question Does my root-canaled molar really need to be extracted?

Hi everyone, I’m in Portugal and my dentist says one of my molars is “dead” and needs to be extracted.

I had a root canal in 2015, but the filling broke/chipped out in 2022. I neglected it, and over the years it developed a large cavity.

Is extraction really necessary, or could they clean the decay, redo the root canal if needed, and rebuild the tooth with a filling/crown?

I’m thinking about getting a second opinion from an endodontist before extracting it. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Thanks!

question Went From 0 to 6 Cavities in One Year. Looking for a Second Opinion

I recently went to the dentist for a routine checkup after about a year and was told I needed 6 fillings.

For some background, I smoke here and there, don't drink alcohol, brush twice a day, and floss regularly.

The dentist pointed out one cavity that was noticeable, but for the other 5, he seemed to rely mostly on the AI software analyzing my X-rays rather than examining those areas himself.

I'd appreciate a second opinion from any dentists here on whether all 6 fillings are actually necessary based on my X-rays. Thanks!

question advice on impacted 2nd molar and 1st molar cavity :(

Hello all i am 21F and have been hesitant to address my teeth concerns because of financial difficulty and dental anxiety because of lack of access to dental care until i was an adult. I have seen 2 dentists and gotten different treatment plans after i started to take care of my teeth. (i got many of the inter-proximal cavities filled already but haven’t addressed my worst cavity yet :(

I am wondering if my 1st and 2nd molar is saveable and how treatment could be approached. :(

A corporate dentist had advised to pull my wisdom tooth, pull my 2nd impacted molar and the 1st molar with the cavity and do 2 implants. I am concerned since I am young that getting implants would be last resort after trying to save the tooth and exhausting that option so young would not be the best choice even if it would cost “less”

I got a second opinion from another dentist (private practice) who is out of my price range. He recommended me to remove the wisdom tooth and get treatment to straighten the impacted 2nd molar before treatment can be done to root canal and crown the 1st molar that has a cavity. This plan would attempt to save all my teeth but there is no guarantee that by the time my 2nd molar straightens that my 1st molar would still be savable. and it would be quite costly.

Is there any other options or alternatives? like extracting the 2nd molar or 1st molar only? Or opinions on the treatment plans? I understand that my teeth and health are very important so I will try my best to do whats best for the long term health of them. Thank you in advance for the time.

question What is this?

I’ve just got home from the hospital with my daughter. We were in there for 24 hours as she told me her ear was sore and when I looked behind her lobe there was a hard lump. A few different test results later we were told it’s a swollen lymph node. Now the tooth. 5 days ago my daughter was knocked in the mouth at school and it shifted her front baby tooth and it was loose. Today she but into something and the tooth fell out but this is left behind? Could it be an infection and that’s caused the swollen lymph nodes? Does this need a dental visit? Happy to take her but after 24 hours in hospital she is exhausted. Attached a photo of the lump behind her ear just for reference. Thanks everyone 🙏

Hi. Yesterday i had very sore inflamed gums. I rinced my mouth with salt water. Then this morning i woke up with a red lump. No pain however a sore lymph node under jaw. Nothing major. During the day its gotten less red and more translucent with some yellow.

Im here, to ask for advice or any help because its impossible to see a dentist. Im in Latin America and just not possible.

Will it pop? Get worse?

Any advice is appreciated.

Im a massive panicker so that doesnt help. Lol

question New Dentist says #31 nerve may be dying based on shadow on this Xray. Tooth doesn't hurt. Is this accurate?

Post image

31M, This completely came out of nowhere. Tooth is asymptomatic, never felt anything from it. I felt the cold test but it was slightly delayed so the tooth is at least vital? He said there is a 5mm pocket on the back side of the tooth, wisdom teeth were out in 2013. This new dentist says he's 99% sure this tooth needs RCT. I am going back for the closer Xray image and second opinion from another dentist in a few days. Is this dentist right or should i be skeptical? Thanks in advance

question Normal gums for a 6yrs old?

Please be kind. We don’t have dental insurance yet so I resorted here.

Is my 5.11years old son’s gums normal? I think it looks puffy but I have no one to compare it to. Two permanent teeth are erupting, while the upper teeth were knocked off due to an accidental fall last March. Teeth aren’t coming out yet.

Are the gums normal or puffy?

Omg, is this another cavity??

If it is, is the treatment significantly gentler than my last 4 fillings that I could put the tip of my fingernail into?

question Cosmetic crown lengthening after orthodontic braces questions

• Upvotes

I recently got my braces off, and I’ve been looking into cosmetic crown lengthening to correct my gummy smile (caused by excessive gum tissue).

Is there a recommended waiting period between getting my braces removed and undergoing crown lengthening (e.g., to allow any swelling from the braces to subside)?

Would I need new retainers after the crown lengthening procedure? Can I wear my retainers soon after the procedure (currently wearing retainers 24/7)?

question Post molar extraction - 2 weeks

Hi, I had gotten a molar extraction on teeth 31 done on October 1st, the blood clot was relatively low and I had went on the 6th to check it again at the dentist and they said to give it some more time. Today I went again to the dentist (day 15) and they said it could have been either delayed healing or d_y s___t - although I did not get the symptoms of d_y s___t and there wasn’t any bone showing, due to taking contraceptive Yaz for my PCOS. today they had cleaned it, put some gel and also some suture / stitches that they said it would dissolve on its own within a week. They said I can potentially still get d__ s_____ although it would be highly unlikely; they gave me gauze pads but I am not bleeding to put in any.

I would like to know if anyone has had a similar situation? Is there still a risk of getting d__ s_____ if I passed the 2 week initial window, or because another clot is forming it is again likely??

question Worried? How bad is this?

I'm ashamed to say I don't visit the dentist as regularly as I should. I've been feeling an on and off ache on my molar. I checked to see and was shocked to find a discoloration I've never noticed before. My teeth are pretty jacked up so please don't judge. Is this a cavity/decay? How cooked am I?

other Hollow tooth started loosening up

Hello, I am writing this because I am a huge hypochondriac and I need someone to tell me if I should be worried or not.

So last year I had a root canal treatment done on a tooth in the back of my mouth. The dentists didn't close the hole and so my tooth has been hollow for like a year, I didn't go back to the dentist in that time because I became homeless and I didn't have time to worry about that.

Now the tooth is starting to get loose a little, I'm not in any pain, nothing is red or anything, it's just very loose. I'm going to the emergency dentist tomorrow but I'm just really scared, can anyone tell me if they've ever seen this kind of situation and if I should be worried? I'm mostly afraid to get a sepsis or any other kind of infection or anything

question Is prolonged tooth sensitivity normal after getting crowns?

(xrays shown here are from before I got the crowns)

Hello,

I am going to attempt to make a long story short but want to give as much context as possible.

When I was 7 or 8 years old, I experienced a head trauma that knocked my two front teeth loose right after getting my adult teeth. The teeth were left to heal on their own and one of them died and became grey.

I (now 26) finally just finished getting them fixed after a long journey of invisalign/teeth whitening/prep. I got the temporary crowns two weeks ago. In the prep for the crowns, the dentist shaved the teeth quite a bit, as expected. While I was wearing the temp crowns, I experienced a bit of temperature sensitivty and discomfort with only one of my teeth (the front right tooth). It has been sensitive to cool air even and sometimes hurts for an hour or so after eating. I assumed this was just because the crowns were temporary and not very sturdy yet.

Today, I got my permanent crowns placed. I expressed the discomfort I have been experiencing to my dentist and he said that it should get better with the real crowns since they are thicker and stronger. Makes sense to me. But after my numbing wore off today, I started to feel the discomfort coming back pretty strongly. And drinking cold water right now is very much uncomfortable. I assume the nerve is irritated from the procedure... but my other tooth feels completely fine. And the one that feels fine is the one that was dead!

So now I am getting concerned and hoping that this isn't something I will have to deal with forever.

I feel I should also mention that I got a root canal done back in high school on the dead tooth (front left tooth) in an attempt to lighten the color and avoid infection. A couple years ago I went to see a dentist about a consult on fixing that tooth and he showed me that the root on my other tooth (front right, the one thats been hurting) has a very short root that could cause issues in the future. Another dentist told me the tooth was fine.

I don't know. I certainly am no expert, but I feel I have gotten inconsistent takes on my situation so just thought I'd share here and see what any professionals had to say. Or anyone that may have expereinced what I am experiencing.

question Heavy bleeding and dizziness after molar extraction yesterday. Is this normal?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I got a cracked molar removed yesterday around 12:00 PM. After going home, the bleeding wouldn't stop, and I felt very dizzy. It finally started calming down around 8:00 PM.
The heavy bleeding has stopped, but there is still old blood and a large blood clot around the extraction site today. I have since rinsed my mouth out gently. The pain has been mostly gone since yesterday, only feeling a slight twinge here and there, but it doesn't really hurt now. Is everything healing ? Is this a bloodclot should I remove it ? What do i do ?

19 YR M. so basically around the start of last month i started noticing my voice starting to get weaker and started to get like a different tone i would say and like i kinda had to speak up a little bit ,then like it started to the point where i can’t really sing or rap anymore( im a artist)
so i kinda just brushed it off but really once this month started symptoms started getting worse i would say i kinda started troubling swallowing things fully like at first i can initate the swallow and it would go down but it just would feel like something’s still in my throat, then over the past couple days my voice started getting drastically weaker and more hoarse and raspy i would say there’s some times i can speak up a lil but not like i have before and initiating the swallow now is more difficult i would say and food and liquid goes down slower and it leaves like a stuck feeling in my throat and i have to like double swallow, but idk if my lymph nodes or swollen or not but like the sides of neck feel kinda firm and the middle of my throat like right below my chin, just would appreciate you guys opinions and observations

question What is happening to my wisdom tooth?

Post image

It’s been sensitive for a little while. I wouldn’t say it hurts, but it’s definitely a strange sensation. I brush 2, sometimes 3 times a day depending on what I eat. When I position my head at certain angles like if I bend down I can feel it. Just an odd sensation. How did it get like this?

question scared to extract first right bottom molar because of appearance reasons

So I've been doing a hell of an extensive research on this, and I've been reading a lot of mixed experiences regarding what happens to your face in the long term when a first molar is removed. Others say it does not change anything while others say the opposite. Though, my dentist told me that after a week of extraction I should get a plastic denture for it, then after a month, a flexible one.

Im scared, will it really cause my face to change in the long term, and will the flexible dentures be good enough to eat everyday food, thank you.

question Sore spot on gums, only hurts when brushing

Post image
2 Upvotes

24F, I don’t smoke or drink. No medical conditions of note. Gums are relatively healthy otherwise. I noticed it was a bit sore about a day ago, and ended up brushing pretty hard. Like title says, it really only hurts (and bleeds) when brushing, there’s no pain when I clench my teeth or eat/drink. What could it be? 😓
