Alex Call was replying to another user commenting how the game had the Sydney Sweeney ad, an ED ad with Megan Fox and the creepy Other Mommy trailer.

Okay but seriously fuck that other mommy bullshit shit needs to bomb and stop having ads so that I don't have to watch everything on a time delay to make sure I can avoid it. For some reason that particular one really fucks with the kids and I like being able to sleep through the night

Shit about parents, especially moms, fucks kids up. That Mars Needs Moms movie bombed hard and the marketing/research determined the biggest reason was kids didnt want to see it because the idea of their moms getting kidnapped was too sad and scary

Meanwhile every Disney film wrecked millennials by killing off mom.

My first Disney mom death was Bambi. Gen X was raised hardcore.

u/CruelCircus New York Mets 8h ago

Bambi came out in 1942. Even boomers were raised on it.

Millenials also grew up with Bambi on VHS

I don't know, the Jimmy Neutron movie revolved around all parents being kidnapped and nearly sacrificed to a giant chicken god, and that's been named as the number 1 movie of all time on at least one list (yeah it's my list, so what ya wanna fight about it?)

u/oneeighthirish Chicago White Sox 9h ago

It's gotta be a vibes thing. If the kids in the movie are distraught over the disappearance of mom, then kids in the audience will be, too. If the kids are partying because there's no rules, then the kids in the audience will be entertained.

The beauty about Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is that it had both

I liked it as a kid

Except for that pizza monster. That shit was terrifying.

I mean that movie being filled with uncanny valley people didn't help either

My daughter loved that movie lol

u/stiggz Toronto Blue Jays 10h ago

The book was awful too tbh the main character says 'Daddo' every other word and its super annoying

1

u/caribou16 Philadelphia Phillies 7h ago

Reminds me of this movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trading_Mom

Bunch of kids think their divorced working mom is annoying, and are able to "magically" change her into three different versions of herself, which are minor aspects of her personality turned up to 11. The the daughter chooses a French socialite, the older boy an outdoors loving backpacker, and the youngest a circus clown.

These James Wan produced movies rarely bomb. They’re made for dirt cheap and audiences show up for them. A lot of them are awful movies but they have the formulaic jumpscare fest down to a science

Remember the 2021 hit Insidious: The Red Door?

I don’t. But it made nearly 200 mil on a 16 mil budget. I’m positive Other Mommy will have similar success and will rake in cash for the rest of the month

32

u/the_descendent San Diego Padres 11h ago

I wish James Wan would leave Insidious-world behind. His movie Malignant from a few years ago was so good

22

u/PeachMonster_666 10h ago

And ironically Malignant has been his biggest box office flop too. The guy made Saw and then started the money printing franchises Insidious and The Conjuring

Then for whatever reason Malignant didn’t get the same success. Despite being arguably the best movie he’s directed

u/venustrapsflies Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago

I haven't seen Saw (the original) since I was a teenager but I remember thinking it was a good, simple psychological horror movie. Pretty sure the franchise quickly devolved into to torture porn after that but it doesn't look like he was involved.

u/Verianas Brewers Bandwagon • NPB 7h ago

James only did the first one, and yeah people who misnomer it as torture porn are thinking entirely of the sequels. You don't really see anything in the first movie. They cut away from the sawing.

Probably had to do with the release timing at the tail end of the pandemic. I recall it was released direct to streaming and in theaters simultaneously.

1

u/AhSalamiBacon666 10h ago

That movie was absolutely hilarious!

I loved Insidious: The Red Door. It also made a great Halloween Horror Nights house.

u/MrSantaClause Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11h ago

It's getting absolutely terrible reviews so hopefully we're done seeing the ads.

26

u/Sooperballz Baltimore Orioles 11h ago

And it was still first place at the box office

4

u/peon2 Boston Red Sox 10h ago

Gotta go see it to know it's bad...also looking at the box office I don't even really know these other movies. Verity, Heart of the Beast, Social Reckoning? I know Resident Evil but didn't know they had a new movie. Did any of those do any marketing?

Verity, Heart of the Beast, Social Reckoning? I know Resident Evil but didn't know they had a new movie. Did any of those do any marketing?

Verity is basically an arthouse erotic thriller that got a wide release because of who was involved in making it—it's already earned 3x its budget.

Hear of the Beast is a Brad Pitt vehicle about a retired special forces veteran that is in a plane crash with his dog, and they have to hike to civilization together.

Social Reckoning is about the whistleblower leaking a bunch of internal Facebook memos about how evil they are.

Resident Evil is from Zach Creggor (dfirector of Barbarian and Weapons) and has had some pretty hefty marketing. It's an awesome film.

I've seen advertising for all of these just watching sports. Maybe even all for baseball at that.

Probably won’t last long at the top with the Street Fighter movie and Whalefall in theatres this week.

1

u/KopitarFan Los Angeles Angels 9h ago

Did it have any competition?

Tbf my wife and I looked into possibly seeing a movie this weekend and there were 3-4 options that all sucked.

1

u/mageta621 Boston Red Sox 10h ago

Darn I actually thought it looked kinda intriguing from the tv trailer. Like Coraline but live action

3

u/OkSecretary1231 St. Louis Cardinals 9h ago

I haven't seen it yet, but apparently the creepy scene from the trailer is basically the beginning of the movie, and nothing after that is as intense.

2

u/mageta621 Boston Red Sox 9h ago

Damn thanks for saving me 90 minutes tho

1

u/Sir_Bass13 Tampa Bay Rays 5h ago

I saw it, it's honestly not that bad. It's definitely more of a "horror junk food" type of movie, but a fairly good one imo. Worth the $15 ticket at least.

14

u/Sell_The_team_Jerry Chicago White Sox 11h ago

D+ Audience Score from Cinescore, but it's not a bomb. It already made a profit after 1 week and will continue on for a few more weeks at least. Bad movies can make money if their budget is low enough. Expect more horror schlock

2

u/jimihenderson New York Mets 9h ago

malignant is considered a "cult classic with great reviews" but a box office bomb. wan's typical horror slop are all massively successful financially. at this point, the movie getting good reviews would be the kiss of death and getting blasted by critics means he's got another hit

15

u/Khaldaan 11h ago

It had a pretty good opening weekend, already covered its budget, but apparently word of mouth ratings are awful lol. Should be interesting to see how much it tanks.

2

u/SomeRavingLunatic Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

I have friends who want to see it for the “so bad it’s good” factor. So… we’ll see how far that takes it lol

2

u/achesst Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago

Tell them to read the book it's based on instead. "Incidents Around the House".

1

u/tokengaymusiccritic Boston Red Sox • Hartford Yard Goats 10h ago

It got terrible reviews but still made 50m. It's already out though so the ads should stop soon.

1

u/Der_Dunkinmeister Texas Rangers • World Series Trophy 9h ago

It’s really not that scary of a movie imo

2

u/redditlvlanalysis 8h ago

Yeah tell that to little kids

1

u/dimechimes San Francisco Giants 8h ago

Seems like a movie written by a committee of suits trying to capture trends.

2

u/redditlvlanalysis 4h ago

The trailer seems like it's explicitly made to give little kids screaming nightmares

u/galacticdude7 Detroit Tigers • West Michigan W… 8h ago

I bet the people who made Other Mommy were pissed when they found out that Coraline had a character called "Other Mother" and thus already took their first choice for a title

1

u/Verianas Brewers Bandwagon • NPB 7h ago

It's a fun bad horror movie, but I can imagine the marketing would scare the shit out of a child.

1

u/redditlvlanalysis 4h ago

Can very much confirm unfortunately
