Credit where credit is due. Well done India. Sadly in the US the opposite is happening- Trump is tearing downs forests. Was even petty enough to cut down the trees outside the Kennedy Centre in a fit of spite.

Indian government changed the definition of what counts as reforested land. As long as there's no man made structure, it counts as reforested even if there's been no new trees planted. And there are no new trees planted.
This is only on paper.

Not really. Stop making BS because of your political agenda. There are multiple definitions based on what type of cover it is.
Here are the actual definitions.
Forest Cover: defined as all lands, more than one hectare in area, with a tree canopy density of more than 10%. Such lands may or may not be statutorily notified as forest area which is the area recorded as a forest in the Government records. It is also referred to as "Recorded Forest Area". Forest Cover includes all cultivated tree plantations or orchards with an area of more than one hectare.
- Very Dense Forest: All lands, with a forest cover with a canopy density of 70% and above. It covers nearly 3.04% of the country's area in 2021.
- Moderately Dense Forest: All lands, with a forest cover with a canopy density of 40-70 %. It covers nearly 9.33% of the country's area in 2021.
- Open Forest: All lands, with forest cover with a canopy density of 10 to 40%. It covers nearly 9.34% of the country's area in 2021.
- Scrub Cover: All lands, generally in and around forest areas, having bushes and or poor tree growth, chiefly small or stunted trees with canopy density less than 10%.It covers nearly 1.42% of the country's area in 2021.
- Non-Forest Land: defined as lands without any forest cover. It covers nearly 76.87% of the country's area in 2021.

Even if that is true, which it isn't , that is a good place to start isn't it. Remove the man made structures and let nature take its course.

India is doing great in mega fauna and forest conservation. There are surely lots of areas it can greatly improve. But considering the fact that it has 1/3rd the land of China with similar population along with prevalent poverty and economic status it is a great effort by the country

Amidst the growing hate towards Indians on Reddit, it’s nice to see people being nice.

Fuck 'em. Bigots are trash, and the internet is full of them. I'm proud of my people for accomplishing this.

I hope this isn't taken negatively because any effort is better than no effort... butA bit more reading into the report details mentions it is the data between 2010 and 2020. Also, there seems to be some confusion between "restored" and "brought under restoration efforts" , one meaning the project was successful and ecological health has recovered, the other meaning, well, we have started work on it. Op, would you like to clarify. The actual government report which the news article from the link is referencing, states the latter.

By "restored forest" do they mean all the scraggly little trees planted along the roadside in rural India? Sadly, forests are still being illegally burned and destroyed for grazing and development all over the country. Just look at the recent outcry over the wanton destruction of the Aravalli Hills. This is particularly a problem in highly biodiverse areas like the Konkan region of Maharashtra. I hiked many Maratha forts around there and was very disappointed to see how barren and blackened most of the land was, devoid of any sizable trees. Constantly there were new plumes of smoke rising from the land around villages...one could count dozens looking out from a single overlook. Only the most strictly protected areas with ranger patrols remained green intact habitats for India's wildlife.

India has lot of land where layouts are made . Housing is done shops are setup. But is declared forest land when you go to buy it..
In India stating something is a forest and is just gazette issued by the local district magistrate. It doesn't in anyway imply whether forestry is happening or not.
This is problem with India. This extends to agriculture as well. You have hundreds of across of private farm houses declared as agricultural land. Large scale commercial resorts as agricultural land. Even as we speak outside BLR we have huge housing projects that are legally declared as agriculture land with instagram pages .

Yes greenery in India has increased , mainly due to increased land under agriculture. As indian food needs have increased considerably

Too many inflated news are coming in from India on these world subreddits these days. BJP IT cell has been working extra hours with media houses by controlling the narrative. It is not easy to rank 157th out of 180 countries in media freedom index.
