question Does my root-canaled molar really need to be extracted?

Hi everyone, I’m in Portugal and my dentist says one of my molars is “dead” and needs to be extracted.

I had a root canal in 2015, but the filling broke/chipped out in 2022. I neglected it, and over the years it developed a large cavity.

Is extraction really necessary, or could they clean the decay, redo the root canal if needed, and rebuild the tooth with a filling/crown?

I’m thinking about getting a second opinion from an endodontist before extracting it. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Thanks!

question What is this?

I’ve just got home from the hospital with my daughter. We were in there for 24 hours as she told me her ear was sore and when I looked behind her lobe there was a hard lump. A few different test results later we were told it’s a swollen lymph node. Now the tooth. 5 days ago my daughter was knocked in the mouth at school and it shifted her front baby tooth and it was loose. Today she but into something and the tooth fell out but this is left behind? Could it be an infection and that’s caused the swollen lymph nodes? Does this need a dental visit? Happy to take her but after 24 hours in hospital she is exhausted. Attached a photo of the lump behind her ear just for reference. Thanks everyone 🙏

question Cosmetic crown lengthening after orthodontic braces questions

I recently got my braces off, and I’ve been looking into cosmetic crown lengthening to correct my gummy smile (caused by excessive gum tissue).

Is there a recommended waiting period between getting my braces removed and undergoing crown lengthening (e.g., to allow any swelling from the braces to subside)?

Would I need new retainers after the crown lengthening procedure? Can I wear my retainers soon after the procedure (currently wearing retainers 24/7)?

question Is the root fractured or not?

Post image
• Upvotes

Broke a molar while eating. The doctor's appointment is on Saturday and the xray is out. She said this xray would determine if we are gonna remove the molar because the root fractured along the molar or keep it and put support then a crown on top. Can someone tell me if it's fractured or not?

Don't drink or smoke and not on any medication.

question Post molar extraction - 2 weeks

Hi, I had gotten a molar extraction on teeth 31 done on October 1st, the blood clot was relatively low and I had went on the 6th to check it again at the dentist and they said to give it some more time. Today I went again to the dentist (day 15) and they said it could have been either delayed healing or d_y s___t - although I did not get the symptoms of d_y s___t and there wasn’t any bone showing, due to taking contraceptive Yaz for my PCOS. today they had cleaned it, put some gel and also some suture / stitches that they said it would dissolve on its own within a week. They said I can potentially still get d__ s_____ although it would be highly unlikely; they gave me gauze pads but I am not bleeding to put in any.

I would like to know if anyone has had a similar situation? Is there still a risk of getting d__ s_____ if I passed the 2 week initial window, or because another clot is forming it is again likely??

question Dentist says I have bone loss but didn't elaborate. How bad is it?

Post image
• Upvotes

I recently moved and got a new dentist. She told me that I have bone loss (I am in my late 20s). This is the first time I have ever been told this. I didn't have the chance to ask follow up questions regarding it. I also had a gum test with about 40% being 4s and 5s and 60% being 2s and 3s.

How concerning does this look? Do I need a specialist? This is concerning to me because I have IBD (Crohn's) which has given my mouth lots of trouble. I've spent ~15 years fighting extreme gum ulcerations and general inflammation. Thankfully I've never had serious dental issues. A single filling is about all the dental work I've had.

TIA for any opinions.

question Is it normal to never see the actual dentist at my appointments?

• Upvotes

The past several times I've gone to the dentist for a cleaning the actual dentist has not examined my mouth. It's been at least two to three years since I've had anyone look in my mouth other than the hygienist. If they take X-rays then the dentist always "reads them from the other room". Is this normal??

I’m having a hard time deciding between traditional braces and Invisalign. My main goals are to correct my very minor overbite, straighten my crooked bottom front teeth, and close the small gaps near the edges of my upper teeth.

I’m confused about whether braces or Invisalign alone can fix these issues, especially the gaps caused by the shape of my teeth, or if I would also need composite bonding or IPR. I’m nervous about both procedures (composite bonding/ IPR) because they seem scary to me, and I’m wondering if there are any other alternatives that could help me achieve the results I want without needing either one. I want to make sure I understand the pros and cons of each option before committing to treatment.

question Tooth extractions- continuous bleeding

• Upvotes

Hi all!

Yesterday I went to the emergency dentist for a broken tooth. I had 2 other teeth that needed removed as well and was supposed to get them all done and the dentist said he didn’t have time. I went home and had no pain to the extraction site but all of a sudden the 2 teeth on the other side were unbearable. I went back the next morning (this morning) and got them removed. I left about 1230 and was gushing blood and changing gauze every 15 minutes or so . I went to pick up prescriptions and they gave me antibiotics I am allergic too…. So I called, they were supposed to send a new prescription and never did. So I haven’t started antibiotics yet and I am now over 10 hours post procedure. I am still bleeding a good amount and they keep telling me it is normal. After reading posts in this group it seems to not be normal. Given all the info should I be concerned about the bleeding and I have some significant swelling? I won’t have the antibiotics until tomorrow sometime and one side of my face is pretty swollen. I’ve kept gauze in almost the entire time because there is so much blood . Should I be concerned?

question Worried? How bad is this?

I'm ashamed to say I don't visit the dentist as regularly as I should. I've been feeling an on and off ache on my molar. I checked to see and was shocked to find a discoloration I've never noticed before. My teeth are pretty jacked up so please don't judge. Is this a cavity/decay? How cooked am I?

question bleeding gums & sharp retainer?

• Upvotes

I got my braces off today and when I got home I realized a few things that feel off but I'm not sure if im being overly anxious.

1, there are many many red irritated spots in my gums- at least 6. I attached a picture of the worst one. I just brushed my teeth for the first time since getting them off and whenever I'd spit its a decent bit bloody and hurts really bad. touching certain teeth that were polished extra also hurts pretty bad. when they polished my teeth it felt really cold and stung really bad.

2, my retainer is extremely tight on the top, like, its hard to get it in and scary hard to take out. i had to use both of my hands pulling down pretty hard with equal pressure on the retainer to get it off.

3, my retainer is sharp. i move my tongue a lot around my mouth and in the last 7 hours of wearing my retainer the centre of my tongue feels like i ate something sharp and prickly. i also have a horrible lisp from the retainer going over the complete area that the tip of my tongue sits on.

TIA for any help :D

question Filling to a root canal in one day

• Upvotes

Hi all, I went to get a filling today. My dentist was hopeful it would work and she chose that instead of a root canal. I didn’t really get much of a say, she just said it should work but in case it didn’t, I might need a root canal in the future.

I was there for about an hour. I got home & as the numbness wore off, I was in excruciating pain.

I drove back & she has just done stage 1 of a root canal.

Is this normal to have both these procedures done in one day ? She gave me 100 dollar discount but it still feels a bit annoying in terms of my money & time & pain. I suppose when she said future, i didn’t expect it would be the same day.

other Hollow tooth started loosening up

Hello, I am writing this because I am a huge hypochondriac and I need someone to tell me if I should be worried or not.

So last year I had a root canal treatment done on a tooth in the back of my mouth. The dentists didn't close the hole and so my tooth has been hollow for like a year, I didn't go back to the dentist in that time because I became homeless and I didn't have time to worry about that.

Now the tooth is starting to get loose a little, I'm not in any pain, nothing is red or anything, it's just very loose. I'm going to the emergency dentist tomorrow but I'm just really scared, can anyone tell me if they've ever seen this kind of situation and if I should be worried? I'm mostly afraid to get a sepsis or any other kind of infection or anything

question Will I have more problems after removal?

Post image
• Upvotes

I don’t drink, or smoke. I’m diabetic (type1) and take insulin, azathioprine and infliximab.

My dentist says I need crown lengthening surgery and a new crown on a back molar which is going to cost me around £1200. I asked about just having it extracted and the dentist says that he really wants me to save it as I’m going to put pressure on my other teeth and could end up with a denture in the future? Is he right?

question Do I need surgery for this or are braces enough for my upper teeth?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I'm 20 and I had a cleft (soft) palate when I was born, an avid mouth breather (Undergone surgery for it on June 2022) and my top teeth were overcrowded when I slowly grew up. I showed my partner a picture and said it was worse than he thought it would be. I've noticed my upper lip is moving upwards than normally positioned if that counts and I occasionally breathe through my mouth. I'm going to a dentist this Monday and I'm asking in advance for any issues I need to tell the doctor to.

Any advice is welcome, thank you.

Hi. Yesterday i had very sore inflamed gums. I rinced my mouth with salt water. Then this morning i woke up with a red lump. No pain however a sore lymph node under jaw. Nothing major. During the day its gotten less red and more translucent with some yellow.

Im here, to ask for advice or any help because its impossible to see a dentist. Im in Latin America and just not possible.

Will it pop? Get worse?

Any advice is appreciated.

Im a massive panicker so that doesnt help. Lol

[Sorry for the awfull image.]

question aesthetic-wise would braces make much a difference for me?

Post image
• Upvotes

just recently got under an insurance that covers EVERYTHING for me dental wise, so my mom REALLY wants to milk them dry for all they got and talked about wanting me to get braces but i REALLY dont want to get braces unless they would cause that big of a difference. i dont have xray pictures so just aesthetic wise for what's visible would they make that big of a difference? i believe my dentist MIGHT have mentioned wanting me to get braces as well but im not sure? and she said my teeth look pretty good besides the cracked teeth i had.

question trouble opening mouth at the dentist

• Upvotes

didnt know exactly how to word the title but ill just cut it short: ever since ive been a kid ive REALLY struggled to open my mouth wide. i have no problem with eating and brushing my teeth generally, but at the dentist i always have problems with opening my mouth wide enough to do near ANYTHING they need me to do. at my very first dental exam(?) when i was 7 they couldnt even get anything done cause i couldnt open my mouth wide enough so i just continued to never go to the dentist until i turned 15 and we got insurance that covered me and then very similar situation happens there where they get frustrated with me possibly because they might believe im just not trying, but i AM trying. i just psychically cannot open my mouth wide enough. i dont know what theyre actually called but when they were drilling my teeth they tried putting a wedge in the there to hold my mouth open but that wouldnt fit in my mouth, so they tried the baby one which also barley fit in my mouth. my mom believes i mightve needed a palette expander as a kid but i dont know (she said this cause i also told her how my tongue always feels like it doesnt fit in my mouth but i dont think those 2 things are related)

TLDR: mouth cant open wide and when i try it causes MAJOR pain, any guesses of what this could be? ive also never had any injuries and have never smokes or drank.

if this isnt the right place to ask feel free to lmk and/or send me to the right place ! and also if xrays would help i could possibly get some but that would be many months from now.

question White tissue/ flesh on inner lips

Thumbnail

So I have noticed recently what seems to be dead flesh or raised tissue on my inner lips. Top and bottom. Ive also been struggling with cleaning white shit off my tongue. Today I got curious and looked it up and tried to research a few possibilities. It seems that it could be bite or friction trauma because I do nibble on my inner lips quite often. I’m doing it now as I write this out. It also seems that a very mild thrush could be a possibility but, here’s the thing: I don’t experience any of the symptoms of oral thrush. Not one, besides this raised tissue. And it’s honestly not creamy nor can it be wiped off and no irritated or bleeding flesh is seen. I tried to wipe or peel it off just to be sure but no, it’s seems to be stuck to my inner lip as if it were flesh. And my tongue is also white with a bit of yellow tint. However that can’t be wiped off either and isn’t irritated or bleeding. And there isn’t these white patches anywhere else in my mouth. And I must admit i haven’t been on top of my oral hygiene recently. OH and I vape regularly and smoke occasionally. So this could be completely mundane and I just need to stop biting my lips and brush more. But I need to be certain on whether or not I should see a doctor.

question Is prolonged tooth sensitivity normal after getting crowns?

Thumbnail

(xrays shown here are from before I got the crowns)

Hello,

I am going to attempt to make a long story short but want to give as much context as possible.

When I was 7 or 8 years old, I experienced a head trauma that knocked my two front teeth loose right after getting my adult teeth. The teeth were left to heal on their own and one of them died and became grey.

I (now 26) finally just finished getting them fixed after a long journey of invisalign/teeth whitening/prep. I got the temporary crowns two weeks ago. In the prep for the crowns, the dentist shaved the teeth quite a bit, as expected. While I was wearing the temp crowns, I experienced a bit of temperature sensitivty and discomfort with only one of my teeth (the front right tooth). It has been sensitive to cool air even and sometimes hurts for an hour or so after eating. I assumed this was just because the crowns were temporary and not very sturdy yet.

Today, I got my permanent crowns placed. I expressed the discomfort I have been experiencing to my dentist and he said that it should get better with the real crowns since they are thicker and stronger. Makes sense to me. But after my numbing wore off today, I started to feel the discomfort coming back pretty strongly. And drinking cold water right now is very much uncomfortable. I assume the nerve is irritated from the procedure... but my other tooth feels completely fine. And the one that feels fine is the one that was dead!

So now I am getting concerned and hoping that this isn't something I will have to deal with forever.

I feel I should also mention that I got a root canal done back in high school on the dead tooth (front left tooth) in an attempt to lighten the color and avoid infection. A couple years ago I went to see a dentist about a consult on fixing that tooth and he showed me that the root on my other tooth (front right, the one thats been hurting) has a very short root that could cause issues in the future. Another dentist told me the tooth was fine.

I don't know. I certainly am no expert, but I feel I have gotten inconsistent takes on my situation so just thought I'd share here and see what any professionals had to say. Or anyone that may have expereinced what I am experiencing.
