A bunch of fish dying at the plaza

Overheard some state employees talking to state troopers at the plaza a few minutes ago. Took a look myself and saw that OGS/the state has left a BUNCH of fish to die in the pool as it’s draining. The troopers were basically like “we can’t do anything” and didn’t really seem too engaged honestly. There’s no need to let a bunch of innocent animals die due to lack of effort or lack of creativity about what can be done. Not sure how they got there, troopers said probably a bird dropped a fish and it laid eggs or someone was being cruel and put them in there. Like I said, I took a look myself and there really are a bunch of silver looking fish barely surviving in the little water that is left (think mini little pools of water spread out over the bottom of the pool). Heard them say OGS won’t let them in there to get them out right now.

Anyone have any recommendations/ideas/leads on who to call or who could handle this? Conservatories, rescues, animal control options? Really don’t want to just let them die! 🐟

Edit: there’s really no need to be weird. I’m doing this in good faith because why wouldn’t I at least try? The world doesn’t have to be so terrible all the time. If you don’t have a genuine suggestion, just ignore this!❤️

Edit #2: I’m making some calls! You can make some too if you want! Maybe if more folks call a bunch of places (NYS Troopers, DEC, Animal Control, Animal Protective services etc. etc. etc.) then someone will do something about it. Maybe not, but I hope so. I don’t expect that I myself can solve this but perhaps my efforts can solve this issue or at least help solve it. No sense in not trying to do something good when I have the time to do it. Hoping and pushing for the best possible outcome. 🐟🩵

Capital Region local here, just published my first novel

Post image

Former teacher, longtime area resident, and as of this week a published author, which still feels strange to type.

The Trellis is a novel about AI and faith. It follows two timelines: a history teacher in the near future who watches AI become part of everyday life, and a world centuries later guided by an AI that serves as both spiritual and political leader. How the two connect is the heart of the book.

If you’re into Silo, The Giver, or 1984, it might be up your alley. Kindle and paperback: amazon.com/dp/B0HN4J8CFR

Would love to hear from any other local writers too.

4 accidents back to back on I-90 East today. What is going on??

Got out of work around 5 today and got on I-90 East near exit 4. Traffic was backed up and as I got closer I noticed a truck had rear-ended a car in the middle lane. They were literally still stuck together.

So I slowly merged into the left lane to get around them only to see ANOTHER accident involving about 4 cars on the left side.

Had to move back into the middle lane, and not too far down there’s another 3 car accident on the right with a roadside truck there.

At this point I’m thinking what the hell is going on today lol.
Then as I’m getting closer to exit 6A I see yet ANOTHER accident involving 3 cars with State Police at the scene.

That’s 4 separate accidents between exits 4 and 6A all within a short radius and the crazy part is they all looked like rear ends.

I drive on I-90 all the time, but I’ve never seen anything like this. What are the odds of 4 separate accidents happening that close together?? It was a mess

An Observation: And while I am not planning on dying anytime soon...

Someday, when I do shuffle off, I genuinely hope that someone somewhere out there, chooses to have a custom vinyl decal of my name and lifespan adhered to the back of their soon to be -repossessed Nissan Altima, and then backed into someone else's car while its parked at the Colonie Target like three times. Really that's all I want. That'll prove to me that my life mattered . Bonus points if you include graphics like a rose or a dollar bill or a fist, Pokemon. whatever. Whatever I was into at the time of death. really I'm open to anything.

Avoid it. There’s a huge accident just before you get to the Northway. Traffic is backed up almost to the bridge. Find an alternate route.

Hispanic Heritage Month: El Mariachi’s Ofrenda

Hi all! Today marks the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15th - Oct 15th) so I thought I’d share the Ofrenda (offering) that my mom sets up each year at the restaurant to celebrate and honor the tradition of Día de los Muertos. Día de los Muertos is primarily celebrated across Mexico on Nov 1st and 2nd and is a celebration of life that blends together indigenous tradition with Spanish-Catholic tradition. During this time, it’s believed those who have passed over from the physical world into the spiritual realm can return to celebrate with family and loved ones over food, drink, and music.

A large part of this tradition is the Ofrenda. This is an offering made in the form of an altar to the loved ones being celebrated. Our Ofrenda at El Mariachi is decorated with:

- Marigolds (bright orange flowers used to help guide the spirits to the altar)
- Calaveritas de Azúcar (tiny sugar skulls playfully decorated with frosting)
- Our Lady of Guadalupe (patroness of Mexico)
- Papel Picado (traditional Mexican folk art made by cutting intricate designs into delicate tissue paper, represents the element of air)
- Candles (to help illuminate a path for the spirits, represents the element of fire)
- Jarritos de Barro (traditional clay pottery mugs, represents the element of water)
- Pan de Muerto (“Bread of the Dead”, sweet Mexican bread that represents the element of earth) will be displayed closer to Nov 2nd

In the center of the altar is an old photograph of my mom’s parents. My grandparents passed away in 2008 and 2009, but when my mom opened the first restaurant in 1996 they were both by her side helping the business get off the ground. They also lived in the same household as us growing up and helped raise me and my siblings. They introduced me to much of my Hispanic heritage.

Along with the Ofrenda, I have included pics of the dining rooms with our fall decor, our seasonal special Apple Cider Margarita, and one of my favorite dishes on the menu: Pollo El Mariachi (grilled chicken topped with Oaxacan cheese and our creamy chipotle sauce). I hope you all will stop by and check out the Ofrenda, food, drink, and atmosphere in person.

If anyone has any pics of their Ofrendas or ones they’ve seen in the past, please feel free to post them below!

Albany should do this!

Any Dorcey or Common Council staffers lurking on here? This could be a good way to clean up our city and help out some of our unhoused neighbors.

Also, since my Common Council rep apparently can’t be bothered to respond to constituent emails, I also think that hiring local artists to fix our cracked sidewalks by adding mosaics to the cracks like they have done in Paris, Madrid, Austin, Barcelona, and Milan would make them more ADA compliant, safer, and easier on the eyes.

Probably cheaper to do something like this too than to keep paying through the nose when people inevitably trip and sue the city.

Post Saint Rose Career Guidance Question

Since Saint Rose is closed, alumni don't have access to any school resources. Is there a way for past students to get help with career building?

I'm asking for someone else and trying to see if the community has any resources related to past Saint Rose Alumni. I already called UAlbany and asked the career center if they would be able to help. They said no.

Apartment for low income 62+

Hi everyone,
My mom is almost 62 years old and would like to move to the capital region to be close to family. She is very low income (receives $1300 a month from SS). She also doesn’t drive so I’d like to find something on the bus route. Any way anyone is able to share services I can help her find? Every place I look apartments are $1500+, I’m worried she won’t be able to survive at all. We’re really looking for a housing subsidy so she can pay 30% months income. Thanks.

Albany Codes (BRC) and Planning- WTH?!?

I have a major frustration. Aside from the fact that when calling City offices, I get treated like vermin instead of like a customer, I don’t understand how the ball gets dropped with regard to codes and planning enforcement.

The BRC and Planning allowed a neighbor to build a large garage on their property that exceeded the 30% non-permeable surface rule, in place at the time of construction. No variance was applied for at the time.

In addition to that, the BRC inspector didn’t notice that the garage was actually bigger than the one that was approved.

Then the neighbor extended their driveway to the giant new garage, essentially leaving a postage stamp of lawn. There was no permit for the driveway extension, and since it was not a replacement, it definitely required permitting.

As a result, during rainstorms a lake is created on the “postage stamp” which directly affects the property next door, flooding the garage with so much water that it can no longer be used for storage and cars cannot be parked in the garage when there is an expectation of rain. Water levels get so high in the garage that it floods the cars.

After much back-and-forth, BRC eventually returned to the site and did put a STOP-work order on the property two years after the construction was complete. They claim that the employee that did the Planning approvals no longer works for the office and so there’s nothing they can do.

To fight the fines and STOP WORK Order, the homeowner applied for a variance from the board, and after several meetings, the Board denied the variance.

Here’s where the ball drop happened. There is a STOP WORK Order and a fine imposed by the BRC. The BRC has now closed this with no consequences. The note in the file says it is a civil issue between neighbors.

If the city-funded (taxpayer-funded) BRC department and the Planning department both failed to do their job, why is the City attorney not handling this issue, and why is it up to the homeowner to go to the expense of resolving the flooding caused by the failure of the Planning department and the BRC?!?!

Moving soon from Cohoes to Cohoes, and wondering if anyone has any recommendations for movers? Also any info on cost (very rough estimates even) would be so helpful. Currently in a 2 bdrm apartment, looking for movers to mainly move large/heavy furniture, and would definitely definitely prefer an insured company. Thanks!

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to pick up some extra work around Albany and the surrounding areas.

I'm open to pretty much any type of work, including moving assistance, lifting and carrying furniture, yard work, cleaning, organizing, furniture assembly, loading and unloading, running errands, and general labor.

I'm also open to other tasks or projects you need help with. I'm hardworking, dependable, and willing to learn new things.

I have reliable transportation and a flexible schedule. I'm available for one-time jobs, recurring work, or anything in between.

If you need an extra set of hands for anything, feel free to send me a message with what you need done and when.

Thanks!
