend that's also keen to try, that would also be super appreciated.
Thank you!

Tabletop TTB Mech Overview: Scorpion
Lynn's back with another entry from the Security Lance, this time the OG skittering little guy, the Scorpion! I always loved the look of this thing back in the day, but found it an immense disappointment to try to use. Go check out how people have tried to fix that over the years!

Lore Are there any good write-ups going over how the games(mw5 especially) differ from the lore
Newish fan to the setting, been getting very into mw5, and am curious about if there are any good write-ups about how mechanics in MW5(things like Mech Movement, mechbay repairs/modifications, etc etc) differ from how a merc company would experience these within the setting, not looking to pick a fight just curious to understand where the deviations are.

Discussion Suggestions for a secondary Reference Page? I have a chart for basic impact damage, firing and damage arc diagrams, and a minimum range diagram
I'm assembling a second "Quick Reference" sheet to help out new players. The current version I have includes diagrams for hit directions & firing arcs, a chart for common kinds of impact damage, and a visual explanation for minimum range. Does anyone have suggestions for other things to include? (I already plan on adding the page# reference from the Core Rules, and the Target Numbers for melee.)

Tabletop The core rule book
The new core rule book looks great! The numerous diagrams FAQ section and detailed index make all the rules easy to use and at least in my experience it’s much easier to use than Total War. I’m not saying that TW is bad but it was kind of wall of text full of variant rules and exceptions upon exceptions, the core book is at least to me easier to navigate. Something I also appreciate the is the FAQ section, it’s a very helpful inclusion. After a year ive realized I’ve been playing my hatchet man all wrong.
My only complaint is that the full rules of vehicle, aircraft and infantry are not in the core book, it only offers the battlefield support options. I like the BFS rules but I wish they were included along with the TW vehicle and infantry rules.
Catalyst did a great job with this book, ide rate it a 9/10!!!
