Bigfoot hurt his right thigh or hip so now he’s in the healing cage. Neither him or his wife are too pleased about the situation. I don’t mind if she sleeps beside him but when she jumps on top, she be pooping on him lol.
Don’t worry, I’m gonna add a trash bag on top tonight so that doesn’t happen.

General Question My friend gave me three chickens and now I'm panicking

So a friend of mine gave me 3 chickens for free and now Im realizing I have no idea what I'm doing lol.Never raised chickens before and im stressed about keeping them safe and making sure I'm doing everything right. My neighbor suggested putting a camera near the coop so I can check on them especially at night and when im at work. Thats sounds like a good idea but I m not sure if it's really necessary or just another thing to worry about. 1.Anyone here use cameras for their chickens? 2.Are they worth having as a beginner? 3.Any tips for someone completely new to this would be appreciated.

General Question Serama size versus my Dutch booted bantams?

Most of my questions are stated in the video!
But as a summary, I was wondering, how different in size would seramas be versus my current bantams.
I would like to get some, but I have a hard time conceptualizing a chicken smaller than this.
If anybody owns some, I would love some photos for comparison!

Someone PLEASE help me. I am going to lose my entire flock. I am so upset right now. My absolute favourite hen is sick right now.

Yesterday I had a hen who had the exact same symptoms and I found her dead. Please someone help me. I don’t know what to do

-lethargic, depressed. Not doing anything when free ranging.
-runny, whitish/yellowish poop, all down back feathers
-standing still all day.

Please. My 6 month old hen died and now my 1.5 year old has the same symptoms. I don’t want to lose them.

She laid an egg today.

General Question Scared For Chickens & Other Birds This Summer

I have heard from some news outlets that there is a Suoer El Nino forming, which will raise temperatures down here in Australia. This has concerned me and raised my anxieties on keeping my birds safe and cool. I love my birds to death, and i know that I should keep them in shade and with water at all times. However, I'm scared it wont be enough to help, what els can I do and/or what would lessen my anxiety? Thank you!!

Chicken arrived looking very different than advertised. Missing a lot of feathers! Will be asking for a refund!!!

Lmao jokes aside, it’s molting season y’all! Some of our feathered babies are getting hit HARD so don’t forget to shower them with extra protein and extra love! 💕

Context: chicken #1 just finished molting, chicken #2 is in the middle of her molt.

General Question What do i do?

Ok. I have a hen that hatched 1 chick. Its her first. She had another clutch of eggs early summer but didn't end up with any chicks. So my problem is my chickens are in my barn. My chickens i have are laying in the nest boxes and there was 1 egg in the corner of 1 area of the barn. She has the problem that even with a week old chick she is still claiming eggs and sitting on them along with the chick. She got the chick in a nest box 18 inches of the floor. The only thing i can think of is to put her in one of my big pens away from any future eggs.

General Question Anyone in South Florida?

Hello!

I've had my chickens for almost 4 years now and I've run into a situation where in the next year I won't be able to keep them. They have been amazing layers for the past 3 years and I would hate for them to end up with someone who doesn't appreciate that (uses them for food).

I wanted to see if there are any fellow chicken keepers in the south Florida area that would like to enrich their current flock? I am not selling, just hopefully finding a nice home.

I have 5 hens, “Easter Eggers”.

Health Question Lethargic hen passing (presumably) egg membrane? NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I apologize for the multiple posts. I wanted to include this photo because I feel it’s an important add on, but wanted to ensure I could keep the NSFW tag as per the rules so I made a new post.

I had a lethargic hen pass suddenly. Her only 2 symptoms were being depressed/off to the side, and runny white/yellowish poops. She was like this for about 24 hours then passed. I felt I didn’t even have a chance to figure out what was wrong with her.

If you saw my erratic/panicked post earlier this afternoon, you’ll know I now have another hen exhibiting the same symptoms a day later. Just now (8pm), I went to check on her in the coop and noticed what looks like a soft egg shell hanging from her vent. I examined it a bit to make sure whatever it was wasn’t connected to her, then lightly pulled it and it popped right out. This is a Noiran hen, she lays dark chocolate eggs, so this is presumably the membrane and not so much the actual soft shell (given the white colour). She had already laid an egg today, her usual massive one, probably a double yolker like the queen she is.

I am going to call the vet tomorrow morning because I’d like to know what this mysterious illness is… unless I just happened to have two egg bound hens in 24 hours. Which is super odd.

Health Question Chicken first aid kit?

Thumbnail

This is my first time having a flock of chickens. I so badly want to give my feather babies a healthy and happy life. I vaccinated for Marek’s and will do New Castle bronchitis as well as fowlpox when they are a bit older. I’d feel more at ease having a chicken first aid kit on hand because I know illnesses are bound to happen. What would you recommend I add to this kit?

General Question Chicken won’t lay eggs

Thumbnail

Hi all! I’m looking for advice on what may be wrong with my chicken. My husband and I just bought our first home and the sellers left their chicken and coop. I’ve been wanting chickens so I was really excited, however the chicken they left (whom I’ve named Henrietta), hasn’t laid any eggs. The previous owners told me she hadn’t laid eggs in months and they thought she’d been molting because she’s constantly shedding feathers and still is. I deep cleaned her coop, got her a proper waterer, got her a dust bath, and sprinkled diatomaceous earth around her coop and run just to be safe. I didn’t see any mites though. I’ve also been adding seasoning that helps kill parasites to her feed. I want to get more chickens, but I’m nervous to get any if she has worms or parasites. I haven’t seen any worms in her poop though. This is my first chicken and I honestly don’t know what to do. She hasn’t let me grab her yet to inspect her, she’s very feisty.

Breed ID Any ideas?

I lost my flock back in May to a fox and I’ve been rebuilding and reinforcing my coop and enclosure ever since. I finally was ready to get some new hens and my boss overheard that I was looking for hens and he had these 4 pullets that he hatched from his backyard flock. I have no idea what breeds he has and I’m sure they’re all mixtures but I just wondered what you all think if you had to take a good guess?

He’s a pretty great boss. I offered to take some older girls off his hands and instead, he gave me these girls after he and his wife raised them all summer. They’re beautiful! I’m just curious as to what breeds you all think they are?

Also- OBSESSED WITH THE BLUE ONE!!!

Breed ID What color are these feral chickens

They're probably some kind of game breed. How do you describe their feather colors? Wheaten? Duckwing?

There are currently 20 chickens on site including all chicks, so I'd like to be able to describe them accurately. Even information on whether hen 1 should be called brown or cream or something else would be great 😂

Red (rooster 1 and hen 1) are the two original chickens. They've had 2 batches of chicks, indicated in blue. First batch is 1 rooster and 3 hens, second batch is 4 cockerels and 4 pullets. One of the hens from first batch has her own chicks now (green).

Blue batch 1 (from hen 1) had white eggs. Wasn't able to find any subsequent eggs.

So far all the cockerels from blue batch 2 are developing the same white head as rooster 2, none look like rooster 1.

The number of babies to adolescent chickens doesn't match because a coyote took about half of the first batch :(
