Housing Megathread: Have Housing questions? Look here first!
It seems like every time I'm on here there's nothing but the same housing questions so here's some advice and resources.
When should I start looking for housing for ___ school year?
Immediately! Housing in Boone is famously hard to find these days. Most places will fill up by March before the following fall semester. You will be left with the leftovers if you do not get onto a list before then. Places to avoid if possible: The Cottages This is a party area. It is constantly covered in trash. Terrible management. The Standard I haven't lived here but I've heard it's ridiculously overpriced.
.
Tips for this
* Accept that you will probably not get a perfect situation no matter what. Most every renting company in Boone is looking to screw you. Try and get lucky.
* Call the apartment complex even if the website says they're full. They will probably be able to tell you if there is someone looking for a sublease, or they will get you on a list for the following year. This is how I managed to get a Skyline Terrace apt. I called in August of the previous year and got on a list for the next year.
* Look at the App State housing website. Here . This is not always the most helpful but it's a good place to start.
* When you do decide on a place, keep watch for hidden costs. Most places don't love to advertise when a utility isn't included. For example, I, in a 1 bed 1 bath, pay about 170$ a month in utilities. 80$ for electric, 50$ for water and 40$ for optional faster internet. So even though my rent is technically 940$, in order to actually use my apt it's about 1110$.
* ALWAYS TOUR THE APT FIRST. I didn't do this during the covid year and got stuck in an ADA 3 bed 2 bath instead of the 3 bed 3 bath that I was paying for. The housing company told me tough luck.
.
I need a roommate / I need to sublease my apartment / I need to pick up a sublease
This is a bit easier. Since everyone is so hungry for housing, finding a roommate / sublease is fairly painless.
.
Tips for this
* Same as above, call the apt complex you want to live in and ask if they have available subleases. Most apt complexes also have a roommate matching service that you can use. You may end up with people you don't like (ask me how I know) so use with caution.
* Use the Appalachian Classifieds. This is the most common piece of advice on housing threads here. It is the largest classifieds group for the Boone area. It is on Facebook and you will need to be approved before you can see anything. I think it has a fairly high success rate. Also easy to get cheap furniture on there if you need it. Link HERE Be sure to put "through reddit housing post" as how you heard about the group. This helps the moderation process, per u/Cammdoser.
* If you are going to pick up a sublease, make sure to ask if its going to be renewable. I saw a girl on the classifieds trying to sublease her apartment for just the month of July. The person who picks that up will move in July first and need to be out July 31st. Not ideal, don't get stuck in that situation on accident.
.
When do I get my room number and roommate?
For most places, on and off campus, you'll get this in July before the semester starts. Sometimes you won't for off campus. I've had times where I didn't meet my roommates until move in day.
.
Moving in
This is always hectic. There will normally be 100 other people moving in or out on these days so be prepared.
.
Tips for this
* From /u/klylet, DAY OF MOVE IN AND MOVE OUT: take detailed pictures and videos of damage and immediately ask where to send/share them with the rental company. Make sure they can be dated, preferably on the photo itself. Do this before you move furniture in, and after you move furniture out and clean. They WILL charge you for damages that were there before you got there, and won't care if it was there unless you specifically report it. When you move in, if there is carpet, put white socks on and shuffle across the carpet. If you see black specks that looks that pepper, those are flea eggs. Call the apartment and require carpet cleaning / replacement and a terminator company to come. If you do not report within 30 days, they will likely not cover the cost and blame you for it.
.
I think this covers most things, if anyone else has any other great tips, this is the place to put them. The mods told me this would be pinned so it should stay up for a while for people to see.

Where to smoke 🍃?
So I’m pretty much a twice daily stoner, part (only part, I do love being high) medicinal as it slows down my normally overactive adhd self and helps me socially, and I could go down to just before bed but where tf can I safely smoke on campus? Aren’t there like trails or whatever? I’m a transfer junior in mountain laurel for the spring and I know I can’t smoke in there. Thanks!

How do i kick somebody out of a study room
On Monday, I was in the library waiting for my study room, as I had an online class. My room reservation was for 3:00 PM, and there were two pledges inside wearing their suits.
I knocked on the door at 3:01 PM and said, “Hey guys, I have this room reserved for 3 PM.” They both responded, “BRUH,” and, while laughing, said, “Show me your reservation.”
I showed them my reservation, and one of them said, “Bro, WTF? I’m in a meeting. You’re going to have to come back later.”
I just went and sat down and joined my Zoom class. They left after 3–5 minutes and said, “Next time, be nicer, jackass.”
I have anxiety, and I would like to know if there was any way I could have handled this situation better.
Thank you.

Boone Heads up on Appalachian Mobile Mechanic
Hey everyone, just wanted to put out a PSA for local drivers, ASU students, and families in the High Country about Appalachian Mobile Mechanic (operated by a guy named Matt).
My elderly grandfather was having car trouble, pulled up Google Maps, searched "mechanic near me," and selected the closest option. Maps routed him straight to a private residential driveway in Zionville. When he realized there was no shop, waiting room, or garage, he left a polite 1-star review mentioning that he drove all the way out there for nothing and that mobile-only services shouldn't list a private house as a public storefront.
Instead of just adjusting his Google profile settings to hide his personal address (which Google explicitly requires for mobile-only service area businesses), the owner took a screenshot of my grandfather’s review and posted this on his business Facebook page to mock and humiliate him publicly

Appstate was Cornell once.
The chancellor should make a statement and esp for the frats talking about what happens way too much. Frats and athletes protected by rich old men because of money or fame. Asu did the same as Cornell once don't forget After rape allegations at Appalachian State University last year highlighted flaws in the university’s handling of sexual assault cases, administrators say reforms will improve the process and better protect students.
In 2011, two women filed sexual assault allegations against the same two football players. They presented their claims to the university’s Student Conduct Board, which included undergraduate students. The board suspended both players.
The players returned to campus, and one was reinstated on the 2012 football roster, said Annie Hegar, a student who protested the handling of the sexual assault cases.
After more than 150 students gathered at ASU last spring to silently protest the university’s handling of the cases, Hegar — along with ASU students Frank Byrne and John Secrest — proposed the formation of an Interpersonal Violence Task Force to review the university’s sexual assault policies.
The task force, which is composed of students, faculty and staff is currently conducting research about the university’s policies and the climate on campus.
ASU
“Given some challenges from last year, we absolutely wanted to review processes and procedures,” he said.
The university has also revamped its process for reporting sexual assaults.
Chancellor Kenneth Peacock removed students from the Sexual Misconduct Board, which reviews assault cases, in August, Brown said. Three members of faculty and staff will now attend each assault case hearing.
“Research has shown that by (removing students), victims will have more confidence in a system that involves trained members,” said Secrest, who is also a member of the task force and vice president of student affairs for the UNC-system Association of Student Governments.
ASU students are giving positive feedback about the new policies, said Hegar, another member of the task force.
“The (students) have been very happy that a positive is emerging from the stigma of the ‘cover-ups’ by universities,” she said.
Secrest is also talking with student deans and vice chancellors of student affairs across the UNC-system to gauge the feasibility of similar task forces at other campuses.
ASG, which is composed of student leaders across the system, also needs to focus more on sexual assault reforms, said Byrne, chief of staff for the association.
About one in four college women are sexually assaulted, he said.
“It’s insane — 25 percent — and it’s notoriously under-reported,” he said. “It’s not a society I want to live in or anyone wants to live in.”

Sedan in Boone
Hello! I am strongly considering App State for grad school next fall. Right now it is one of my top choices (if I get in). I have visited Boone once back in Feburary of this year when it was snowing, so I do know what it can be like.
I currently have a 2021 Honda Civic that I love dearly. However, I wasn't sure if people really drive sedans in the snow up in Boone. Full discolsure, I am from the south (Chattanooga, TN) and rarely see snow or drive in it. I was wondering if I would need to trade in my car for a suv or other AWD if I went to App State. Just wnated to know this because it would possibly prevent me from even applying if I have to give up my car.

Is a bike worth it
Just got into app state!! Preparing lists on what to get for college.
Is a bike worth it or should I walk to my classes? What do the locals think about bikes? From my experience in my neighborhood at least, they dislike people who ride bikes on the sidewalks so just wondering if its the same there.
Also any other weirdly specific things I should 100% get for dorms/daily life?

Where are The Wooshies?
I'm looking for more information regarding the Wooshies. The mythical cult followers of the MOD-1 Windturbine in 1979/1980. Anybody know if the spoof video they made exists somewhere or anybody who was there? Would love to find out more. Thanks in advance!

The old APH
Hi App State Reddit, I am writing to find out if anyone else had spooky experience in the APH.
I lived there in the mid 2010s and I have never had such terrifying experiences as I did in that building.
Did anyone else live there/visit there and have spooky experience that might be paranormal?
