Just like when I made the post about beating Baldur's Gate 1 for the first time, I have to say it's a very good game. But… at least for me, I still feel that the first game left a better taste in my mouth.
I loved playing high-level AD&D even though many times I didn't know what was happening on screen or why my protagonist suddenly went from +100 hp to 10 in 1 round with certain enemies.
Jon Irenicus is a better villain in the sense that he appears more than Sarevok, is much more powerful, and commands respect with his voice.
But at least for me, the last two battles against him were very underwhelming. Yes, I lost like three times in the Tree of Life, but after casting Improved Alacrity with Imoen and spamming Ruby Rays, from one moment to the next, his entire life went to 1 in 0 seconds. And I was like, "Is that all?" After that, the battle in hell is even easier. With Sarevok, at least, I feel more tension; the music is incredible, and his companions are there to cause serious trouble.
And the world… the reduction in exploration is very noticeable, and that's saying something considering that Baldur's Gate 1 wasn't exactly a huge world either. I felt quite confined, going through the same maps multiple times in each chapter. Everything feels very small: Athkatla, Spellhold, The Underdark. I expected more, in short.
What is worth highlighting is the amount of dialogue with the characters, especially with the potential lovers of Gorion's Ward. As you may have noticed in the image, I brought the Big 3 in my group: Jaheira, Aerie and Viconia DeVir. Since it was my first time playing, I wanted to experience as many interactions as possible. Who won? Viccy.
I really like characters who are distrustful of everything, and you try to gain their trust without forcing it, simply by being there and listening. Also, the fact that it's not like some "I can save her" type of thing; she's haughty and tough throughout the entire romance and I love it. She's not perfect, she's cruel, vain and a liar, but that's precisely what makes her a good, well-written character. Nobody's perfect. Also, I loved the breakup at the end; she knows she's causing problems and is afraid of causing further harm.
In short, the story is good, it's fun to play, the villains are very good, their final battles not so much (for me), the world seemed like a madhouse to me and what kept me sane was a drow. A good experience.
I give Baldur's Gate 1 a 9.5 out of 10
I give Baldur's Gate 2 a 9 out of 10
