Once, one of them took my finger almost down to the knuckle when she missed a blueberry.
My imagination is good enough to scale this up to a T-rex, I wanna travel back in time now.

(love the 5th pic the most, she is the boss & the other is 2IC)

Health Question Sick chickens

A little update on my posts from yesterday regarding my flock that is likely experiencing a cocciodosis outbreak.

Vet had me drop fecal samples at the lab and said for now it’s better to wait for results because treating for cocciodosis can be more harmful than good if not positive.

I have my sweet girl in a kennel in my front storage room. She’s got a blanket for darkness, bedding, and even her own space heater.

She seems a bit uncomfortable, but I’ve noticed her drinking and she did eat some egg yolk, scrambled egg with cottage cheese, and a little bit of her layer feed today.

I noticed today after eating the egg she leaned down and clear liquid came from her beak…. No sour crop or crop issues I think, so I’m not sure if this just meant she ate too fast/too much and just happened to tilt forward… or what.

I am wondering if there’s anything else I can do for my girl to keep her comfortable while she battles this. Whatever it is, I hope she can be strong until I get results from the lab and can treat her accordingly.

Health Question Help!

Post image

Just went outside to collect eggs and found this girlie sleeping weirdly on the cement. All her feathers are gone from her head and her comb looks damaged. Also I don't see any other injuries on her. Just the head area. Myself and my family spend quite a bit of time with them and haven't noticed anything wrong with them yesterday. She is making noise and seems to be alert and normal now but have separated her from the others. Dry fowl pox? Bird flu? Animal attack? My dog came with me on errands this morning so wasn't protecting the yard like normal. What do you guys think? Also we are located inland NSW if that helps

General Question Newbie with cold weather prep questions

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for your help! I've learned so much from all your posts, now it's my turn to ask a few questions- I only have 4 birds (legal limit inside the city) with a small coop and covered run. My girls are about 6 months old and happy as can be for now, but the weather is changing quickly and the nights are getting cold. I'm in southern MN and winter can be brutal.

Question #1- At what temperature do you start turning on coop heaters for your birds?

Question #2- What do you use to enclose and insulate your run during the winter?

Question #3- With shorter daylight, should I have light in the coop?

General Question I have another chicken in my yard...

A little while ago, I posted about my neighbor's chicken getting out and into my yard. It's still there, and another random chicken showed up last week that isn't my neighbor's. My coop is going up tomorrow, will try to lure them in. I've selected a spot the dogs can't see them. Wish me luck and please spread advice like feed!

Health Question What should I do? I’ve never heard this cough before

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

This is the first time I’ve heard one of my chickens cough like this. She did it a couple times. I actually thought someone was being pecked at first. She won’t let me look down her throat to see if there are tapeworms, but no sign of them in her poop by the naked eye.

Symptoms:
Wheezing, crazy cough three times
Empty feeling crop
Normal enough looking poop
Willingly ate raw egg
No noticeable swelling of her head
No discharge from the eyes
Sneezed a bit of gunk from her nose
Not lethargic
I may have noticed her a bit puffed up randomly in the past, but energy levels have been normal
Still hasn’t laid first egg, born in late may
I’ve not noticed symptoms in other chickens
No observed neurological symptoms

I have antibiotics on hand, should I just go ahead and treat the flock?

Thank you

General Question Chicken run floor question

Hi all! First time chicken owner here. I built my coop in my backyard on grass. They’ve eaten all that grass now of course. What is best to use over the dirt? I have 4 bags of mulch and have read that is one good option. Any words of advice for a newbie that just wants the best for my gals?

Thank you

Coops etc. How to fix water damage on coop

Thumbnail

My coop (OverEz Coop) has water damage along the front and pretty severely. I think it's possible for a raccoon to break this off, or at least will be soon. I am horrible with repairs, tools...you name it. I wouldn't know how to replace the whole board so am thinking maybe I can somehow curve a piece of hardware cloth , say halfway down the door, going around the water damaged area and a few inches or so past? (Using staples and washers to keep it on?) Thoughts?

The water damage is the brownish portion on the front in the close-up photo. I would say it goes about two inches back. For the record, I never, ever use that door for egg collecting and just keep it locked.

Health Question Loss of a new one.

I don't hatch chickens normally but I have three healthy ones in the incubator and one that just died. I feel terrible because it had been attempting to get out of its shell for over 36hrs. A bit of the beak was showing and the other chicks pecked at the shell in encouragement.

Could I have done anything or was the death inevitable.

General Question I built a free incubation tracker that covers ducks, geese, turkeys, quail and guineas, not just chickens. Looking for feedback from people who hatch

Hi all,

(Posting here based on reddit's recommendation, please say if i should delete it)

I built Hatch Day, an Android app where you set a clutch and it shows what the eggs need that day. But I'm a developer, not a poultry farmer so I need feedback from target audience.

What it does:

\- Day counter and countdown for each clutch

\- Today's temperature and humidity targets (°C or °F)

\- Turning reminders at times you pick, and when to stop turning

\- Candling days, lockdown and the hatch window on one timeline

\- Cooling and misting days for waterfowl

\- 11 species built in (chicken, duck, Muscovy, goose, turkey, Coturnix, bobwhite, guinea, pheasant, partridge, peafowl) plus a custom profile

\- Works offline, no account

The free version tracks one hatch at a time. Pro adds multiple incubators, a candling log, temp/humidity logging and hatch-rate stats.

Most hatching charts assume chickens: 21 days, done. Muscovies (35 days), geese, and bobwhite vs Coturnix quail each have their own schedule, and that usually means digging through university extension PDFs. The targets come from incubator makers and university poultry guides. Your incubator's manual and a calibrated thermometer still come first.

What I'd really like to hear:

  1. For those of you hatching waterfowl or game birds: do the humidity and lockdown numbers match what has worked for you?

  2. Is there a species or step I'm missing?

Play Store: [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mintwave.hatchday\](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mintwave.hatchday)

I'll answer questions in the comments, and I'm happy to fix anything that's wrong.

Coops etc. How many inches apart do you put your washers/screws?

On your coop, how many inches apart do you place each washer and screw? (Over hardware cloth) I'm trying to really reinforce my coop since I have a family of raccoons.

Her Silkie sister was snatched up by a raccoon the other night. Now she is roosting on the fence for the first time in her life. Smart of her to make the correlation “high up means no hurt” ☹️

General Question Are chickens less tame if they're at the bottom of the pecking order?

Our pecking order lines up exactly with how tame they are, which may or may not be a coincidence... Could it be that hens who get picked on a bit by the flock are more skittish or less tame? I'm wondering whether it's just random in my case or whether there's actually a connection. Has anyone had similar (or different) experiences?
