I really dislike that i have to launch Rocket League with Epic

I didn't quit Rocket League for a couple of years since it was available on Steam still, but Epic just kept killing every good thing about the game so I finally uninstalled after 6k hours and never looked back. It was like 2-3 years ago I think.

It's almost impressive how bad Epic Games is at...games.

I quit rocket league because I bought a new Mac Studio for music production and then a week later epic killed Mac support because Apple won’t let them break their decades long App Store standards.

Like they could change one line of code pretty much and I could play the game. I’d probably buy the battle pass too. But epic is actually the most horseshit dumb fuck company in the gaming space.

hen a week later epic killed Mac support because Apple won’t let them break their decades long App Store standards.

These standards were found to be illegal, and what Epic did is now standard on mobile games. I was just looking at the pokemon go store for instance, an it openly links to the web store and shows you can pay less for the same stuff when Apple isn't taking 30%.

There are plenty of good reasons to hate Epic, but giving game developers 30% more revenue is sure as shit not one of them.

Steam also takes that same cut. Sure, they successfully argued Apple was too restrictive, but it’s been an extremely standard practice as cost for hosting the infrastructure. Epic trying to bypass the App Store was certainly not to do anything for independent devs lmao, it was their own greed for a full cut of fortnite skins.

Haven't you needed the app store to install apps on iPhones? At least in a normal manner. Maybe there were some shittier ways of doing it before.

If you can install from other places, the "hosting infrastructure" point falls apart. But Apple clearly doesn't want other places. Online it reads like you could do stuff on other stores since 2024 but IIRC they still wanted a cut from those stores. So they want a cut for something that they don't even host.

It only applies to the EU and it reads like this is still the current status https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/08/apple-announces-changes-for-apps-in-the-european-union/ though with less moronic rules but still moronic.

Devs don't NEED Steam to host anything. It is effectively a monopoly due to userbase, but not forcing it. It is disingenuous to compare. Steam also doesn't charge you for hosting your games on Uplay, EA Origin or EGS.

The only defence Apple could have is that it's still on iOS which they have to maintain. If it was oh so hard to maintain the OS, they could offer alternative operating systems and then everything falls apart(But I doubt they'd make alternative OSs allowed to work as expected as they could implement all sorts of issues via the hardware just like they already seem to do for repairs.). Plus their hardware is required for iOS and you fucking buy that(wtf does that pay for besides the OS and the cost of the hardware itself?). Apple can't have anything else besides that they want parasite fees just cause they can.

If anything Valve has more of a defense for the "We maintain the OS", as you can install SteamOS on other hardware. But the OS is also something they started. So it would look like they made the OS so that they can have parasite fees.

it’s been an extremely standard practice as cost for hosting the infrastructure

It's unambiguous that hosting and infrastructure costs are tiny fraction of 30%, even for MUCH smaller stores than Steam. Many single games run their own stores because they can save such an enormous amount of money. 30% came from physical distribution, and was never justified for digital distribution. We've just never had competitive digital markets to bring that down.

Epic trying to bypass the App Store was certainly not to do anything for independent devs lmao, it was their own greed for a full cut of fortnite skins.

Not really, but sorta. Unlike Steam who caters to consumers and screws over devs, Epic is the reverse. Their main customer for most of their history has been devs using Unreal Engine. Now even in Fortnite, they're trying to mostly pay devs to make content inside the game. It's hard to be a profitable business supporting developers when Steam (and Apple) are rent-seeking to such an extraordinary degree.
