How a Japanese Sushi Chef Helped Turn Somali Pirates into Fishermen
The story of how Kiyoshi Kimura, CEO of the popular Japanese sushi chain Sushizanmai, contributed to dismantling piracy networks is not only surprising—it’s a testament to the power of empathy and entrepreneurial thinking in solving complex international problems.
Kimura provided fishing vessels, training, and access to a tuna distribution network—tools that allowed former pirates to earn a legal, sustainable living. He also helped facilitate their participation in the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), integrating them into the broader fishing economy.
With livelihoods secured and trust rebuilt, piracy began to decline. Though Kimura’s actions were only one part of a multi-faceted response, they demonstrated how non-military solutions can address the root causes of conflict.
