Hi, I’m John. I helped organize Sunnyside Potluck & Jam, and it was one of the highlights of my life. It was everything I thought it could be. Thank you to the community for coming together and enjoying one another through food, music, art, and fun.
I walk around Sunnyside constantly and meet so many amazing, interesting people. It’s so much fun to talk with everyone and be part of such an artistic, creative community. I’m glad I had the opportunity to help introduce you to one another.
Someone called the mix of mahjong lessons, massages, music, mutual aid groups, food, and meeting neighbors genius. Believe me, I’m no genius. I started with the idea of a long table and a potluck. From there, things changed constantly. I just kept walking around Sunnyside, meeting amazing people who liked the idea and kept hopping on board. Everyone brought something of their own, and that’s how it all came together.
I want to thank the small businesses that helped along the way:
- Ora La Casa De Las Flores: Tangni’s flowers were truly magnificent!
- Suryaside Yoga: Roque, Matt, and Tracy paved the way with Humanity Fest!

I also want to say something about volunteering. I didn’t want formal volunteer lists or shifts. My hope was that people would see something that needed doing and just help out. I wanted it to be organic, and it was.
A wonderful couple looked after the food station. My friends and neighbors picked up garbage and changed the bags. We used a mishmash of sound equipment, including Sunnyside Woodside Mutual Aid’s salvaged PA system. We broke down the entire setup in minutes because so many people jumped in.
I trusted my community to look after the space and one another, and you did. It was a total community team effort. It was soulful and an amazing sight.
A huge thank-you to the MVP neighbors and volunteers who saw what needed doing and jumped in. You helped immensely:
- James: the best sound guy in the history of audio. Without him this event is 100% not the same
- Ryan: First Mate and future DEP Chair
- Austin and Dan: Sunnyside Super Couple
- Quinn: my morning stretch and garden buddy
- Jeannie: seed bomb making wonderperson
- Francis: my cousin
- Andrew: sausage and peppers and miniatures master!
I want to thank Juile Won and her office specifically Kalsang for help facilitating the permit, dsny garbage pick-up and helping print additional copies of my flier.
Thank you to William from Woodside on the Move for his advice!
Thank you to Dirk, Evelyn, and Aki from Sunnyside Shines for their advice, support, equipment, and supplies. A special thank-you to Dirk. After the storm forced us to cancel the original date, I don’t think I would have kept going and organized a rain date without his encouragement. He told me how well I was doing and that I shouldn’t give up. That meant a lot to me, and I’m so glad I listened.
And a special thank-you to my close friends, all Sunnyside natives, and my family, who contributed funding alongside me. Especially Jim, Mike, Tom, Pat, Mom, and Camille—your generosity helped make this day possible. I’m so grateful for your support.
Thank you, Sunnyside. I’ll remember this day for the rest of my life.
P.S. Might be doing something for Halloween....Will Keep You Posted!
