I sincerely hope people will see this post. I'm struggling to process what happened and desperately need advice on how to move on.
This happened in 2017, when I was 24F. I'm now 33F, and I recently learned what had really happened. While working in Mexico, I met a wealthy, established 27M right outside my house. He came by at the same time and place for three days in a row. We chatted each time and eventually exchanged numbers. We texted and agreed to go on a date that Friday.
Then, suddenly, all communication stopped. No more texts, calls, or replies. I assumed he was busy and didn't think too much of it at first. But as Friday approached, I grew worried. I texted him to confirm our date, but he never responded.
Friday came and went. No date, no explanation. I was heartbroken because I genuinely thought we'd had a connection. I never heard from him again, although we saw each other from a distance outside my place once. He looked at me for a few seconds that felt like an eternity, shook his head, and walked away. I assumed he'd decided I wasn't interesting enough. Heartbroken, I moved on with my life.
Now, almost nine years later, I recently learned that the friend I was always with in Mexico, who was 22F at the time, admitted to deliberately blocking him on my phone and social media so neither of us could contact the other.
I trusted her completely. I helped her get a job and a place to live, let her stay at my home, gave her money, and confided in her about everything, including my hopes for a future with this man. When he stopped responding, she acted just as sad and upset as I was. She would randomly ask whether I'd heard from him, and I genuinely believed she was being a caring friend.
On the day of our planned date, she even called to make sure I was home. I was debating whether to get ready and wait outside for him, but she talked me out of it because I hadn't heard from him. I trusted her and listened.
We continued working in Mexico for several more months. Every now and then, she would ask whether I'd heard anything from him. I hadn't.
I'd completely forgotten about this man until recently. Now, learning what my friend did has left me devastated. I've been crying for hours, struggling to process the betrayal.
What hurts most isn't just the betrayal itself. It's the feeling that someone I trusted took away my ability to make my own choices and decide the course of my life. She had absolutely no right to decide whether I deserved a chance with this man, a wealthy one at that. That was my decision to make, not hers.
I can't stop wondering whether jealousy played a role. The thought that she have deliberately sabotaged a potential relationship because she couldn't stand to see me happy is haunting me. She knew how much he meant to me and knew about my hopes for the future, yet she has deliberately interfered instead of letting me make my own decisions.
I know I shouldn't dwell on what might have been, but I can't stop wondering how different my life could have been if she'd never interfered. Maybe he could have become my husband. Maybe I would have built a completely different life, without the pain I experienced in the marriage that followed. I'll never know, and that's what breaks my heart. I can't get those years back, and I can never return to that Friday and make my own choice.
Part of me wishes I could reach out to him and explain what really happened. I wonder whether he also spent years questioning what went wrong or believing I simply wasn't interested in him. I wish he knew that I never deliberately ignored or rejected him.
However, I have no intention of contacting him. Almost nine years have passed, and he may have moved on, found someone, and built a family. I respect his privacy and don't want to disturb the life he has created.
Still, it hurts knowing he may never learn the truth, just as I went nearly nine years without knowing it myself. I wish we could both have the answers we deserved, even if our lives have gone in completely different directions.
I know no one can say for certain what would have happened between us, and I'm not claiming we would have lived happily ever after. But we deserved the chance to find out for ourselves. Instead, I spent years believing I wasn't good enough for him, when someone else has been deliberately preventing us from even talking.
I feel robbed of a choice, of a possibility and of an entirely different future. I'm struggling to accept that someone else's actions have changed the course of my life without my knowledge or consent.
How do you make peace with something like this? How do you stop grieving a life you might have had when you'll never get the chance to find out what could have happened?
