Basically, I got a new Tesla model Y only because of FSD. FSD really lived up to my expectations.
After one year I can say that closing a 0.6% gap will be the hardest engineering challenge.
The way I use FSD: when I need to, I interrupt it even for a few seconds and start it over, using turn signal and acceleration all the time to override behavior, switching modes actively when needed. Most of my FSD driving is in Chill mode.
FSD streak is a gamification of driving which is dangerous so I refuse to push my streak. If I tried I probably can go over 1k.
Things I learned: in emergency situation as a human at 65mph I would not be able to react appropriately in time so mentally I am preparing to allow car to take control to the end (I am not sure how I will react in a real situation), when it comes to parking and close situations I keep foot on break all the time, paying attention is extremely important especially on rural narrow roads.
I have zero FSD miles in mad max or Hurry Mode. Despite my trust in FSD I don’t want to bob and weave in traffic mainly due to other drivers and higher likelihood of collision from human drivers.
Biggest issue: driving modes on highways make sense from a behavioral standpoint as far as lane switching but make zero sense when it comes to speed. Examples: chill mode on high way at 55mph speed limit will go at 57. 57 is too slow, after switching to standard ot will go up to 65 or 71 which is too fast on that highway - speeding ticket is guaranteed. On the other hand driving in chill mode on a highway with a speed limit of 65 is perfectly fine for me.
In a past year I probably drove regular car less than 100 miles and every time I had to do it I felt naked. It’s a feeling of missing the sensor bubble around me. I really have to force “head on a swivel” behavior while driving compared to Tesla where I became more casual.
Final note: even with 99.4% I must say FSD is not for everyone. I have seen a lot of stories of elderly drivers embarrassing FSD which is great but in case of my parents I will hesitate, I will have to spend significant time training them. I feel like the majority of people need some sort of training.
For me personally, the Tesla Y is not the best build car or the best-looking car (best value car for what it has to offer) but in order for me to switch to other manufacturers, they will have to develop better FSD which is in my opinion will be very hard. At this point I cannot imagine myself driving again.
