Do you think Toronto would be better off today if the 1998 amalgamation had never happened?

I feel like downtown Toronto, Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke all have very different needs and priorities. What matters to someone downtown might not matter as much to someone in the suburbs.

Sometimes I wonder whether the former City of Toronto would have been better off remaining independent, rather than having its decisions shaped by the needs and priorities of the entire GTA mix of urban and suburban communities. What do you think?

If you voted for Olivia Chow in the last election but are choosing not to in this one, why?

Title says it all. The other front runner is on such an opposite side of the political spectrum. I am curious to understand people's perspectives on this.

When did off ramps become passing lanes?

Stop and go traffic on the QEW and Gardner, people constantly using the off ramp to pass others in the slow lane. Obviously making traffic much worse for everyone else, but hey, at least they get 2-3 cars ahead… 🤦‍♂️

CAMH experience?

Hi everyone! Im a 23F here. Bit of a sensitive post for me but I’m considering voluntarily visiting CAMH for addiction help this weekend. I’ve been going through a lot lately and I thought I could handle my alcohol addiction and suicidal ideations on my own but I’m clearly struggling.. I just wanted to know what I can expect coming through the ED. Wait times, what to bring/not to bring, possibilities of being admitted? I come from an immigrant family who doesn’t really understand these things so I would like for them not to find out. So I think the more prepared I am, the better I can plan my stay :). thank you for any help you can provide.

Is paying to volunteer normal?

I was looking at volunteer opportunities at the ROM and I saw that you have to pay for a membership and donate annually to qualify to volunteer there. Since when is it required to pay to volunteer? Is this normal?

Edit: this is not about orgs asking for specific skills from volunteers, this is about having to pay financially to volunteer

Question for women going through perimenopause

Hi everyone,

This is a question so I hope it’s ok to post here.

Women of Toronto, I’m not sure how you’re dealing with perimenopause but it’s really striking me down. I feel like my life is headed towards shambles and it’s affecting my work and personal life so much. I feel half the person I used to be.

Would really love if you could suggest any family doctors or clinics in the West end near High Park or Roncesvalles to help me find someone who understands perimenopause and HRT and can help me get through this.

Thank you so much!

Issue with Oasis Aqualounge regular - tired neighbour need suggestions

I am a resident of one of the buildings next to Oasis Aqualounge for about a year now, and I have to preface this by saying I’m not bother by Aqualounge or its community. I also I’m aware that living downtown comes with its own set of quirks and ocassional nuisances, but this situation has gotten out of hands.

There is this one woman who frequents their pool - at least 2 to 3 times a week, and she’s quite noisy doing it. Like obnoxiously loud, and at different times (anywhere between 5pm to 1 or 2 am).

I have tried calling 311, but they haven’t been of much help. I need suggestion of what to do, I’m sure there is some municipal code about inappropriate behavior/noises.

any suggestions are appreciated! thanks

Grange Park Oct 15 Dog Fight

This might be a silly question but we witnessed what looked like a terrible dog fight today in Grange Park around 4:30-5 pm- one dog got away from it's owner and went at two larger dogs and the sounds and screaming were all fairly scary to witness and heartbreaking as a pet owner. Does anyone know if the dogs were ok? (Obviously there were injuries but wanted to know that none of them literally died...).

Toronto Animal Shelters to volunteer at

I've been looking and it seems the main big shelters like the human society and Toronto animal services aren't looking for volunteers at the moment. I can't foster as I have a cat and don't want to upset her but I'd love to give some love to shelter animals, take some dogs for a walk, help some cats get socialized, that kind of thing. Can anyone point me to a shelter that I can offer that to? Thank you!

Did the Sunnybrook employee caught making racist remarks on the TTC work directly with patients?

One thing I haven’t seen clarified is whether this person worked directly with patients.

Does anyone know if Sunnybrook has confirmed whether the employee held a patient-facing role, such as a nurse, physician or another healthcare position?

How to enjoy life outside of downtown?

Life gets depressing. Trying to fight off the big sad.

We can spend about $500/m on fun activities, memberships, etc, but free would be even better. What do people like to do to break out of the monotony of life when you hate your job and don’t have many friends around?

Answers preferred from those not staying downtown else I’ll get suggestions like pottery classes.

Choosing a GTA university for undergraduate psychology before applying to med school

Hi everyone! I'm a grade 12 high school student and I for sure want to study psychology during my undergrad, but I'm struggling between york, utsc/utsg, and tmu.

From what I've seen so far, uoft is a gpa tanker, but york's 9.0 scale may make it harder to achieve a high gpa. I also haven't heard any outstanding reviews about TMU's psychology program. I am open to considering other unis in the GTA, so any help is appreciated!

Side note: which is better for med: BA or BSC?

I understand that a BA offers more flexibility, while a BSc may cover more of the prerequisites for medical school. Which option would be better for maintaining a high GPA while balancing psychology courses with the necessary med school prerequisites?

Go train shelter open only 3 hours

What is the point of having rail shelters at go station when it’s open only for less than 3 hours from 6:15 am - 9am. if there’s already shelters might as well make it during day time when commuters actually use it. If they’re afraid of non commuters using it for sleeping etc, can they not add a fare checker to open the doors?

Same case for the actual go station; I feel like they open as such unoptimal hours

What is life like for an adult goth in Toronto?

Just curious. I knew the big Queen West scene in the 90s / 2000s era had lots for adult goths to do, but what's it like for people who are still into that music / fashion / scene now? I dont mean kids who are still living at home and part of online communities, but actual IRL goth adults who have jobs and go out once in a while.

Torontonians, does anyone else find it weird when someone says “goodnight” as a greeting?

So I drive a TTC bus, and something happened that genuinely made my brain freeze for a second. A passenger got on and greeted me with “Goodnight!” the same way someone would say “Good morning” or “Good evening.”
And the funny thing is, I know exactly what she meant. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. But my brain associates “goodnight” with someone going to bed or saying goodbye. Every time I hear someone use it as a greeting, my brain needs a second to process it. 😂
Am I the only one who finds this strangely confusing? Or is saying “goodnight” as a greeting completely normal where you’re from?

Does anyone have recommendations for bicycle instructors in the GTA?

I'm 30 and never learned how to ride a bike. It's something I've been wanting to learn for a very very long time. I've tried to learn on a city bike but my balance is too off and I fell a lot. My 10 year old neighbour has a kiddy bike lol and we've practiced on that a little bit but the chains are all rusty and it's hard to peddle. It was a lot more comfortable than the city bike maybe because of the height

I've gone through old threads and found coach Tommy at bike foundations, I've reached out to him and now I'm just waiting for him to get back to me

I saw someone reocmmend learn 2 ride. They don't have any programs this fall/winter. I've joined their waitlist for next spring/summer but I'd rather learn now

Recommendations are so welcome. I'll continue to go through some of the other threads.

Where to buy Daawat Ultima extra long grain basmati rice?

I use to buy this rice at No Frills but they stopped carrying it two or three years ago. I've checked all the chain grocery stores including Walmart in West end/ Junction and St Clair stockyards area - no luck. It's really good rice, I've tried Tilda brand and there's no comparison. TIA

Is this normal for a family doctor

I have been getting pretty disappointed in the service our family doctor has given my family in recent times.

The lack of quality in her service is kind of alarming, she was also running a restaurant in between.

I've been having a combination of issues i wanted to see her about , but she restricts us to just one issue in the 10 minutes we are scheduled with her. Anything more would require a new appointment.

What if the issues correlate ? Just to get another appointment itself is about a few weeks wait time.

I recall when I was younger the visits were longer and tended with more care, nowadays, it seems very passive and quick.

Do any restaurants/local stores sell their own house-made kombucha?

Hello! I'm wondering if there are any restaurants or local stores that make their own kombucha and sell it. Either as a prepared drink or bottled/canned, and with any amount of alcohol. But not anything that I can find in major grocery stores. Thanks! :)

Spots with live music in the St. Lawrence market neighbourhood.

My sister is visiting from Winnipeg and really wants to catch some live music. Nothing big like a concert, but does anyone know of any local spots in the area that have live music on the weekends we can walk to?

Where did the Toronto man accent come from?

It seems like this accent just appeared out of nowhere in the 2010s, and I genuinely don’t understand how it happened. Before then, we had Toronto rappers who spoke normally and used Toronto slang, but this particular accent was never prominent.

I grew up in Toronto, and nobody I knew spoke like that. Even in the 2000s, some of the biggest hood rappers, like Camoflauge, C4, Mayhem and Sick Thugz, didn’t have this distinct “Toronto” accent.

What confuses me is that people from this generation were around during the same era, yet somehow ended up speaking completely differently. How did that transition happen? Anyone who’s 25+ seems to have no idea where this accent came from or how it developed.

How does an accent that was never prevalent in our everyday lives suddenly become such a defining part of Toronto culture?
