question Does my root-canaled molar really need to be extracted?

Hi everyone, I’m in Portugal and my dentist says one of my molars is “dead” and needs to be extracted.

I had a root canal in 2015, but the filling broke/chipped out in 2022. I neglected it, and over the years it developed a large cavity.

Is extraction really necessary, or could they clean the decay, redo the root canal if needed, and rebuild the tooth with a filling/crown?

I’m thinking about getting a second opinion from an endodontist before extracting it. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Thanks!

question Post molar extraction - 2 weeks

• Upvotes

Hi, I had gotten a molar extraction on teeth 31 done on October 1st, the blood clot was relatively low and I had went on the 6th to check it again at the dentist and they said to give it some more time. Today I went again to the dentist (day 15) and they said it could have been either delayed healing or d_y s___t - although I did not get the symptoms of d_y s___t and there wasn’t any bone showing, due to taking contraceptive Yaz for my PCOS. today they had cleaned it, put some gel and also some suture / stitches that they said it would dissolve on its own within a week. They said I can potentially still get d__ s_____ although it would be highly unlikely; they gave me gauze pads but I am not bleeding to put in any.

I would like to know if anyone has had a similar situation? Is there still a risk of getting d__ s_____ if I passed the 2 week initial window, or because another clot is forming it is again likely??

question Worried? How bad is this?

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm ashamed to say I don't visit the dentist as regularly as I should. I've been feeling an on and off ache on my molar. I checked to see and was shocked to find a discoloration I've never noticed before. My teeth are pretty jacked up so please don't judge. Is this a cavity/decay? How cooked am I?

other Hollow tooth started loosening up

• Upvotes

Hello, I am writing this because I am a huge hypochondriac and I need someone to tell me if I should be worried or not.

So last year I had a root canal treatment done on a tooth in the back of my mouth. The dentists didn't close the hole and so my tooth has been hollow for like a year, I didn't go back to the dentist in that time because I became homeless and I didn't have time to worry about that.

Now the tooth is starting to get loose a little, I'm not in any pain, nothing is red or anything, it's just very loose. I'm going to the emergency dentist tomorrow but I'm just really scared, can anyone tell me if they've ever seen this kind of situation and if I should be worried? I'm mostly afraid to get a sepsis or any other kind of infection or anything

question Is prolonged tooth sensitivity normal after getting crowns?

(xrays shown here are from before I got the crowns)

Hello,

I am going to attempt to make a long story short but want to give as much context as possible.

When I was 7 or 8 years old, I experienced a head trauma that knocked my two front teeth loose right after getting my adult teeth. The teeth were left to heal on their own and one of them died and became grey.

I (now 26) finally just finished getting them fixed after a long journey of invisalign/teeth whitening/prep. I got the temporary crowns two weeks ago. In the prep for the crowns, the dentist shaved the teeth quite a bit, as expected. While I was wearing the temp crowns, I experienced a bit of temperature sensitivty and discomfort with only one of my teeth (the front right tooth). It has been sensitive to cool air even and sometimes hurts for an hour or so after eating. I assumed this was just because the crowns were temporary and not very sturdy yet.

Today, I got my permanent crowns placed. I expressed the discomfort I have been experiencing to my dentist and he said that it should get better with the real crowns since they are thicker and stronger. Makes sense to me. But after my numbing wore off today, I started to feel the discomfort coming back pretty strongly. And drinking cold water right now is very much uncomfortable. I assume the nerve is irritated from the procedure... but my other tooth feels completely fine. And the one that feels fine is the one that was dead!

So now I am getting concerned and hoping that this isn't something I will have to deal with forever.

I feel I should also mention that I got a root canal done back in high school on the dead tooth (front left tooth) in an attempt to lighten the color and avoid infection. A couple years ago I went to see a dentist about a consult on fixing that tooth and he showed me that the root on my other tooth (front right, the one thats been hurting) has a very short root that could cause issues in the future. Another dentist told me the tooth was fine.

I don't know. I certainly am no expert, but I feel I have gotten inconsistent takes on my situation so just thought I'd share here and see what any professionals had to say. Or anyone that may have expereinced what I am experiencing.

question Pain one week after dental bridge prep: do I DEFINITELY need a root canal?

• Upvotes

Did a bridge prep 7 days ago, and beforehand the dentist was clear that there’s a chance I’d need a root canal in case he hit a nerve. Is it normal to have mild throbbing pain 7 days after the prep? I’ve been popping ibuprofen to manage, but today I decided to not have any because I wanted to see if I could tolerate the discomfort (which I can, but it still isn’t pleasant).

I went back two days for him to look at it and he said there’s a bit of puss, so decent odds I’ll need one. I really don’t want to stomach two intense sessions for a root canal and then another third session for the final bridge.

Just went for the first time in at least 10 years due to some pain. Other than #16 which was the culprit for my toothache, any obvious issues?

question Pain while waiting for endontist appt

• Upvotes

I have a tooth that may or may not be salvageable with a root canal but it’s painful. I guess exposed nerve.

I’m on antibiotics for a week but pain keeps surging.

What is best route to kill pain? Anbesol? Brushing after I eat ? Mouthwash? Ibuprofen?

Should I request stronger painkiller? I need to suffer a full week …

I was brushing my teeth and I noticed one of them had this spot. It was never there before and no matter how many times I tried brushing it, it won’t go away. I’m worried now and I’m wondering if this is a cavity that I need to take care of?

question Bone graft after wisdom teeth extraction?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, I need some advice whether or not I should get bone graft for some of my molars if I remove my 4 wisdom teeth (no pain just wanted them out). I would get bone graft for all 4 molars as the oral surgeon suggested, but he said it's $800 each and not covered by insurance :((. He also said I should get another scan so he can have a better look since my lower left wisdom tooth (I think) is close to a nerve, which is another $200...

I'm 24 F. Working part time so I don't have the money to graft all 4 teeth + hv another scan. The xray I posted is from my general dentist office so not the exact one the oral surgeon looked at. I'd appreciate any advice and insight!!

Embarrassed to even be posting this here but I had this red patch come up inside my cheek on 10/05. I thought it was just trauma from teeth but now it’s gotten a bit worse. Working on getting the fund for a dentist. But in the mean time I thought this wouldn’t hurt. One picture is from where I first noticed, second is today.

question Tooth infection

Post image
• Upvotes

My two year old daughter slipped in the tub and hit her mouth ultimately pushing her teeth up into her gums. They re-impacted and unfortunately she developed an abscess and needs them pulled. Pediatric dentist is saying both front teeth need to come out but our family dentist looked over the xray and says he sees no infection on the one tooth and doesn’t see a reason why it needs to be pulled but the other one for sure. I know the xray is kind of blurry but what decision seems right? Any guidance is appreciated.

question Cavity or chipped tooth?

Post image
• Upvotes

So I was brushing my teeth like 3 weeks ago and saw this, and I dismissed it because it wasn’t causing pain, and I had no reason to suspect a cavity as I’ve had the same cleaning routine for years and no cavities. Now at that time, I had been eating lifesaver mints (I bite them into pieces, I don’t suck) so I thought that could be a factor.

Sometimes it’s sensitive for a millisecond when I blow cold air into it, or when I put my wet toothpaste on it first without starting my brushing anywhere else first. It doesn’t hurt when I eat anything besides sometimes when I eat red chips ahoy for whatever reason.

I have a dentist check up in like 1.5 weeks, which I was supposed to have my 6-month appointment like 2 months ago, but it kept getting pushed back

question Second opinion: can upper wisdom teeth cause chronic rhinitis? Orthopedist says yes, dentist says no

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Body:

TL;DR: An orthopedist told me I must remove my wisdom teeth because they supposedly cause my chronic rhinitis. A dentist says there’s no evidence for that and refuses to remove them. Who’s right?

Background

  • 31M, from Argentina
  • Chronic rhinitis since birth. I had a septoplasty (deviated septum surgery) and still have trouble breathing through my nose
  • Severe bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • I went to an orthopedist/traumatologist for back and neck pain from sitting a lot. He ordered a shoulder and cervical MRI (small cervical disc herniations, which he said are insignificant) and a panoramic dental X-ray, which he insisted I get

Conflicting opinions

  • Orthopedist: I must have my wisdom teeth removed. Because of their position they will never erupt, and he says they are the cause of my rhinitis. He sounded very convinced.
  • Dentist (specialist, recommended by the same orthopedist): He would not remove them under any circumstances, since there’s no scientific evidence that wisdom teeth cause or worsen rhinitis.

My questions

  1. Is there any real link between upper wisdom teeth and rhinitis or nasal breathing problems (e.g., proximity to the maxillary sinus)?
  2. Looking at the panoramic X-ray, do you see any dental reason to extract them (position, cavity risk, cysts, damage to adjacent teeth)?
  3. Could they be related to my bruxism, or is that unrelated?
  4. What would you recommend before deciding: CBCT scan, ENT evaluation, allergist?

I’m attaching the full panoramic X-ray and zoomed-in crops of each side. I know online opinions don’t replace an in-person exam, but I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

What does this look like? I do smoke a lot of weed and used to smoke oil but almost explicitly smoke bud. My tongue hurts from what I think is more rubbing against my teeth, and under my tongue has dark reddish purple veins that are small.

Please help

question Do I need to get my wisdom teeth removed? Concerned!

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey guys this is an X-ray of my teeth. I went to the dentist to get a wisdom teeth consultation, and the dentist said in his professional opinion to get all 4 removed. Now I know what you're probably thinking, "Why bother asking on Reddit if your dentist said to get them removed?" Well, I'm asking here because you guys are able to provide me the most honest answer, as I'm not a client you're trying to earn money from, but just a fellow reddit user with concerns. I understand the bottom tooth on the right side of my mouth is impacted, but what about the other teeth? Are they necessarily causing problems or going to cause any problems further down the track? And also, why is my left side wisdom teeth relatively okay? (At least from my view on the X-ray, they don't seem impacted and appear to be growing correctly, but my right side, the bottom seems to be impacted, and the top is slightly on an angle).

The dentist quoted me $2,000 AUD for all 4 removed under local anasthesia, which is especially why I want to think this through before going forwards, as it's quite pricey for a 19 year old.

Finally, is it okay to get my wisdom teeth removed while wearing braces? Like, it won't impact treatment times?

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to your responses!

question New crowns too big?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Got new crowns a week ago on tooth 8 and 9, and they just feel and look so big to me, and like they kinda turn in towards each other. Granted, mostly of my teeth are pretty worn down, I've had bad teeth since I was a baby, bad enamel, worn down, pretty severe tmj. So these new crowns just look so big compared to my other teeth. My gums still feel kinda swollen and the crowns are cold sensitive. They're also making me talk with a lisp a little bit. Is that normal? I've already had them shortened a little, but I don't know what to do now.

question Crown cold sensitivity

• Upvotes

I had a crown place beginning of June on my back upper molar. The tooth cracked and they decided a crown without a root canal was the best option.

About a month after went in for an adjustment because I was having cold sensitivity. That helped a little but, it came back. The sensitivity is only one side of the tooth. They said the margins are closed. It’s gets sharp when something cold touches it but goes away right after the cold is removed.

I sometimes get pressure around the tooth. For some background I wear a night guard due grinding. I think the pressure is from grinding my teeth.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what to do? The dentist that did it is rude and honestly I hate going there. I’ve looked into other places and probably changing dentist soon.

Thanks!
