PSA DONT RENT IT: Smile Student Living charged me using photos from a DIFFERENT apartment

Thumbnail gallery
172 Upvotes

Smile charges a $300 non-refundable fee, while their email says it covers move-out cleaning: "we take care of the final cleaning."

After I moved out of 507 E Clark, they charged me another $185 for "Full Apartment Cleaning." Their proof was a move-out report where every "heavily stained" appliance was in a completely different apartment (pics: left = my unit, right = the other one).

They admitted the photo mix-up in writing, kept the charge anyway, and sent me two "URGENT: Avoid Collections" emails while I was disputing it.

If you rent from Smile: save the admin fee terms, photograph everything at move-out, and check that the inspection photos are actually your unit.

PSA Creep at bus stop

I just want people to be aware, I was standing at the bus stop on the corner of W Green and S Neil when some guy rode past on his bike and yelled something, I had both headphones in and didn’t hear him, he ended up looping back around to stick his hand out and slap my ass. He was on a black bike had on a ski mask with a backpack. I’m guessing he was around his thirties. He was black and looked a little heavier than average but not fat.

The center is little dense and I mixed the dough poorly in a few places, but a valiant first effort.

Much love to u/feeltheknead for the inspiration. Truly a great PhD student hobby.

Shitpost Illini Mascot Battle Royale | Day 3 - Aw Nuts

Post image
22 Upvotes

Defeated Mascot Log:

Day 2: Squirrel has been disqualified by u/Certain-Ad351 for not being unique enough.

Day 1: Noisy Cicada will no longer disturb u/PromotionOk2443's precious sleep cycle.

18 Mascots Enter the Arena. There Can Be Only One Survivor.

For decades, the University of Illinois has been cursed with many proposed mascots.

It's time to answer the question looming over our campus for nearly 20 years:

WHO SHALL REIGN SUPREME AS THE OFFICIAL ILLINOIS MASCOT?

I have scoured the dark corners of this subreddit to assemble the warriors who will partake in this ultimate battle of ultimate destiny. Think I missed someone or something to nominate? That's too damn bad cuz my graphic file corrupted and I'm not going to redo it.

⚔️ THE RULES OF THE ARENA ⚔️

1. UPVOTE TO ELIMINATE.

Comment your nomination for elimination. Upvote the mascot you want to send into the shadow realm, never to be considered our mascot ever again. The contestant with the MOST upvotes gets booted from contention.

2. ONE MASCOT FALLS EVERY DAY.

Every day (whenever I decide), the votes will be tallied, the weakest link will be eliminated. This continues until only ONE mascot remains standing.

3. THIS IS A SHITPOST.

No university involvement. No student referendum. No Board of Trustees approval. No actual consequences. Just Illini fans having fun with imaginary mascots. Save your soapbox about bringing back the Chief. This isn't serious.

4. THE FIGHTING ILLINI ARE FOREVER.

Nobody is changing our name. We are, and always will be, the Fighting Illini. We're just imagining some poor soul in a giant foam costume running around Memorial Stadium, high-fiving children, harassing opposing mascots, and making an ass of themselves for our entertainment.

THE ARENA IS OPEN. MAY THE LEAST HATED MASCOT WIN.

I-L-L!

Ongoing Events Three major Oscar contenders playing this weekend.

Of the seven biggest Oscar contenders for Best Documentary this year, we are showing 3 of them this weekend. A fourth, we already showed this spring.

All screenings at DOCTOBERFEST are at the Savoy 16 + IMAX. Tickets are $12, or if you get a group together, putting 10 tickets in your cart automatically drops the price of all tickets to $10.

Saturday starts out at 4:00pm with The Lorraine, a documentary covering the entire history of the Lorraine Motel, from it's opening in 1924, to it's place as one of the premiere spots in the Green Book, and a haven for the biggest musicians of the day, to the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., and into the creation of the National Civil Rights Museum.

Then we continue at 6:30pm to what USED to be the frontrunner in the race, Once Upon A Time In Harlem. A selection of the Sundance, Cannes, and Telluride Film Festival, some prognosticators still have this as their #1 pick for winning the Oscar for Best Documentary. The story sounds hand-picked to appeal to me. In 1972, director William Greaves filmed a party at Duke Ellington's house, with the living luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. The film sat packed away for 50 years, until his son took it out, and put together this movie.

At 9:00pm, we close out the evening with an encore screening of The History Of Concrete. Along with lots of theaters around the country, we sold out our screening on a Monday Night, and the film just crossed $2 million in ticket sales, making it the highest grossing documentary of the year without Jackasses in it!

As near as I can tell, this is still the only place the film is showing in Central Illinois, so if you want see what everyone is talking about without driving 2 hours, you'll have to come on out to the theater on Saturday Night.

Watch writer/director John Wilson on The Daily Show here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofWw4QWRXoA

On Sunday at 4pm, we show NAZA. The third of the Oscar frontrunners playing this weekend, NAZA, from half of the filmmaking team behind No Other Land, examines the IDF's use of AI and automated surveillance in military targeting during the Gaza war, exploring how military terminology like Nezek Agavi (collateral damage) dehumanizes people.

I will be back around the 1st with our monthly film listings, but we just announced all of the films from November & December, and you can check that out in our email newsletter. If you want to stay on top of what's going on with the Chambana Film Society, and other independent film screenings around the area, think about signing up for the newsletter, following our Facebook Page, or joining our new Facebook Group. (Facebook has recently had some updates which make things MUCH harder, or more expensive — your choice — for pages, so we I started a group instead.

Thanks for reading!

Chambana Questions Food truck schedule source

Is there some common source for when and where the different food trucks will be around campus? I feel like I know but then I find out I'm wrong when I get there or something changed. There has to be a solution to this already right?

Ongoing Events Sweet Potato Harvest (Friday 10/16)- Meadowbrook Learning Garden

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi Y'all! I coordinate the Meadowbrook Learning Garden at Meadowbrook Park in Urbana. The learning garden is associated with Solidarity Gardens, and the focus of the garden is donate food to those who need support. All are welcome to join this event! We will also have lots of flowers and herbs available for volunteers to take home. Below is the post shared on our instagram with more information:

We have decided to move up our sweet potato and frost tender crop harvest to **TOMORROW** (Friday 10/16) from 10am to dusk🍠 🍠 🍠 🍠 🍠 🍠 The close to freezing temps on Friday and Saturday night are concerning, and we want to make sure the food from the garden makes it to our donation sites unspoiled.

We will likely start the day with harvesting the rest of the frost sensitive crops in the garden along with the sweet potato greens so we can drop off them off to our donation sites while they are open. We will then get to digging out the sweet potatoes tubers in the afternoon! We will be working on some weeding and bed breakdown as well if we get through harvesting the tubers early.

We could definitely use help with this last large frost sensitive harvest out of the learning garden 🙂

---

We are still planning to be out in the learning garden on Sunday 10/18. So if you were planning to join us that day, you still can! We will be busy in the garden likely till the end of November this year.

Hobby Anyone interested in forming a band?

I’m a freshman and know a bit about singing and learnt 10 years of drums(weird combination I guess).
I played drum in a rock-pop band in high school but honestly that was not a good experience. So in university now, I think I want to find someone with similar music taste to form a band (kinda like a naive dream or wish of me)
I mostly listened to alt-rock, art-rock music like Radiohead, BCNR, Dresden Dolls, the Velvet Underground, Jeff Buckley, the Strokes, Vampire Weekend, the Smiths… the list goes on but I think u get it. For these bands I think I can be a pretty good drummer in performance, but I learnt jazz and funk for me drum classes so I can do that too.
For singing, my friends say I sing best in folk music like Elliot Smith, Sufjan Stevens for similar voice… But I feel like I would sing Jeff Buckley, the VU more if I were a singer in this band…
Anyway, I think the main purpose of being in a band for me is to have fun… if u r interested plzzz DM me and we can discuss further.

Hey guys, I just got admitted as a spring transfer yesterday night for IS+DS major! I was thinking about potentially doubling in a gies major I was wondering how realistic that would be since I know it is a competitive college. I'm wondering about the same thing with statistics! Any insights would be greatly appreciated!!

Academics ACCY 304

Hey!! I was wondering if anyone could share more information about ACCY 304, specifically what topics are covered in the class and what kinds of projects or assignments there are. I’ve been looking through the course catalog, but I haven’t been able to find much detail beyond the general course description. I’d especially love to hear about any hands-on assignments, case studies, or projects just for some more info about the class. Thank you!!
