Salient piece that's worth a read if you've ever wondered why your tutorials keep getting bigger.
Main stuff: Vic cut staff in 2023 and said it was a one-off, but the academic workforce is still 62 FTE down from 2023, while student numbers have gone up. Roughly 10% more students per academic than three years ago.
Vic's starting lecturer minimum is $91,738. Auckland's is $99,788, Otago's is $97,377. We're the lowest and also the most expensive city to live in out of the lot.
Vic apparently doesn't publish its academic vs professional payroll split in the annual report (Canterbury does), so the writer had to OIA it. Academic payroll dropped $4.2m between 2022 and 2024, professional went up slightly.
And the staff stats page on the Vic website literally doesn't add up with itself. The role categories total 2,237 FTE, the total on the same page says 2,173. Been like that for two months.
