Have you guys picked a course yet?

• Upvotes

Kia Ora everyone I just wanted to ask those (especially undergraduates) students if they have chosen their courses yet? I received an email from VUW saying I havent enrolled yet (I assume its courses?) but I am still trying to figure out the courses I can/should take. I just wanted to ask if you guys have enrolled or what, what I need to do and if I have to pay for course fees now.

BCom in Accounting and Finance btw.

Question Second year law courses?

I’m currently doing an LLB with no conjoint, and I’m very confused as to how many law courses I should be taking in second year, considering I need to qualify as a full time student, but it is not recommended to take all level 2 law courses in one year. I’ve asked a course advisor but it was not clear. Does anyone have any advice?

Question Bereavement

A friend of mine found out one of their family members is in critical condition ( not dead though) and they have an exam tomorrow morning but won’t be able to sit it. How does one go about it cause apparently the course coordinator just doesn’t reply and Google said ‘exams@vuw.ac.nz’ is the best bet. Just wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this kind of situation and what to do !! And also would they be able to resit or get an aegrotat pass? Any and all advice is appreciated

Stat193 cheat sheet

Is there anything I can’t put on it??

It says “The Exam is hand-written (short answers) and in-person only*. It takes place during the university assessment period. No devices are permitted (or needed), but you should bring a calculator (any type: scientific, graphics or basic). The exam is closed book but you will be allowed to bring a 2-sided A4 'cheat sheet' on which you can have any notes you wish, hand-written, typed or pasted.
There is a Mandatory Course Requirementto achieve at least 30% in the exam  (30% of the marks available, so if the exam was out of 60 you would need at least 18 marks).** “ I have one that’s words printed out on paper nothing else

Discussion Why are ppl on campus if they're just here to hang out? [Not serious]

I swear it's noisier than ever these days

Y'all surely got a comfier flat to hang out at or smth

Why is there so much shrieking in the "quiet" zones??

I also cant believe someone thought it was a good idea to do karaoke with loud mics???

No one wants to have to study all day, more likely if we keep getting distracted 🙃 🤪🫠😭

Assignment results

Anyone got any thoughts on a reasonable time to wait for results before escalating

The assessment handbook indicates 3 weeks, with delays to be communicated.

I am currently waiting on results for 2 assignments across two different papers - one submitted in the last week of august and one in the second week of september. Neither are capstone or any other type of major work.

The lecturers have told us it is pending without giving details. It sounds like they have done their bit.

How long is too long before raising a complaint? I like both the lecturers, but feedback is important, particularly as the second round of assignments is due next week

The whole class is the same, so its not a me thing

Transfer from UOA to VUW for law part II

Hi I am currently studying Law Part I at UOA and wanted to transfer to Victoria. I was wondering what my chances of getting into part II would be and if the law courses from uoa will be treated the same as VUW law courses. I currently have a gpa of 6.0 b+ in first sem and am expected to finish second sem with a gpa of 7.0 A-. What would my chances of getting accepted be? And does anyone who has transferred have any experiences or advice? Thanks

Is anyone working on analysis research of Russian bots?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I have some ideas for an experiment after the Yandex server strike has taken out a bunch of the Russian social media bots.

Some of the initial very rough analysis I had done a while back seemed to show a possible bot farm promoting National and Act, and I was trying to work out if it was NZ or foreign based.

I'm terribly basic in my analysis, I have some possible formulae or methods but would love to even chat to someone who may have different skills.

Meta in particular has a research api which I don't have.

Vic pays its lecturers less than any other uni in the country, in the most expensive city

Salient piece that's worth a read if you've ever wondered why your tutorials keep getting bigger.

Main stuff: Vic cut staff in 2023 and said it was a one-off, but the academic workforce is still 62 FTE down from 2023, while student numbers have gone up. Roughly 10% more students per academic than three years ago.

Vic's starting lecturer minimum is $91,738. Auckland's is $99,788, Otago's is $97,377. We're the lowest and also the most expensive city to live in out of the lot.

Vic apparently doesn't publish its academic vs professional payroll split in the annual report (Canterbury does), so the writer had to OIA it. Academic payroll dropped $4.2m between 2022 and 2024, professional went up slightly.

And the staff stats page on the Vic website literally doesn't add up with itself. The role categories total 2,237 FTE, the total on the same page says 2,173. Been like that for two months.

Link for anyone interested: https://www.salient.org.nz/post/te-herenga-waka-said-the-cuts-were-a-one-off-so-where-are-the-academics

Question Should I add Information Systems or do a conjoint degree?

I’m currently a first-year Bachelor of Science student at Victoria University of Wellington, studying Data Science and Statistics. I’m considering specialising in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

I’m trying to decide whether I should:

  • Continue with my current degree and specialise in AIML
  • Add Information Systems as another major or subject area
  • Do a conjoint degree

My long-term goal is to work in data science, data analytics or another IT-related role after graduation. I’m wondering which option would be more beneficial for employment and career opportunities.

For people who have studied Data Science, Statistics, AIML or Information Systems:

  • Is adding Information Systems useful for getting IT jobs?
  • Would a conjoint degree provide a significant advantage?
  • Is it better to focus on one degree and build experience through projects, internships and extracurricular activities?
  • How important are specialisations compared with practical skills and work experience?
  • Would adding another area make the workload unnecessarily difficult?

I’d really appreciate advice from current students, graduates or people working in data science or IT. Please share your experience and what you would choose if you were in my position.

Question Tri 3 courses?

I need to take enough tri 3 courses to keep my study link over the break (thanks to the cost of living) But also to make up some points for my degree. I'm currently in my 2nd year of law, If anyone could give me some ideas about some really easy classes i could do whilst juggling work i would really appreciate it! (Ideally not WRIT101 as i work casually and so worry about missing 6 hours worth of seminars) Thanks again!

Housing Flats or apartment recommendations

Hi. International student for the incoming 2027 year.

Do you guys know where to look for accomodations near the Kelburn Campus? I got a hall offer but the cost is too high so I'm finding a shared flat or apartment nearby.

I'll be arriving by January 2027. If you guys have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you.
