The Environment Agency has cleared 39,500 tonnes of illegally dumped waste from Kent’s ancient Hoad’s Wood, giving the protected woodland, home to rare plants and wildlife, a chance to recover after being buried under rubbish up to 15 feet deep.

If they'd done their job at all, then they'd have only needed to clear as little as 60 tonnes but for reasons they decided to turn a blind eye despite multiple reports.

If only councils actually took waste properly, it’s gone way to far the other way now because at this point if you don’t have a van you just outright can’t get rid of things like sofas anymore, most refuse collection sites won’t take anything upholstered anymore ‘for fire risks’ and they have specialised sites for them now and you’re expected to get it there yourself or pay through the nose for a private man in a van to take it which the council charges an additional fee for and the less scrupulous ones will just dump it in a wood somewhere anyway.

It’s little wonder fly tipping has been getting worse because beyond daily refuse collection, it’s becoming nigh impossible to actually reliably get rid of anything.

If you want to get rid of something on my road, you just leave it unattended for a few minutes.

What? Did this take place in America? That's just plain shocking.
