Season 2 Spoiler Why Arvo is not as bad as you think
A lot of people see Arvo as purely evil, but I honestly think there's more to him than that. To me, he's just a scared teenager who's been through a lot of trauma and doesn't really know how to deal with it.
One of the biggest reasons people hate him is the ambush at the end of Episode 4. The main argument is that even if you choose not to steal from him, he still sets you up. But honestly, I'm not convinced the ambush was even his idea in the first place.
Throughout the entire confrontation, Arvo seems more guilty and terrified than anything else. He's visibly miserable, keeps stumbling over his words, desperately begs everyone to stop fighting, and even looks genuinely shocked when he realizes there's a baby with the group.
My theory is that when Arvo told his group he'd been robbed/threatened, the others decided to go after the group for revenge and forced him to come along. Arvo always struck me as a pretty peaceful and coward person, and I don't think he has much say in what his group does. The other guys seem to be the ones calling the shots. If I remember correctly, you can even try to make a deal with Arvo during the confrontation, and he seems willing to consider it, only for one of the other guys to tell him to decline.
Then there's the frozen lake scene and Luke's death. I don't think Arvo deliberately planned for that to happen, but even if he did, I still don't think his actions after the shootout can be explained by him being pure evil. There's clearly a lot more going on.
Imagine desperately trying to save your sick sister, only to watch her and everyone else in your group die. Then, instead of being given any time to process what happened, you're taken hostage and subjected to constant abuse by someone who treats you like a punching bag.
And let's be real, a lot of Arvo's actions toward the end are directly tied to Kenny's treatment of him. Being subjected to that kind of relentless cruelty, especially after losing everything, could push just about anyone to their breaking point.
What's interesting is that we see a similar pattern with Kenny himself. The more people he loses and the more trauma he goes through, the more volatile and aggressive he becomes. Both characters are shaped by their suffering, and both end up lashing out at others because of it.
That's why I think Arvo shooting Clementine is more complicated than people make it out to be. I'm not saying what he did was okay, and I'm definitely not trying to justify shooting Clem. But after everything that happened, I can see how the constant abuse from Kenny pushed Arvo into a state of desperation where he just snapped and acted out of pure survival instinct.
I just think Arvo is a much more tragic and complex character than people give him credit for. He's not innocent, obviously, but I don't think he's the one-dimensional villain so many players make him out to be.
