Husband says this wooly worm indicates rough start to Winter, then long stretch of mild temps finishing with a rough end to season. Snowstorm in April perhaps?

all counties Affordable Dental Cleaning!

Hi everyone, I am a 2nd year dental hygiene student in need of patients! I’m currently looking for patients for my dental hygiene clinic who have significant buildup of tartar (calculus) on their teeth, the more the better!

You may be a good candidate if you haven’t been to the dentist in a long time, have difficulty keeping up with daily brushing and flossing, have noticed a lot of buildup on your teeth, or experience bleeding gums.
These patients are part of my clinical requirements as a dental hygiene student, and I would greatly appreciate help finding someone who may qualify!

What to Expect:
-Appointments are approximately 2.5 hours long.
-Treatment may take up to 5 appointments to complete, depending on your needs.
-We measure your gums, perform an oral cancer screening, and thoroughly assess your oral health.
-Instructors perform several checks throughout the appointment to ensure accuracy and quality of care.

Affordable Pricing:
First appointment: $50
Each additional appointment: $10
X-rays are an additional charge.

Location: AB Tech Dental Clinic, Asheville NC
If you’ve been putting off dental care, this is a great opportunity to work toward better oral health while helping me complete my clinical requirements!
If you’re interested or know someone who may be a good fit, please send me a message.

A data center next door: What changed for Forest City neighbors after 13 years?

Hey everyone! My name is Elijah Skipper. I'm an investigative reporter with News 13 in Western North Carolina.

With all the attention on data centers, I wanted to go back to one that's been here for years and find out what life has actually been like next door.

Our station investigated generator noise at Facebook's Forest City site in 2013. I tracked down two of the neighbors from that report, Jim Bennett and Tommy Doggett, and went back to see them.

We watched their old interviews together, then went into Jim's backyard beside the site. They say it's much quieter now. Both believe the sound-absorbing material and trees helped.

Something that stayed with me was how much credit they gave the original reporting for getting Facebook to listen. They also wanted to acknowledge that the company became a better neighbor.

But getting there took time. In our 2015 follow-up, neighbors were still saying the noise was a problem.

I went back through the earlier coverage and state records and kept following up with Meta about what changed, when, and whether Forest City influenced its practices elsewhere. At publication, its spokesperson was still trying to track down answers. We hadn't obtained a current generator testing schedule or written agreement showing what hours apply now.

I think there's something useful here for other WNC communities having these conversations. Hearing that things improved matters. So does understanding what residents had to do to get there and what commitments they can actually rely on.

If you live near the Forest City site, what has your experience been? For people elsewhere in WNC, what would you want settled before a data center is approved near homes?

I'm happy to answer questions about the reporting. Feedback and suggestions for what deserves another look are welcome, too.

Tax amendments are not a tax cut and not what they seem. Please do your research and understand who benefits and what impact they would have on your community.

Income tax cap: Lowers the existing cap from 7 to 3.5 percent

  • It is not a tax cut. It applies to both the corporate and personal rate. Both rates are already scheduled to be below 3.5 percent next year.
  • The NC General Assembly has been cutting income taxes for 13 years. This has disproportionately benefitted large corporations and those with high incomes.
  • State revenue is falling as our population and costs grow. This is unsustainable and has led to underfunding of services and programs, and local governments paying for what are supposed to be state costs.
  • Income tax cuts lead to increases in fees and sales taxes, and cuts to services.
  • The income tax amendment would lock us into this situation effectively permanently.
  • NC has never had a rate this low, and it will be locked into the constitution. This leaves the state unprepared for economic downturns and unforeseen circumstances like natural disasters.

Property Tax Levy Limit: Caps what local governments can collect, NOT your bill

  • It is not a cap on an individual’s property tax bill. It is a cap on the total revenue a local government can collect in property taxes.
  • State lawmakers already have the power to set a levy limit. Don’t need a constitutional amendment.
  • Increasingly, local governments have been taking on costs that are supposed to be covered by the state and/or federal government. This amendment is likely to lead to service cuts as local governments struggle with state and local revenue constraints.
  • It does not address housing unaffordability and would disproportionately benefit large corporate landowners like tech companies and corporate landlords.
  • What the limit would be and how it would be derived is not public.

Before voting, consider the impact these amendments will have on your community:

  • Who would benefit from these changes and who would be negatively impacted?
  • What would these amendments mean for the funding of quality of life services my family and community rely on, like emergency services, community centers, libraries, public schools, water and sanitation…?
  • How would these revenue constraints impact the ability of the state and local governments to provide services for a growing or aging population and respond to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances in the future, especially as costs rise?
  • What are specific projects prioritized by our community that are most at risk for delay or cancellation if state funding is uncertain and local government cannot collect sufficient revenue from property taxes to supplement decreases in state investment?
  • How have state and federal funding levels changed over the last 5-10 years? What state funding responsibilities has my local government taken on over that same period?
  • What specific funding shortfalls are we experiencing now,

including staffing shortages, school closures, or services interruptions?

  • What are the other methods of generating revenue if income tax and property tax revenue is constrained. Will our locality be forced to rely more on unpopular fees?

henderson county TW: Animal Neglect. Looking for Cat rescuers in the Zirconia area.

I do deliveries and my last one was upsetting. It was to a pretty sketchy trailer park which zero disrespect to anyone that lives in an area like that. It’s just with remote areas it’s higher risk of a redneck with a 🔫. I pull up and there’s a kitten sitting on the ramp that goes up to the door. I’m excited then getting the delivery out I start noticing like 7-10 more cats, almost all at different ages of kitten/young adult age coming over to me. The one sitting on the ramp was by far the smallest maybe 1.5 months old. When I got closer I noticed one of its eyes was so infected it was bulging out of its little head like it’d pop out and its face was red/raw in places. Heartbreaking, noticed several others also had eye infections but not nearly as bad as the littlest one. They didn’t seem feral, were pretty friendly honestly, and looked decently fed. Thought really hard about scooping it up and taking off but was worried about someone coming out with a 🔫 saying you’re stealing my cat. And while being indecisive it went under the person’s trailer. I still have the address, trying to figure out if I can call somewhere to get them rescued. It’s heartbreaking and something has gotta be done. Animal control for Henderson county and aspca nc are the only resources I’ve found to far.

inexpensive mountain wedding venues

Hi all! I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for inexpensive wedding venues, preferably with views of the mountains. We would love to just get married on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but our guest list is 55 people, so too many for the parkway! We met in WNC, spend most of our free time hiking/backpacking/fly fishing and would love to get married in a place where we share so much love. It needs to be somewhere easily accessible as we have older grandparents who are not mobile enough to hike up a mountain. We don’t have a date picked yet, just throwing out ideas right now! We DON’T need catering, a photographer, or onsite wedding planner included!

Please let me know any ideas you may have! We want a special day with our close friends and family we just don’t want to go into major debt celebrating! Thank you!!!
