Release notes linked.

I've been running a beta on some of my machines for the past week and from what's I've seen it's rock solid, seems to have some of the 26.04 worked out. Plus kernel 7.3.x is nice.

Can't shrink Windows 11 partition enough for Ubuntu dual boot

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu with Windows 11 on my Dell Inspiron 5620 having 512 GB NVMe SSD, but Windows won't let me shrink my C: drive by more than around 7.8 GB, even though I have about 310 GB free.

I've tried defrag C: /X, disabling hibernation, deleting shadow copies, resetting the USN journal, and running chkdsk. Nothing has helped much. The latest Event 259 points to \\$Mft::$BITMAP as an unmovable file.

I want to free up around 120 GiB for Ubuntu without losing my existing Windows installation or messing up the recovery partitions.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Is there a safe way to fix it? Would fully decrypting BitLocker be worth trying, or is there another solution?

Thanks!

I've recently done the upgrade from 24 LTS to 26 LTS but I can't find the Software & Updates App.
Also there was a Livepatch icon in the top panel where I used to check for its condition, also gone.
Have those two things been removed from the 26 LTS?

System stuck

Hey everyone,

My current ThinkPad T460s (i5 6th Gen, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) is choking under my daily workload on Ubuntu.

My Daily Stack:

Multiple VS Code windows & workspace instances

Local LLM / Claude developer tools

Android Studio (Gradle builds)

Local Docker containers & Kubernetes (K3s/Kind)

With only 8GB RAM and a 2-core CPU, memory thrashing and slow builds are killing my productivity.

I have a very tight budget and am looking at a budget-friendly option like the Lenovo V14 G3 (Core i5-1235U, 10 Cores). Plan is to buy it and immediately toss a 16GB RAM stick in the open slot for 24GB total RAM.

Questions:

Will the Lenovo V14 G3 (i5-1235U + 24GB RAM) smoothly handle Android builds, Docker, and multi-VS Code setups without thermal choking?

Are there better secondhand enterprise laptops (like a used ThinkPad T14 or Dell Latitude) in the same budget range I should look for instead?

Thanks!

Performance stuck

Hey everyone,

I’m a product engineer running Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS on a ThinkPad T460s (Core i5 6th Gen, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD).

My daily development stack involves:

Concurrent VS Code instances & multiple workspace windows

Multi-agent LLM / Claude developer tool setups

Android application builds (Gradle compilation & indexing)

Local containerized environments using Docker & local Kubernetes (K3s/Minikube/Kind)

Naturally, 8GB RAM and a 4-Thread 6th Gen Intel chip create severe memory thrashing and long build times. Here is how I’m tuning my Linux environment to squeeze maximum performance out of this 8GB setup, along with my planned upgrade path to a Lenovo V14 G3.

I've got workaround to fix dual monitors bug in Ubuntu 26 ("Failed to use stored monitor configuration")

I have 2 monitors, 1st in standard landscape configuration and 2nd - rotated, vertical.

On Ubuntu 26 after Screen Lock I sometimes got monitors all wrong, with monitor 2 displaying what monitor 1 should've displayed (and rotated, of course), and monitor 1 displaying small fraction of what monitor 2 should've displaying.

In journalctl it is "Failed to use stored monitor configuration: Invalid mode for monitor" with 1st monitor having 1024x768 resolution tops.

What's solving this is to Ctrl + Alt + F3 to enter terminal session and then Ctrl + Alt + F2 to return to Wayland

Canonical is hiring Web Engineers, what for?

I don't think this is suspicious, but web development isn't the first thing I think of when I think of Canonical. As I work in this space, if someone works there, I would be quite interested in what their web team is up to.

Errors after latest update

Im getting some werid errors after the latest software updates whenever i alt tab out and back into games i used to be able to before. This error is from crash 4 (yes i know ironic that crash crashed) but it has happened in multiple games.

Checking to see if its a coincidence it happening after an update or if everyone is affected.

Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS

rtx 4070

The error is

LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 1155]

GameThread timed out waiting for RenderThread after 120.00 secs

Edit: booted into my windows partition and the issue isn't happening there so it is definetly something wrong on the software end. Tried reinstalling the driver but no dice. I'm just going to leave it alone for a bit and assume its something that'll be fixed in another update.

Unable to boot Ubuntu—unknown command line

Device: Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 3

OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

* Dual Boot Ubuntu & Windows install on device, although Window has not been booted into for at least a year, if not more.

* Last updated and upgraded yesterday

* Last backup a year ago. [Went to backup yesterday and unable to gain access to the external hard drive, showing this error (same message as in picture 3, which I sourced from onlien as I can't replicate it to take a picture due to the current issue). The hard drive showed that it was formatted as NFTS, and after installing nfts3 and running nftsfix on the hard drive (`nftsfix /dev/sdv1` or something like that; trying to do this from memory) in the terminal, got an input/output error. Was going to troubleshoot that more today and do a separate backup, but then this happened.]

Report:

Went to log into my primary user, and it showed a brief "Authentification error" beneath the password box before I even started typing in the password. Then, upon entering the password (due to muscle memory being faster than processing the "Authentification error" message), the password box froze out. I was unable to get the screen to change from that state. I could get the basic settings/network drop down (WIFI, bluetooth, etc) in the upper right to drop down and go back up, but was unable to escape to selecting a different user.

I force restarted the device, and upon selecting Ubuntu in the GRUB boot menu, the normal Linux Ubuntu booting screen showed (picture 2, please ignore dirty screen). However, after that instead of the user selection GUI screen that normally populates upon Ubuntu booting, this screen (picture 1) showed up. I do not know what command line this is (e.g. GRUB, GNOME, something else?) nor what the issue is aside from noticing that it shows dependency errors and says `no UUID available providing old NGUID`, which I don't understand how those came about. I don't know how to fix this issue.

Solution Attempts:

Honestly, as I have no idea what this is, I have not done anything besides several device hard reboots to see if that somehow would miraculously fix the issue. Since I don't know what this command line is even in/for, I have not entered any commands—not going to fuck around and find out here when I don't have a recent backup.

Did anyone experience issues over the past 24/48 hours? I didn't notice anything, but apparently a heck of a lot of CDN-related services were down? Was this somehow regional?

I installed Ubuntu 4.10 on a virtual machine. AMA.

I reinstalled it like 10 times for the installer to see the drive (VBox sucks) and to get that fucking DE to work. Then i had to make mouse work normally.

That was my first time installing Ubuntu.
