Alex Call was replying to another user commenting how the game had the Sydney Sweeney ad, an ED ad with Megan Fox and the creepy Other Mommy trailer.

Okay but seriously fuck that other mommy bullshit shit needs to bomb and stop having ads so that I don't have to watch everything on a time delay to make sure I can avoid it. For some reason that particular one really fucks with the kids and I like being able to sleep through the night

u/TrapperJean New York Yankees 11h ago

Shit about parents, especially moms, fucks kids up. That Mars Needs Moms movie bombed hard and the marketing/research determined the biggest reason was kids didnt want to see it because the idea of their moms getting kidnapped was too sad and scary

Meanwhile every Disney film wrecked millennials by killing off mom.

I don't know, the Jimmy Neutron movie revolved around all parents being kidnapped and nearly sacrificed to a giant chicken god, and that's been named as the number 1 movie of all time on at least one list (yeah it's my list, so what ya wanna fight about it?)

41

u/oneeighthirish Chicago White Sox 9h ago

It's gotta be a vibes thing. If the kids in the movie are distraught over the disappearance of mom, then kids in the audience will be, too. If the kids are partying because there's no rules, then the kids in the audience will be entertained.

The book was awful too tbh the main character says 'Daddo' every other word and its super annoying

1

u/caribou16 Philadelphia Phillies 7h ago

Reminds me of this movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trading_Mom

Bunch of kids think their divorced working mom is annoying, and are able to "magically" change her into three different versions of herself, which are minor aspects of her personality turned up to 11. The the daughter chooses a French socialite, the older boy an outdoors loving backpacker, and the youngest a circus clown.

These James Wan produced movies rarely bomb. They’re made for dirt cheap and audiences show up for them. A lot of them are awful movies but they have the formulaic jumpscare fest down to a science

Remember the 2021 hit Insidious: The Red Door?

I don’t. But it made nearly 200 mil on a 16 mil budget. I’m positive Other Mommy will have similar success and will rake in cash for the rest of the month

30

u/the_descendent San Diego Padres 11h ago

I wish James Wan would leave Insidious-world behind. His movie Malignant from a few years ago was so good

23

u/PeachMonster_666 10h ago

And ironically Malignant has been his biggest box office flop too. The guy made Saw and then started the money printing franchises Insidious and The Conjuring

Then for whatever reason Malignant didn’t get the same success. Despite being arguably the best movie he’s directed

2

u/venustrapsflies Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago

I haven't seen Saw (the original) since I was a teenager but I remember thinking it was a good, simple psychological horror movie. Pretty sure the franchise quickly devolved into to torture porn after that but it doesn't look like he was involved.

4

u/Verianas Brewers Bandwagon • NPB 7h ago

James only did the first one, and yeah people who misnomer it as torture porn are thinking entirely of the sequels. You don't really see anything in the first movie. They cut away from the sawing.

1

u/FriendoftheNight818 Los Angeles Dodgers 10h ago

Probably had to do with the release timing at the tail end of the pandemic. I recall it was released direct to streaming and in theaters simultaneously.

Gotta go see it to know it's bad...also looking at the box office I don't even really know these other movies. Verity, Heart of the Beast, Social Reckoning? I know Resident Evil but didn't know they had a new movie. Did any of those do any marketing?

7

u/penguinopph Chicago Cubs • RCH-Pinguins 10h ago

Verity, Heart of the Beast, Social Reckoning? I know Resident Evil but didn't know they had a new movie. Did any of those do any marketing?

Verity is basically an arthouse erotic thriller that got a wide release because of who was involved in making it—it's already earned 3x its budget.

Hear of the Beast is a Brad Pitt vehicle about a retired special forces veteran that is in a plane crash with his dog, and they have to hike to civilization together.

Social Reckoning is about the whistleblower leaking a bunch of internal Facebook memos about how evil they are.

Resident Evil is from Zach Creggor (dfirector of Barbarian and Weapons) and has had some pretty hefty marketing. It's an awesome film.

3

u/OkSecretary1231 St. Louis Cardinals 9h ago

1

u/Sir_Bass13 Tampa Bay Rays 5h ago

I saw it, it's honestly not that bad. It's definitely more of a "horror junk food" type of movie, but a fairly good one imo. Worth the $15 ticket at least.

15

u/Sell_The_team_Jerry Chicago White Sox 11h ago

D+ Audience Score from Cinescore, but it's not a bomb. It already made a profit after 1 week and will continue on for a few more weeks at least. Bad movies can make money if their budget is low enough. Expect more horror schlock

2

u/jimihenderson New York Mets 9h ago

malignant is considered a "cult classic with great reviews" but a box office bomb. wan's typical horror slop are all massively successful financially. at this point, the movie getting good reviews would be the kiss of death and getting blasted by critics means he's got another hit

17

u/Khaldaan 11h ago

Slightly.

It has an ominous tone. A child normally has one mother, so what does "other" Mommy mean?

In context of the movie, it would sound weird if the girl kept referring to her as “other mother” because for one, the rhyming would sound weird, and for two, what six year old girl refers to her mom as “mother”

Other mommy is just much more natural/less forced

It's no different then Smile and Insidious which had favorable reviews.  Not sure why this was worse reviewed

16

u/smarjorie New York Mets • Hartford Yard Goats 11h ago

Probably exactly because of that...it's a rehash of horror tropes that have been used to death lately. I'm tired of the "ooo scary smile" horror movies

3

u/unfortunatebastard Atlanta Braves 11h ago

Tbh white woman smiling with death in their eyes is one of the scariest things for me.

6

u/metaldrummerx Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

I'm tired of scary movies where at the end of it you find out it was a cult worshipping the devil pulling the strings the whole time. It's lazy writing at this point. Oh, grandma turns out was in a devil cult and cursed us 30 years ago? Long Legs, Hereditary, even Paranormal Activity eventually got back there. Not for me.

4

u/SwiftlyChill Minnesota Twins 10h ago

Hereditary’s works pretty well IMO because it plays very well with the overall themes of the movie.

The rare time in a horror where the “Grandma did this” was more important to me than the “Demon cult is behind this” - because we care more about their family. By the end, the audience is saying of course she also left that inheritance for them.

10

u/Tmoney108 11h ago

If you saw Smile and Smile 2 and think Other Mommy is on par with that, we need a mental health check. Other Mommy was absolutely awful as a horror movie. Jump scares were terrible, character motivation made absolutely zero sense and every performance in the movie other than Chastain was good.

Other Mommy was so so bad.

4

u/coolhandflukes Baltimore Orioles 11h ago

I saw Other Mommy last night. It’s much much worse than either Smile or Smile 2. It simultaneously moves quickly, yet feels interminable. It suffers from having a fairly simple and potentially interesting premise that is unnecessarily overstuffed with half-hearted gestures at familiar themes and tropes (is Other Mommy like Smile? It Follows? The Babadook? Hellraiser? Coraline?). It doesn’t commit to any one thing, doesn’t really strive for any internal logic, and ends up being dull as a result. By the final 15 minutes you’re just waiting for it to end.

63

u/TDeLo Cincinnati Reds 11h ago

Looks like a solid movie.

It's getting shredded by the critics. Audiences seem split on it.

19

u/macksbenwa Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

If you're a horror fan it's a fun time but I don't think it does anything to really transcend the genre like movies like Hereditary, Weapons or Obsession do.

2

u/N8CCRG Boston Red Sox 10h ago

Yeah, if you're looking for a spooky October movie, this one scratches that itch just fine. If you're looking for a top ten movie of the year, this won't likely make the cut.

2

u/bigbluethunder Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago

You seem like you have good taste. You should watch Talk 2 Me, Bring Her Back, and Black Phone.

1

u/macksbenwa Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

I liked Talk 2 Me. Bring Her Back I thought was pretty good, although I didn't like it as much as T2M. I still have to watch Black Phone.

2

u/Spostman Seattle Mariners 9h ago

lol how did "Weapons" "transcend" the horror genre? Haven't seen the other two but that movie was pretty basic.

0

u/macksbenwa Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

Transcend is probably a bit intense of a word there but I viewed Weapons as a horror movie that had mass mainstream appeal which, as it relates to my point, Other Mommy does not imo.

-2

u/mvsr990 San Francisco Giants 8h ago

That A24 shit doesn’t transcend the genre they just turns everything into “what if it’s FAMILY TRAUMA” snoozers.

29

u/bigbluethunder Milwaukee Brewers 11h ago

It was a fun horror movie, but not a particularly fleshed or high quality one. Pacing issues, no thematic depth, mixed messaging, and poor use of some tropes.

Still a fun one to see in theaters especially if you are an A Lister or something, but zero staying power in my mind lol

1

u/captainp42 Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago

Felt to me like it'd be one of those movies where the trailer is all you need to see.

3

u/bigbluethunder Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago
