Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.
Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).
Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!
EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.
EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

I need to rant about something. Look at any map of the Inner Sphere and you see these nice color coated sections. The Lyrans are blue, the Draconis are red, the FWL are purple, and the Capellans are green. Their colors match the primary colors of their emblems and are the primary colors for their mechs. It makes it easy to tell who is who on the battlefield and it's just good design language. So why in the ever loving hell are the combat colors for the Federated Suns not yellow/orange? Their emblem is yellow/orange, their color on the map is yellow, but the supposedly iconc color for their mechs is Davion green? We already have a green faction, that's the Capellans! I know that I can paint them any color I want but it's still an oversite that Catalyst Game Labs need to correct immediately. Rant over.

A tracked tank with jump jets?
As a ground vehicle enthusiast, I must insist.

Been collecting lance miniatures to paint for a little while already. I guess it’s time to actually start learning to play the tabletop. Are the playing pieces considered game legal still?

"The Grendel J slammed down into the woods directly in front of his hidden mech. Terrance held his breath - not that it would make a difference from inside the cockpit of his 25 ton Ebony. The monster of a mech somehow hadn't noticed him, and was firing on the rest of his company embattled in the clearing. This was his moment - maybe his last - but he damn sure would make it count..."
An Ebony proxy I modeled up and printed! Man, it was fun. Also very challenging. The Ebony is such a weird but cool design - very dude-in-a-mech-suit. Lots of smooth shapes. I've painted him in my take on the McCarron's Armored Cavalry Second Company. I didn't have the balls to paint on the Confederation icon but I'm happy enough with how he turned out!

Another incredible piece of artwork for the Wraith video I produced for Youtube.
This is another one by Jayden Morris, this time depicting a Word of Blake Wraith (Praise Blake!), fighting against a Ghost Bear Locust IIC.
Jayden always delivers incredible artwork, and I'm over the moon for his contributions for this video. It's awesome.

Sorry if this is a 101 kind of question but I have only read a couple books before clan invasion and watched the old school cartoon and played some of the hairbrain Arano game.
I assumed the concept of mechs that could be customized per mission would standardize mech to single chassis’s per weight or even less than mechs in general but it does seem like there are TONS of mechs for clans

Got around to painting my favorite mech. When I heard the name mentioned in a book, I looked it up to see the design and I ordered the model almost immediately. I wish it got more love.

Before and after of my 1st Canopian Cuirassiers' new Griffin, leftover from the days when they were occupied by the SLDF.
The method I use has a base coat of Army Painter's "Sunburst Ochre" which doesn't have the typical disgusting green hue of most yellow on black paints and then Arny Painter's primary yellow "Daemonic Yellow" on top, both done with dry brushing only to give it the basic grungy appearance (pic 3) before I clearcoat it and add a dark wash

Hey Pilots, I was in the store browsing Paints when I came across 2 force packs. They're both about $34 but I only have the budget for 1. Which is the better choice? I'm new to the hobby and only have 8 mechs so far I've collected Piece meal.
Update: Somebody asked so I'll post my mech collection here for reference.

Mechwarriors: The next generation of BattleTech terrain is finally here!
Lorescape, the officially licenced modular terrain system designed for BattleTech, launches today on Kickstarter.
Made to expand, elevate and customise your existing maps, these hex-tiles fit seamlessly into the existing ecosystem with hexes sized to fit printed maps and mech-bases, and with biome matched graphics on the tiles including essential features like cover and rough terrain.
Terrain packs are available for Grassland, Desert, Lunar, Tundra and the new core box maps, with more to come in stretch goals.
Along with the terrain packs come a range of accessories to aid in your battles, missions and campaigns. These include a range of transparent tile caps that add extra cover, buildings, effects and mission markers.
The entire system is light-weight, high-quality, easy to use, efficient to store, compact to transport, and durable.
We also support the integration of other products such as buildings, trees, and rocks, via our open-source clip-on interface and hex-clip system.
The next generation of BattleTech terrain deploys today. Elevate your battles and back the campaign at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lorefoundry/lorescape-battletech

Alternate title: I recently learned about X-ray lasers and Project Excalibur and started having ideas. Specially ideas for a powerful but silly one-shot laser weapon.
When digging through captured RISC files, Clan Sea Fox scientists discovered that some RISC scientists had thought that the Hyper Laser wasn't pushing the boundaries of laser technology far enough. Documents detailed plans for a more powerful weapon that moved beyond the visible spectrum, pushing all the way into the X-ray range.
The proposed X-ray laser would be able to unleash devastating amounts of damage in a single shot, delivering as much energy as a capital laser in a much smaller package. The intense beam would dismember most mechs in a single blast and ignore special armors by virtue of the sheer quantity of energy released.
Unfortunately, that was about as far as the good aspects went. The X-Ray Laser required huge amounts of energy to fire, pulling every ounce of available power from the reactor and risking it shutting down. All the proposed lasing mediums would be unable to handle the energy, briefly turning the core of the weapon into plasma upon firing. The X-Ray laser also required immense levels of shielding to prevent the less concentrated burst of X-Rays emitted from the vaporized lasing material from harming other systems, especially in the rear of the laser assembly. The shielding also served to contain the heat of the X-Ray laser, keeping the heat emitted by the weapon at a "concerning" level rather than "cataclysmic."
Even with all these flaws, it appears that the RISC scientists tried to make it usable. What seems to have killed the project was trying to find a way to "reload the laser." Trying to store and automatically load replacement lasing mediums made the weapon heavy, bulky, and prone to failure. Sea Fox scientists believe the straw that broke the camels back was a researcher proposing having a mech muzzle load the device, upon which it appears the the entire team simultaneously gave up and left the project.
The Sea Foxes have opted not to try and produce their own example of the X-Ray laser, as there was no way the weapon could be produced profitably. They seem to have left the schematics relatively lightly guarded, perhaps as some sort of white elephant gift for anyone who does manage to steal data from them.
X-Ray Laser
Heat: 36
Damage: 32
Range(S/M/L) 10/21/32
Tons: 12
Slots: 8
BV: ?????
Restrictions:
-Must be mounted on a unit with a Fusion Reactor.
-Upon firing, the unit firing the X-Ray Laser must make a shutdown check at 10+
-If a 2 is rolled on when firing, the X-Ray Laser fails to fire and is destroyed.
So yeah, thats the idea. Please be aware that this is not meant to be more than a joke of a weapon. Any ideas on how to make it silly but (hopefully) fair are encouraged.
